  1. Mike,

We were out south of P.S. . .

Fishing has slowed down. . . We could not get a dipsey to fire:

We went 4/4 between 7 & 9:30 p.m. This was after trolling around for 1.5 hours looking for fish. . . they are scattered, but mostly deep. We took 2 on 300' copper & Orange Flounder Moonshine - Steelhead in 175 FOW and 14# King in 115 FOW. And, 2 on the rigger & Blue Flounder Moonshine - 83 down; Shaker & Small Kings - 165 FOW & 100 FOW respectively.

Temp break was 80' down past 150 FOW, per a report on the radio. Hopefully things change for next weekend.

Not sure why you would have any bad feelings about the league. The league has been around for a few years now and it has always been a blast. Jim stepped up to make sure everyone still had a chance to fish it in Rich's absents. Give Jim a chance, like he said there is a captian's meeting at the weigh in to iron things out.

I agree with Steve. . . Caz has put a lot of work into this league and perhaps to his detriment. He has always networked with many people before making decisions. Mostly via cell and PM's. Jim is stepping in and trying to be open to the majorities desires. I have camped @ Fisherman's Landing, but quite frankly enjoyed Snug Harbor more. I submitted to the leagues choice, as I will after the Captain's Meeting Sunday(~:

P.S. Steve, got your PM. Thanks.

  3. Spent the evening on the water with Tom (tgafish), my buddy Bo, & a young man (Andrew) from church. We set lines in 45 FOW SW of the pier @ ~6 p.m. The waves were a good 3 feet and building to 4. Our 1st 2 hours were spent finding a good troll, fighting changing wave direction and working out to 75 FOW. . . no fish. As the waves started laying down, we took 3 fish in the next 45 minutes - small Laker & 2 Kings. We then hit another another lull and then the fun began. We pulled the full copper earlier, on which we found the Laker, and set up a glow program 40 to 50 feet down. In the next hour, we went 5/6, ending the night on a double.

Fish came on a variety of set-ups, but mostly a rigger & wire dipsey night, and 80 FOW was the key depth:

Michael Jackson Flasher & a Glow Mirage Fly, wire out 147' on Mag dispey - 2 fish

Rigger down 57 feet & Blue Glow Frog Spoon

5 color core & Gray Ghost Plug

Rigger down 37 & Moonshine Blue Flounder - 2 fish

3 color core w/ 2 oz. drop weight & NBK - lost a high jumping Steelie

300 foot Copper & NBK - the Laker we were dragging around

Unknown flasher/White Fly, wire out ~100' on dispey (Tom's side)

It was great having fish on 4 lines after deciding to pull lines in 30 minutes. The kings ranged from 5 - 14 lbs, all nicely colored.

Thanks for the great night on the water guys and we sent Andrew out east to college with a memorable night. He was a perfect 4/4 in landing his kings.

  4. Those numbers are still good. However, they are not the first set of nets. They are 2 nets between these and the piers. These 2 nets run approx 110-130FOW. I do not have the numbers for these nets with me.

There are lots of nets to the South. They range from 60-130FOW. If you head South, make sure your driver keeps their eyes open.

    Thanks Mike(~:

It sounds like staying north, inside of 100 FOW is the safe bet.

  5. We tried to go out last night. . . Got out to 70 FOW and turned around. When you look out the window and the waves are even with the hardtop, there will be no fishing. We hit some legitimate 7 footers. My out of town guest were used to it, as they fish in Chesapeake Bay, but even they realized there would be no fishing. End uop with a very interesting boat ride.

  6. Jon,

Have you been using any meat rigs?

Fishing is extremely good out of Grand Haven right now! Limit catches of King Salmon are occurring with an occasional Steelhead or Lake Trout being taken as well. These catches are the biggest and heaviest we have seen thus far this season out of Grand Haven.

