  1. Fished Port Sheldon this morning from about 5:30 until about 10. We ended up going 2 for 8 catching an 11lbs king and a 5lbs king. blue veggie on rigger down 55ft 1 for 2 (11lb king) glow watermelon spoon fixed slider 10ft above ball down 60 ft 0 for 1 dipsey 200 back on 3 crushed glow spin doctor and a glow fly dont remember the name 1 for 1 (5lb king) mag dipsey 125 back on 1 with green splatter back silver horde j-plug 0 for 2 mag dipsey 110 back on 1 with coyote spoon 0 for 1 broken leader dipsey 250 back on 3 white e-chip flasher and mirage fly 0 for 1 All hits came between 90 and 105 fow with the majority coming on a west to southwest troll. Up until today have never really had a problem with losing fish on the dipseys but most fish were usually on long enough to grab the rod out of the rod holder and then they were gone. I guess it was just one of those day.
  2. We fished that same depth of water last night just south of Port Sheldon. Did you guys see many marks on the graph or were they still few and far between?
  3. Finally got out on the water tonight. Set up in 60 fow on a west troll at about 5. Took the first hit in 94 fow on a full core with a mixed veggies. The first fish of the year was a shaker that hit while the line was being let out. Second hit came on a rigger set 75 down with a lemon ice spoon in 150 fow again on a west troll. That fish was 7.5 lb king. Last hit of the night came in 175 fow on a east troll on a rigger 75 down with lemon ice spoon. That fish was a 12.5 lb king that caused a lot of havoc right at dark. It ended up tangling up the 200 and 300 foot copper setups. So we will have to see how much of the copper we will be able to save or if it is just going to be easier to buy some new copper. Really not much chatter on the radio and never really marked a lot of fish. Ended up with some sea fleas on the braided dipseys.
  4. Fished Port Sheldon this morning from 6:30 to 10:30 and went 6 for 7. Set up in 70 foot of water. While setting the second rigger the first rigger fires 55 down with a crushed glow green back silverhorde. First fish of the day in the box and the first 20 pounder on my boat. Second hit came on the same setup 55 down was on for a minute then came unbuttoned. Third hit came on a rigger 60 down with a crushed glow blue back silverhorde landed 13.5lb king. First three hits came in between 70 and 85 foot of water in the first hour. Fourth hit came in 105 foot of water on a full core with a wonder bread j plug 11lb king. Fifth hit came on power pro dipsey set on 2 175 back in 115 with a crushed glow spin doctor and a mirage fly 15.5lb king. Sixth hit came on a power pro dipsey set on 2 125 back in 120 with a killer blue spin doctor and a blue fly dont remember the name of the fly anymore. Another 15lb king. Last hit came in 150 foot of water on a rigger 65 down with a blue dolphin spin doctor and a blue fly 8.5lb king. All in all an awesome day on the water with the first 2 hrs being spectacular going 5 for 6 in that time.
  5. Thanks to all the guys who post on this site. This is only my third year of salmon fishing on the big lake and went into it without any knowledge. I have learned so much about it from reading things on this site. Now we are catching fish on a pretty consistent basis.
  6. Sorry for the late report but I fished Port Sheldon last night. We ended up 4 for 6. With a 4lb lake trout, 6 lb steelhead, 9lb king, and a 13lb king. Our hottest settup was a crushed glow blue back silverhorde j plug down 75 on the rigger that took 3 hits. The other hits came on lemon ice fixed slider 10ft above the ball with the rigger down 75 that took one hit. Lemon ice on a seven color with a 4oz dive bomb took the laker. Then our other hit came on 200ft copper with a green splatter back silver horde j plug. All hits came between 135 and 160 foot of water.
  7. Hey Jim were you guys roughly straight out from the stacks. We started in about 130 foot and had a boat to our north until we got to about 180 foot of water and then they packed up and headed out deeper. We were in a 22.5 foot bayliner.
  8. Sorry for the late report. We went 5 for 8 out of Port Sheldon this morning. We had 5 hits on a 5 color with double orange crush. Of the 5 we landed 2coho about 2lbs each. The other three hits came on 300 foot of 45lb copper. I dont know the name of the stinger spoon but it was blue on top and yellow on the bottom with an orange ladder in the middle. That took a 10lb king, 7lb king, and a 4 lb king. All hits came from 185 to 205 feet of water straight out from the stacks. 3 hits came on sw troll, 1 on a s troll, and 4 on a east troll.
