  7. MUSKEGON - A half-century after once-plentiful lake trout disappeared from Lake Michigan, the fish appears to be making a comeback. Scientists have discovered evidence that lake trout are reproducing on their own on a deepwater reef in the middle of the lake. The finding is significant because the fish has not reproduced on its own in Lake Michigan since the 1950s, when sea lamprey exterminated the species. "This is like finding a needle in a haystack," Jim Dexter, Lake Michigan basin coordinator for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, told the Muskegon Chronicle for a story last week. "This is definitely good news, but does it mean we're on the road to rehabilitating the lake trout population? No." Lake trout are far from being out of danger in Lake Michigan. Scientists who discovered lake trout eggs hatching on a reef 30 miles offshore from Grand Haven found no evidence that the fish were living long enough to become juveniles or mature fish. Until lake trout can reproduce on their own and reach maturity, the species will not be considered on the road to recovery, Dexter said. That has not happened in 50 years, since sea lamprey killed the last of the lake trout. Lamprey entered the Great Lakes decades earlier through the Welland Canal, which links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The elimination of lake trout allowed alewife, another invasive species, to proliferate and take over Lake Michigan. By the early 1960s, alewives accounted for 90% of the entire mass of living organisms in Lake Michigan, and huge piles of the dead, stinky fish often rendered beaches unfit for human use. The DNR began stocking salmon in Lake Michigan in 1966 to reduce the number of alewives and create a new fishery to replace lake trout. Government agencies have continued to stock lake trout in Lake Michigan for the past 40 years, planting about 2 million last year alone. But unlike salmon, which reproduce naturally in rivers that flow into Lake Michigan, lake trout have failed to recover. By 2035, government fish biologists want 75% of all lake trout under 10 years old in Lake Michigan to be the result of natural reproduction

  9. BARRY COUNTY - State police believe a fisherman missing in Barry County since Wednesday afternoon has drowned. Police and other search crews were dispatched to the Gun Lake State park in Yankee Springs Township. The 22year old man from Delton had been on the water since 3:00 p.m. Wednesday and was supposed to return to shore at 5:15. Crews were able to find a canoe and personal belongings but they haven't found the fisherman. The search was postponed because of darkness and high winds. It resumes this morning.

  12. I used to drive by this old bar called DV8. I don't think anybody could make this place work which was ironic for a place where the name means to make or create a change in something. I adopted the dv8 and use it still in my email address dv8_usa. I like to think I single handedly can create change in the great US. Dv8oR a creator of change seemed like a cool screen name that wasnt' being used.....lol..... Pronounced Deviator! T

  18. Welp! Its another fine year to the deer hunting season about to come to a close. If you've been hunting this late season with your bow, you sure have had great weather for it! I myself stopped at my one deer cuz I literally, have no place to put another if I were to kill it. I did hunt a couple more times and just figured I'd worry about that after the fact (providing it was a 150 or better!) (better chance of winning the lottery....heheheheh). SO! Here's to the 2006 Deer Hunting Season! and if I don't write about something before, Here's to 2007 and all of ya!!!!! Hell Yea!!!!! T
