  1. couple of things to keep in mind when using a cooker of that type.

If your cooking outside keep the wind in mind. the windier it is the harder it is to keep the temp consistant. Also check your flame. It should be blue. if it is not then you need to adjust your regualtor. blue is hotter and as it heats up the end of the flames will turn yellow orange color. the other is the amount of oil vs the size of your cooking pot. I do alot of turkeys and your just want to cover the bird. In the case of fish you dont want to put to much fish in at one time. This will cause the oil to cool down to fast and not get hot enought quick enough to get your fish crispy. it usually turns out mushy. If you check these and still have isuues then I might suspect your cooker has a problem.

One other thing is the type of oil. For fish I use Canola. for turkeys I use penut oil. Reason being Is I dont like the taste of the penut oil for fish and it tends to overcook the fish because it holds a hoter temp then canola. in other words it takes less falme to heat penut oil then canola. but the canola taste better. so if your using canola or vegtable oil you will definently have to turn up the flame to get it hot and stay hot.

    Good luck.

  2. for what it is worth I have a place up near the Pere Marquett river in lake county and I have personally seen salmon showing up for about two weeks now. No big schools but seeing big males here and there moving up getting ready to do there business.

  3. Would it work... ???

I am sure someone has tried it....

Running a SD with a spoon in back?

    Maybe J plugs?

    Meat rigs....

Does the artificial "meat" work that you dip in herring oil?

Sorry for the silly questions just had it on my mind since I could not fish this morning.

    Hi Dave\

If you look at the back of a Luhr Jenson doger package it acutually showes the doger with a spoon or a j plug behind it. So yes either should work. Very popular west coast set up.

  4. I feel your pain brother. Southaven is a nitemare when it comes to there public facilities and they could care less about your trouble They are there to make MONEY. Been that way for atleast as long as i can remember and that is approximatly the last 12 years that I have been using that launch and most of my life visiting the town. Its a great little town to visit but dont care for there public politics.

    thanks for the heads up.

  5. i found in my smoking that if i keep the heat to around 180 durining the first hour to 2 hours that the fish has a better smoke taste to it.

I'll have to try that brine always on the look out for a new taste.

The brine i make up is: And not trying to hijack your post:

    1 gallon water

2 cups morton tender quick salt

1 small box of dark brown sugar

    1 bottle treoki sause

    1/4 bottle liguid smoke

    1/4 cup of capt morgan

let soak for 24 to 36 hours and smoke

dont feel bad i butchered that word to. AS FAR AS SMOKE TEMP I THINK IT DEPENDS ON THE SMOKER. MY OLD SMOKER I WOULD NOT HAVE DARED THAT HIGH OF TEMP. MY NEW ONE SEEMS TO BE PERFECT WITH THAT TEMP.

  6. treoki???? Or teriyaki? Just want to make sure im not missing out on something new, sounds good

teriyaki. Thanks for pointing out that i had no idea how to spell that. I might have had a chance if that were an actual english word. But only a chance.

  7. 110 down over the deep water on big paddles. :)

right on the money. the only other thing I could add is blue bubble. Back in the 80's it was the blue Michigan sparkle fly and it was deadly. behind a crome o doger.8' to 10' behind the ball. # 5 green J plug is also very productive.

  8. Had a football scrimiage lastnight down south and east over twords Battle creek and got my first look at the Oil spill. Man its worse then i thought it would be. Already reports of dead water foul and one report thismorning of 10 dead geese found covered in oil. this may be worse then people think before its all said and done. Reports said there is 43 thousand feet of boom trying to contain it but with the higher water leveles we have had this year the oil is making its way around the booms. Jenny as i call her. (Gov Granholm). has officially declaired this a state of emergency.

Any one else had any visiual of this yet. I only got to see a small portion of this east of battle creek and they are anticipating the spill hitting maybe as far as plainwell today. :(

  9. I run my plugs bare and theyre usually best for me out on the boards, but i do take fish on them on the dipseys and riggers as well.

You can run them bare or behind a doger and also either way behind the dipsey. all have caught me fish in the past. I belive that Luhr Jensen shows a diagram of all setups mentioned on the back of there dogers and the back of there J plugs. I have this diagram somewhere in my boat. I will see if I can find it and take a pic and post it to share.

  10. The problem with being number one is that everyone is eyeing you. I use to think Bill and Dave were kind of stuffy but once you get to know them and they see you around the fishing industry and get to know your face there just like any other fishermen, and will atleast say hello. I think they are a class act. Now as someone on this site says,? ( shut up and fish).

  11. Made a trip of luddington with my wife and Kids and the kids friend Jacob yesterday.

After a very late start hitting the water ( 1pm to be exact) ended up 6 for 11 five kings and 1 steelhead. Pulled lines about 5pm as this is typically there schedule. Odd hours for me. fished North starting at the pump house and working towards the point.

started at 120' and worked out. Hit our first fish in 170'. ended up staying in the 170 to 190 depth between the pumphouse and point.

    Good setups were

    full core # 5 J plug. AKA (Green Weenie) 1 Steelhead 1King

silver streak dolphin on the rigger 88 down and 50' back 2 kings

300 copper yellowtail streak 1 king

wire dipsey 160 back blue spindoctor with get ya some yogurt fly 1 king.

good speed was 2.8 to 3.0.

Kings were around 5 to 6lb with 1 being 14 lb and a 13lb steelie.

water temp was 65 degrees on the surface and 45 degrees 90 down.

Unfortantly at the end of the trip at the dock the boat stalled and now wont start. going to have to haul here back home to work on it.

We had a really heavy rain on sunday and I belive I have water in the gas. and I belive my starter after some deliberation is about shot. So unfortantly this will be our only trip on the big boat this week.

I did haul the other boat up so I will have to spend my free time puddle jumping for bass. Could be worse I guess.