  9. Gander Mountain puts on a weekly league at Wabasis lake in Kent county. They have a point system based on where you place and the number of boats and crown a point champion for the year. Then if you earn a certain number of points throughout the year you get to fish the classic at the end of the year. If you show up every week you are about guaranteed to fish the classic at the end of the year. The payout changes from week to week depending on the number of boats but they also pay for biggest bass, and second biggest bass. If you go into the Grandville store before bass season opens they will have the dates posted and rule sheets.
  10. Fished Grand Haven last night and went 1-7 had one up to the boat on a dipsey and it broke the leader on the rigger cable. Had another one all the way to the boat and it came unbuttoned just out of the reach of the net. Fished all the way out to 160 with 85-110 being the best the last hour before dark. 130 fow fireline dipsey on 1 140 back mixed veggie spoon (missed) 110 fow rigger 85 down bloody nose j-plug (3lb coho) 105 fow rigger 75 down fixed slider 10 feet above ball with lemon ice spoon took a hit on the slider (missed) 103 fow fireline dipsey on 1 160 back silver horde green black ladder back j-plug (missed) 90 fow fireline dipsey on 1 140 back silver horde double glow j-plug (missed) 90 fow fireline dipsey on 1 160 back silver horde green black ladder back j-plug (missed) 88 fow rigger 75 down fixed slider 10 feet above ball with lemon ice spoon took a hit fish ended up braking the split ring on the top of the spoon. The last three hits were part of a triple with only two people on board. We ended up getting two of the three to the the boat before they broke us off on the rigger cable or came unbuttoned.
  11. When we had the doubles on one of us would just hold one of the rods with one hand trying to keep some pressure on the fish and steer the boat with the other hand. We ended up only landing one fish each time we had a double on. One came off after peeling out about 75 feet on the line counter making a couple runs. The other ended up wrapping around the other dipsey on that side of the boat once and then came unbuttoned. Probably should have done a little more figthing of the fish rather than trying to keep the boat perfectly straight.
  12. Fished Grand Haven last night from 6-9:30 and went 7 for 10. All our hits were from 94-120 foot of water. With 8 of them from 110-120 foot of water. Our hits went like this. Fireline dipsey 100 back on 1 with glow splatter back j-plug took 2 hits. Fireline dipsey 175 back on 3 with blue bubble spin doctor and no see um mirage fly took 2 hits. Fireline dipsey 200 back on 3 with green crush glow spin doctor with a green fly took 2 hits. Downrigger 85 down with blue veggies spoon took 1 hit. Downrigger 67 down with lemon ice spoon took 3 hits. We ended up with 6 kings and 1 lake trout. All in all a fun night on the water with a double two different times with only two people in the boat.
  13. Fished Grand Haven last night from 6-10 pm. Set up in 80 and trolled out took our first hit in 105 on a rigger 45 down with a lemon ice spoon. After a short battle that one came unbuttoned. Trolled out to 130 without a bump so turned in. Our next hit came in 105 on a dipsey set on 3 200 back with a blue holo crush glow spin doctor and mirage no see um fly (4lb king). The next hit came on a rigger 80 down in 105 feet with a mixed veggie (8lb king). Next the blue holo crush glow spin doctor and mirage no see um fly on the dipsey back 200 on 3 went again (5lb king). While resetting that dipsey the dipsey on the other side with green crush glow e-chip flasher and last supper fly set on 3 back 225 took a rip after a couple minute fight that one came unbuttoned. Our last fish came on a rigger 48 down with a mixed veggie spoon in 80 feet (5lb laker). We ended the night 4 for 6 all our fish came south of the pierheads on a north and south troll.
  14. At least somebody caught some fish today. We fished Grand Haven and ended up with the big skunk. Fished from 80-200 with out a release. All the boats out there were really scattered.
  15. Set lines at 7:45 in 120 and headed west. Took our first fish in 135ft on a dipsy with blue crushed/glow pro troll flasher and blue bubble fly set on 3 200 back 5lb king. Trolled out to 150 and turned back in our only other hit came on a dispsy set on 3 150 back with a green crushed glow pro troll flasher and green fly in 115 ft of water. We lost this one because the leader broke. Pulled lines at about 10 ending the night 1 for 2.
  16. Sorry for the late report. Set lines in 60 ft of water and headed west. Didn't take our first fish until 115 ft when the 7 color goes with Craigs X-mas landed a 4lb king. Turned around and headed east and in 90 ft rigger 50 down with stinger dolphin pops landed 5lb lake trout. Trolled back out to 130 with not another bump so turned back in. Got to 120ft rigger 100 down with blue circus freak pops and nobody there. Minutes later the other rigger down 85 with stinger dolphin pops landed a 5lb king to end the day 3-4. I was wondering what is the best way to keep the sea fleas of the line. I thought we were going to lose a couple fish due to cleaning the line with a fish on. We would pull in lines about every half hour to clean the fleas of because they were that bad. Just looking for some suggestions.
  17. Fished Grand Haven from 7:30-11:30 in 170-230 feet of water. Our first fish a 5lb Lake Trout on a half core with an orange chips shanster spoon. Our second fish was a shaker on a seven color with a NBK spoon. Our third fish was a 4lb King on a dipsey set on 3 250 back with NBK green chrome spin doctor and a green fly. Our last fish was a shaker on a rigger 75 down on a mixed veggie spoon. All our fish came between 180-190.
  18. Vexilar all the way. With the vexilar you are viewing the entire water column under the hole. Where as with the camera you can only see what is in front of the camera. The cameras also don't work very well in murky water. I have played around with both of them and own both of them but the camera hardly ever gets used anymore now that I have the vexilar.
  19. I use the cabelas brand of lead core. Last year was the first time I ran lead core and had no problems. I think every time I had a core rod in the water we had a hit on it. I ran full core rods and half core rods. This year I think might change the full cores to seven color or something like that and use what I take of to make up a couple 2 or 3 color rods.
  20. Fished Grand Haven this morning and went 3 for 5. First hit came on a blue crush glow spindoctor with a blue bubble fly on a dipsey set on 3 75ft back in 65 fow. That fish was on for a few seconds then it was gone. Second hit came on a rigger 61 down in 65 fow on a mother of pearl J-plug and that was on then gone. Third hit came on a rigger down 50 in 65 fow on a mixed veggie spoon landed an 8lb king. Fourth hit came on a rigger 61 down in 65 fow on a mother of pearl J-plug landed a 5lb king. Last hit came on blue crush spin doctor with blue bubble fly on a dipsey set on 3 150ft back in 79 fow landed a 3lb king. All hits came south of the piers with 4 of the 5 hits on a north troll the other hit came on a west troll.
  21. Fished Grand Haven this morning and went 3 for 3. We set lines just outside the pierheads and didn't take our first fish until we hit 80 ftw. That fish came on a bloody nose j-plug 52 down on a rigger. Our second fish came at around 100 ftw on a dipsey 175 back set on 3 with a blue chrome spindoctor and blue bubble fly. Our last fish came at about 110 ftw on a bloody nose j-plug 52 down on a rigger. We marked a lot of fish in 80-100 ftw. All fish were kings with the biggest being about 10lbs and the smallest about 5lbs.
  22. Fished Grand Haven this morning and went 2-3. First fish came in 40 foot of water 30 down on a rigger on a wonderbread J plug. That was a 6lb king. When we netted the fish the chain on the hooks broke and we ended up losing the plug and couldn't find it back. The only one of that color we had go figure. Second hit came on a dipsey set on 3 90 back blue crush glow spindoctor and a blue fly. Lost that one after a couple minute fight it broke the leader between the dipsey and spindoctor. Third hit came on blue chrome spin doctor and blue fly on a dipsey set on 3 90 back. That was an 8lb king. All hits came between 40-50 feet. The pack of boats mostly stayed South of the pierheads and we were one of the few that stayed to the North.
  23. It looked like a parking lot out of Grand Haven this morning we ended up 0 for 2 on half cores with a 4 oz dive bomband a stinger NBK spoon. It looks like we should have probably continued on to Port Sheldon.
