  1. I switched to the Scottys and those puppies are awesome. Dropping the balls down deep and no false releases, I use 7' ugly sticks and can really load them up with the scottys. I use 12# balls on the inside riggers and pancakes with the fins tuned on the outside.

thats one of the reasons i like the pancake weights so well. you can bend the fins just alittle and open up your spread. dont worry as much about tangles. and those fins are not easy to bend, you dont have to worry about them just getting bent on there own. but you do want to make sure to put the ones bent to run to the right on the right side and the same on the left, or they will run under your boat,LOL.

and i have yet to hear anybody thats used the chamberlain release to say anything bad about them. i do alot of walleye fishing on the central basin of erie. we get ALOT of small fish, white bass, yellow and white perch. now instead of bringing the riggers in all the time to check for small fish, they usely trip. i even used the rubberbands for releases and these fish were so small you couldnt see them shake the rods. but with the chamberlains they just trip and your not draging small fish around untill you bring them in and check them. we will still check them after about an hour or 2 if nothing trips them just to be on the safe side. but most of the time the small fish will trip them. and we have the rods losded up tight enough that we still get good hooksets. i would never use anything elce since i have tried them.

does anyone thats used the chamberlains have anything bad to say about them?? would really like to know if you have had any problems with them. i,ve been wondering how they work with big dodgers and stuff like that??

    ....thanks sherman....

  2. Chamberlain releases are the only way to go. Completely adjustable for any situation. Both vertical and horizontal settings for the rod tension and the release tension back to the fish. Love em !

    hey dude

i just got my stackers yesterday. i have been thinking about just using the stacker about 1 ft above my weight and use them that way for my main release. as you can put them anywhere you want on your rigger cable. can you think of any reason this wouldnt work??

  3. if you,ll start watching big jon downriggers on ebay, they start selling pretty good right about now. i got 2 brand new big jon pro tournaments last year about this time for 525.00 for the pair. or you can contact tony at [email protected] for his best prices. and sonetimes he will have a good set of used big jons at a great price. but big jon makes a solid rigger at a good price. and i used manuals forever and went to electric 2 years ago. and i kicked my butt for not switching alot sooner. you,ll be much happier with electrics. but get some that works to start with. dont start with some thats already worn out. you can get good used ones and still not spend that much. but good luck whatever you do.

  4. everybody has there own choices. i love my pancake weights. i use the 13 lb weights myself. they work great in shallow water and get very little blowback when i go deeper.

another great release is the chamberlain, it is based on the blacks release but it has 2 adjustments. 1 for rod tension and 1 for lure tension. you can set the rod tension tight enough to really crank your rod down, then adjust the lure tension light enough that the shakers will trip the release. they also make a great stacker. you can check them both out at downriggerrelease.com then just watch the video,s. they are alittle pricey but worth every penny when your getting small fish. you can contact keith and get alittle better price. or you can get them for around 15.00 each at midwesthuntersoutlet.com, hope this helps.

  5. James a warm welcome to the GLF site. That project looks like an 8 player poker table to me. I don't mean a Holdem Table real poker. You do very nice work.

    :welcome:

i was about to say something like that. if i could do work like that, i know what i would be doing on these cold winter days. great work.

  6. great thread guys, there is nothing like watching a new person catch a wild fish. you truly are someone to aspire to. i dont do any pier fishing, but do alot of walleye fishing on the central basin of erie. i have the pleasure of taking my sons and one daughter n law and 2 blood grandsons and one young boy we have chosen to be our grandson. when he was a baby we took him and his mom in for awhile. they had no place to go. she was my youngest sons ex girlfriends sister, and we just couldnt turn them away. he had alot of respertory problems, and we just got so attached to him, we call him ours.

but anyway they are all fairly new to big water fishing. and there great about waiting there turn on the walleye. but anytime we hook into a nice steely somebody new gets the rod. i never reel in a steelhead anymore. i would much rather see my youngest son or daughter n law or one of the grandkids fight those fish. i have caught hundreds of salmon fishing over the years on the big water and fishing manistee lake for many years. and have caught many steelhead. so now i have my fun just watching the faces of those young people catching those wild high flying fish.

and by the way that young grandson of ours and his mother now lives with his dad. but thats all another story.

  7. we tried 8# one year in the spring, it was great on the coho, but when we got a king on, even a spring king. it was a real kicker, we had to clear the riggers and it took forever to get them in the boat. the next trip we were back to 17#. it just took up to much fishing time getting a king in the boat. good luck with the light line.

  8. its never changed for me, when that rod moves im on my way, and i,ve been doing it since 1977,LOL. i do give others a chance if there closer to the rod than i am. i start yelling which rod as im on my way. if they dont grt it before i get there then i,ll get the rod and hand it off to whoevers turn it happens to be. i have been known to run over a few people getting to the rod. they were just moving alittle to slow,LOL.

  9. im really going to miss him, i really hate to hear he,s gone. i enjoyed talking with him. he believed in his product, and i do to. i love the slide divers better than any of the others.

my heart felt sympathy goes out to his family and his friends.