The best water has been 130-170 feet of water, with the best action coming around 150-165 feet. Downriggers 85-160 feet down, wire divers back 150-280 feet, braid divers back 250-300 feet, 13-20 colors of lead core, and 300 ft.-450 ft. of copper are producing fish as well.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size and Rapture Trolling Flies with Pro-Troll flashers. The flasher/fly bite has been getting better and better everyday, so we have been using less and less spoons each day. Consistent spoons for a few bites have been the Glo Dolphin Stingray, Wiggle Stingray, Gator Stingray, and Mixed Veggies Stingray. The best fly by far has been the Oceana Rapture Trolling Fly. This has been working every morning behind an 11 inch White/Pearl Fishscale HotChip flasher, 8 inch Blue/Blue Hologram/Crushed Glow ProChip flasher, and an 8 inch White/Double Crushed Glow ProChip flasher. Other hot combinations have been the 8 inch Green/Glow ProChip with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly, 8 inch White/Green Hologram/Crushed Glow ProChip with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly, and the 8 inch Natural Born Killer Stinger ProChip flasher with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly. Other flies that have been working are the Hit Man No-See-Um Rapture Trolling Fly, Last Supper Rapture Trolling Fly, Green No-See-Um Rapture Trolling Fly, and the Frosted Fern Rapture Trolling Fly, with these all being fished behind an 8 inch White/Double Crushed or Double Slick Glow ProChip flasher.

Fishing is fantastic right now! Get out and enjoy the limit catches of King Salmon being caught right now! Good luck and good catching to all!

  7. Team Hollandpiper was also out last night - Alex, Randy, Dave, & Eric. We started out shallower @ 7:00 p.m. Our 1st (only) fish came before we had a 8 rod spread set up. 14# King on a White Spinnie & Green Fly on Wire Mag Dipsie - 120 back in 93 FOW. That was the highlight of the night, which took us as deep as ~150 FOW and as shallow as 55 FOW.

Shortly after the 1st fish, we had the left rigger fire @ 73' down - this was a fair size King which took a couple of jumps out of the water and spit the hook!?!?!

Much later, while heading back east, the right rigger fired - also set deep, with my favorite all time lure - magnum Michael Jackson. This fish kept on going & going, then the reel malfunctioned!?!?!? We tried to tire the fish, to hand-line or thumb drag it in, and it broke off?!?!?!

Pulled lines ~11:30 p.m., saw Nailer @ the dock, and sulked home.

BTW, the waves built to ~3 foot rollers and are certainly nasty today!?!?

  8. We also fished Sat. a.m. It was not your typical July fishing, but we found some:

4 in ~84 FOW, all @ the same GPS mark:

    13.5# King - 1/2 color & TGAFISH's secret J-Plug

    5.5# Steelie - same set-up

    ??# Lost Fish - same set-up

    5# King - Rigger 57 down & Michael Jackson

    1 in ~90 FOW:

Small Laker - 87 down & JP Slammer NBK

Nice morning on the lake, but I have never had fleas so bad. . . on all set-ups and coated on the rigger cable.

Sunday afternoon was spent on a nice family trip north of PS, relaxing @ the beach. Oh well. . . back to the grind.

  9. for a guy who is looking for a rider so he can fish a tourney you would think he would pick the words he uses a little better like gas money would be very helpfull. just reading this post makes me wonder what kind of guys i'd be fishing with.

So, I guess I can count you out?

With gas price @ $4/gal and $150 fill-ups, it is no longer an option. The multiple punctuation marks should convey that.

Also, I'm not looking for a rider to fish the tourney; I am looking to give someone without a boat a ride.

  10. I was (am) the 23' SeaRay, light blue w/ white hard top. We probably only hit ~2 miles north of the stacks.

The antenna makes the difference. I have a 8' Shakespeare > http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=29295&pdesc=8_Shakespeare_VHF_Antenna_with_4_way_nylon_ratchet_mount&aID=18I&merchID=1009&r=view. We were picking up reports from north of GH to Saugatuck(~:

P.S. BTW, where's "by South Haven". I live in north Holland, but work in South Haven - the old Clarion/Double J plant.

  11. Unreel,

We were out there also and actually saw the temperature breaks on the surface - areas of calmer water. We went 3/4 - 2 Lakers (8.25# each) & a nice King (12.25#). One of each on a copper setup with a Grean/Blue Spinnie & Seaweed Fly and a Laker on a wire dipsey with a Green Spinnie & White Fly. Sounds like we were fishing the same water. I also had a grounding issue. . . but @ the launch coming in. The water level is high, and so is the sand & silt)~:
