The NOAA forecast has really gone downhill the last couple years. My dad and I have had several trips wrecked because waves a foot or less turned into 2 foot whitecaps. This morning we went out right before first light and had to bail because of brutal fog that wasn't on the marine forecast. We trolled from 5:30 to about 10 and wound up 2 for 6. We started out in 65 ft to see if any of the stuff we were marking would materialize. Almost right away the first downrigger I set took a good hit but got off after a couple head shakes. After about a half hour we started trolling out and picked up an 18# king in 76 fow on the same downrigger. After a bit of a dry my dad noticed one of our downriggers was pulling funny so I brought it up and it had about a 1# coho on it. Shortly after setting it back down in about 100 feet that same downrigger took a hit but it didn't stay on. After another dry spell we slid out to 140 and our 300 copper took back to back hits but both got off about half way in. Not sure why we had such a hard time keeping the things on. We had lines in at about 5 and got blown off the lake around 8. We must've missed something based on recent reports because we started at 70 and couldn't buy a mark or a hit. We eventually migrated out to 95 ft with no luck then went back to 70. On the way back in we took a hit on a 5 color lead that shook off. Back at 70 we got stuck inside a line of boats so we spent some time in there and picked off an 8 lb king on a downrigger 55 down. After awhile we found a gap and went back out and took a 7 lb coho on a 200 copper and missed a hit on the same downrigger as soon as we got the coho in. Shortly after that the wall wind hit. Maybe we jumped the gun but we didn't like how fast it went from glass to white caps, and our 18 foot open bow doesn't handle waves well so we bailed. It definitely felt like a whiffed outing considering the fact we were off the lake at 8 with only two fish. Another pretty short trip. We fished from 6 am to about 9:30 am from 100 to about 145 back and forth. Before I could get the third line down we took a 5# king in 105 feet. Not too long after in about 115 the same downrigger took a clear hit that didn't hook. After an hour or so we hooked one in about 130 that spit it right at the back of the boat. We were getting decent marks the whole time but they just weren't that aggressive. First trip of the season, latest start in years thanks to the crappy weather earlier this month. We went everywhere from 80 ft to 170 searching for consistent marks and wound up settling around 140. We ended up 1 for 2* (2 for 3 if you count a skippy). We lost a nice king right behind the boat then landed a 1# coho and brought up a skippy king when we pulled lines. Everything came right around 140 ft. Hopefully it gets better from here. Not a lot went right. We set lines at 6 in about 100 ft. Right away we had back to back hits on our downriggers but neither stayed on. Within about an hour we were already retreating to 80 ft due to waves building. After an hour or so of nothing in 80 ft we went into 60 ft and saw some enticing marks. We spent a little over an hour throwing everything we had at them but no takers so we decided to try the pier heads. We did a few laps in and out of the harbor and skirted the mud line but only managed a sheephead and a bass so we bagged it. I normally love a turnover but it's looking like this one just scattered the fish as we couldn't mark any consistent bait or fish. We trolled from 6 to 8:30 straight out from Holland until the heat basically drove us off. We went 3 for 4, all in just under 120 ft. Basically as soon as we got our rods set we hit a 7# king on a downrigger then missed a second one immediately following it. Less than 10 minutes later we got a double header on our 300 copper and a downrigger and landed both, basically twin 6# kings. After that it's like someone flipped a switch and the bite stopped. We went out to 140 and into 110, marking fish the whole way but no takers. I'm hoping we're getting immature fish, I'd hate to see a spawning class running this small. We fished from 5:30 to 9 am straight out of Holland, ending up 4 for 7 on the day. As soon as I got the third line down in about 110 ft we hooked into something huge on a downrigger that ran deep into our backing before swimming into our 300 copper and creating a rats nest tangle and getting off. As we were hauling that mess in we hit a 2# king on the other downrigger. In the time it took for me to recover all my gear from the copper tangle the exact same downrigger went off four straight times, landing a 9# king, 10# king, 3# steelhead, and missing something else all in 120 ft. Once I got the other lines back in the bite stopped so we went into about 100 ft and missed another hit before going in. I don't count this as a hit but reeling one of my lines in something followed it up. It definitely feels like that tangle cost us some fish as it completely incapacitated our 300 copper and took about 30 minutes to re rig and set the other downrigger in the middle of a flurry. Shout out to my lead core and 200 copper for contributing nothing. The steelhead we got had a crazy kype for being in the summer.