  10. it seems most all you guys agree with me on this. you cant get away from having some blood if you take pictures. but you shouldnt ban kids from being on the forum just because of alittle blood. and yes some people in this world do go to the extream. and im not talking about this forum. all the pictures i have viewed on here were a real class act. but the thread on the other forum started off with close up shots of the hole in a squirrel with the brains hanging out. and the pictures were sensored. but there was a good shot of the squirrel with blood on the side of its head that was left. which i thought told the story just fine. but then there was some coments about banning kids instead of sensoring the pictures. and i just wanted some of your thoughts. and you guys never let me down.

  11. ok guys and gals, im going to tell on myself. im on this other forum. there was a post about bloody pictures. and some people thought everyone under the age of 18 should be banned from the site, so there wouldnt be a problem posting gory pictures. i myself just see no reason to post bloody gory pictures of our kill or catch. i dont mean there should be no blood. or you couldnt post anythig. but it can be done with alittle class.

i for 1 think these forums are a great place for our young to hang out. i think they have the chance to learn ethics, that they might not be able to get anywhere elce. i think its a great place for them to learn about the sport of fishing and hunting.

i would much rather our posts be censored and have my kids and grandkids be hanging out on here than down on the corner doing god knows what.

i think we as sportsmen should be honered to mentor to our young. and i always try to do that even out here in the real world.

now what do you think about our younger generation being on this forum?? and do you believe bloody gory pictures are needed to impress others with your hunt or the fish you,ve caught??

  12. i drive a old motorhome around alot. and dont know what it is, but everybody has to get in front of me. even if i have to slam on the brakes to keep from running over them. i guess they think im going to slow them dowm. when in fack most of the time they slow me down,LOL. i usely end up having to pass them. and with a motorhome you have to have a good passing zone. just venting alittle about the guy that thinks mh,s cant run 55,LOL.

  13. Thank you Sherman. I was looking at the Daiwa as well but the convector may just be more budget friendly. I am starting from scratch so if I can save a little here and there it will help. I am going to the sport fishing show next weekend and may find a good deal or two. I did find the convector for $62 online and I thought that was a pretty good price. Who knows, I was set on the magda line and then justified spending a little more. Who knows, if I keep justifying I'll end up with Clarions.

you,ll be happy with the convectors. there much better than the magda,s. i spent about 6 months watching ebay to get all the sealines i bought. and i lost a few auctions. you really have to invest alot of time to get enough of the sealines at a good enough price to save enough money to make it worth while to buy them.

  14. I am new to this site and trolling. I have noticed that a lot of people are satisfied with convector reels. Would model cv-30d be sufficient? I am just going to start with two DR rods and two dipsey rods. They will most likely be paired with medium action Shomano TDR's. I am going to try and use them for walleye and salmon trolling.

another good reel is the daiwa sealine sg27lca , if you can find these on ebay for around 60.00 each for a real good used one or even new one. i have bought 12 of the sg17lca reels for 45.00 to 65.00 then put the power handles on them you have a great reel. and most of the ones i got were brand new or looked and worked like new. i like them much better than the convectors.

but to answer your question yes the 30 size convectors should work just fine for what you want them for. i bought some of the 20 size to use for walleyes on erie and they are great reels for the price. and they really should be big enough for what you listed you wanted them for. just my opinion.

  15. i have to agree. to much bottle. i have never used the tekota,s but i have always heard good things about them. but just to much money for me. my favorite reel for the money has to be the daiwa sg lca reels. i,ve bought a bunch of them off ebay from 45.00 to 65.00 for them and most of them were brand new.

i use the sg17lca but the bigger reels for copper and wire would work just fine. i have the convector 20 line counter reels and some of the daiwa accudepth plus adp17lc and they really arent bad reels for the price. but with the power handles on the sg17lca reels they are in a much higher class than the convectors or the accudepth plus reels. and when i can pick up the daiwa sg lca reels for the same or less money than the convectors then im going to go with the daiwa,s.

the only reel i got off ebay that didnt work right i contacted the seller and he paid to ship it to tuna toms and have it repaired, and i didnt even have to file a dispute with ebay to get it done. but on ebay if you get something thats not as described you can file a dispute, and get your money back.

i bought all new power handles for my sg17lca,s and the adp17lc,s from tuna toms. just makes them a whole new reel.

  17. well if i can survive the month of jan i should be ok. right now my favorite niece is planning on moving to tenn from fl. so she will be in tenn the 11th of jan. so my wife and myself have our eyes tested on the 9th, then on the 10th we will go to tenn for about a week. then we will come back home. then about the first of feb we,ll start to fl, then we,ll stop in tenn again for about a week, then on to fl, we have some close friends in jacksonville, so we,ll star for a few days, then on to ft pierce. we plan to stay with my older sister. and then my other sister and her husband has a 19 ft boat. so around the end of the first week of feb i should be doing my ice fishing from his boat,LOL. then by the time i get back after the 1st of march it will be time to hit the maumee river for eyes. then its time to really start fishing. so i will have just survived another winter. everybody just have a great year.

  18. i dont think it will work near as good as the floro leader material. i was using the floro fishing line for leaders, and switched to the seaguar leader material, and it really seemed like my hits picked up. im not 100% sure or if it was just a percieved increase. but i havent looked back. but then i dont really go through that many leaders except just the start of the season, then i just replace them as needed. and for the few extra bucks, if im happy then its worth it. i mean with all the hundreds of $$ spent on gas and lures if it does help just alittle or even if it just makes me think its working better then its a few $$ well spent. no??
