  1. In early season the southern end of the Lake (St Joe) So.Haven usually have a good amount of Coho but the best is the Browns. Run Flat lines with body baits or clean small SS spoons in silver red or silver blue combos run the boards in close to the beach while keeping your boat just over the second sand bar off the beach the browns are up there chasing minnows. If you want Coho run a couple of 000 dodgers in red or orange with coho candy flies down fm 5 to 10 ft over 12 to 20 FOW. Slow and try spreading your long lines out farther using Hot n Tots or my fav is the old Tad Polly in copper red herring bone sides it kills both Coho and browns. For up around GH the Browns are there and they can be caught really shallow just like the lower part of the lake.

    Good luck and Happy fishing

  2. I second the Silver Horde or Ace Hi over the Luhr Jensen J Plug, the action is better and over the years they have outproduced the J Plug for me. You have to watch but Gander Mtn runs specials on them and D&R Sports in Kalamazoo has run some promos on them in the past they are always competitive. You might also look on e-bay for a deal.

  3. The spring pattern is usually bright red or orange 000 dodgers with small crinkle body flies in green silver, green gold. red gold and red silver they are Coho Candy.

I still like to run some Black Squids by LJ behind hammered silver Dodgers or Trash Can dodgers. They always seem to catch some Kings. Biggest drawback to dodgers is speed (slow) and short leads off the ball. Spinnies run well even on long lines as do Bechold Flashers. Mix it up and experiment until u find a pattern that u like. I have about 250 flies in assorted colors and body make up including deer hair and any other material I can tie a douple hook harnes to. I really love the new Flash and Opti type fly material really interesting to see them in the water. This last season we did well on all colors of the 11" Opti Flashers and flies with longer leads behind them usually from chest to floor about 40".

  4. I second the "braid and riggers don't work" I tried it in July a few years ago and was inundated with sea fleas, and when we did get strikes the no stretch issue really came into play. If u dont want to run leadcore, try some 30# copper its sinks faster than leadcore and u can get 300' of 30# copper on the CV45. I run CV55's and use 45# copper it is a fish catching presentation with either plugs or spoons.

  5. Well I guess I gotta go with the Speed Temp Probe, Yankee Troller said if u got 2 on the boat take turns driving, I have run both manual and electric riggers, (love the electrics) but if you want to catch more fish find out where they live and especially where the kitchen is ie. (the right temperature to trigger the feeding cycle) get a good probe and use it. I have fished out of South Haven for a long time and am moving to St Joseph next spring, if you get down there give the MC2 a call on 68. or just call my cell 269 929 4221.

  6. It generally depends on what water you are fishing and if you are going to fish from the bank or in a boat. The majority of the Kings caught in the rivers are by bank fishermen that target fish on the beds and cast to them and let the line run into thier mouths then hook the fish on the outside of the mouth in the corner of the mouth. The bonus is to go Steelheading and u can troll for them with Hot n Tots or other body baits, using standard spring gear and inline boards to cover water. Troll upstream dead slow and cover the holes. 8 to 10 foot rods 15 to 20# line and let her rip. Other methods are bobber fishing with spawn, drifting spawn on cross current casts and the standard drop back method. Best rigs are just any small 18' or smaller outboard powered fishing boat with appropriate rod holders.

  7. My buddy Roland Eckhart on the Bald Eagle got a couple and they are huge. They are made to be either right or left hand boards depending on how you install the weight and clip. I really believe they are a good answer to the problems smaller boards create when running 450 to 600 ft of copper line. As to letting them slide or not, I always set them so they dont slide then get the board off quickly by pointing the rod at the board not lifting it up until you pick the board off of the water. Then you remove the board and fight your fish. If you let a big board like that slide you are asking for a lot of trouble.

I always tighten down the drag to get the board to the back of the boat, remove the board and re set the drag so the fish doesnt pull of or break off the leader.

They are kinda pricey, Roland said he had to pay around 49 bucks apiece for them.

  8. Ok I got up at 4:00 am and checked the Marine forecast, didn't look at the date but saw SE to 15 knots and 1 to 3 on the waves so went over to the boat and waited for my crew to show up. The finally arrived @ 6:30 and I had bad news for them the wind was NW @ 20knots + and the lake was 3 to 5'. Everyone said lets go so we set lines in the basin and trolled out to 98 FOW. Waves were in excess of 6 ft there and I had 2 chummers on board, so we turned to go back in and another 1 got sick. Pulled lines with out a release or a tug. The MC2 got the skunkeroo. The 1 good thing is the water is starting to turn over only 64 degrees on the surface outside the channel, and was 66 in the channel. I only saw 2 other boats out on the lake and they followed me out a ways then never saw them again.
