GRAND HAVEN -- If PETA can't protect horses in Holland, the animal rights organization is going to try to hook the public on safeguarding fish in Grand Haven.

The national group on Wednesday asked the National Park Service if it could take control of the iconic Grand Haven lighthouses, where it would serve faux fish sticks in a cafe there and inform people about the alleged torment fish endure when hooked or netted.

Earlier this year, the park service declared the Grand Haven lights were available under the National Lighthouse Preservation Act, which allows the transfer of ownership to groups to preserve the beacons.

A representative for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the light would serve as the national headquarters for its fish empathy project.

The center would display a 300-square-foot quilt that pays tribute to the billions of fish needlessly killed for their flesh or abused by anglers, PETA said. The group also would open a cafe at the lighthouses serving faux fish sticks and other vegetarian dishes.

And every visitor 12 and under will be given a free plush toy fish emblazoned with the tagline "Fish Are Friends, Not Food!"

PETA has tried unsuccessfully to snare other lighthouses, which are available to federal agencies, state and local governments, nonprofit corporations and community development organizations.

  2. d00d...you may also want to hold the fish like your milt-covered buddy...tail them and cradle your other hand under them, rather than jamming your hand up their gills. Unless you are going to string the fish up (which I hope you didn't do with these nasty fish), shoving your hand up their gills will do them NO good if you are releasing them. Their gills are their lungs, and are easily damaged, rendering them useless and resulting in the ultimate death of the fish. Best of luck in the future!

    all fish were successfully released

  3. Me and a buddy mark went out for some trout yesterday at a river in Rockford and found a nice little pod of steel under the 10 mile bridge so using our 4lb test and ultra lights ( i had a 7' and he had a 5 1/2 ') we ended up each getting a nice steel under the bridge and continue down stream. i end up getting 1 nice brown and a nice bow under a willow tree as well as hooking anther steel but mark feel in while trying to net it and landed on my line and broke me off. ended up getting 2 more big trout before the pump hole, ( now i am at 4 keeper trout BTW all where released) he gets a nice bow just down river and i end up getting 3 more before the oak street bridge. by this point we are like 2 for 5ish on the steel.... we fish down further and find the mother load of steel! must have been 30 fish on 3 diff beds and they were hitting EVERYTHING raps, egg sucking Leach's, spinners, ANYTHING. we fishing from 10am till almost 7 and we caught more then 50 trout and 15 or so steel.... could not take pics of everything but from what we did here are the pics.

  5. Fished for a couple hours yesterday with no luck at all. Was shocked to look up and see a net flag. There are 2 nets about 3 miles south of Holland. 1st flag is in 30fow and runs straight out to 2nd flag in 50fow. Second net starts in 60fow and I'm guessing runs out to 80/90fow, but I didn't go out there to see. We saw no side marker flags. The north lat # for both nets is 43.750.

I thought nets were not allowed this far south, and I though they could be no shallower than 60fow. I like to know whose they are and where they are tending them from.

Everybody better keep an eye out because there could easily be more. It doesn't make sense to come this far for only 2 nets. If your not fimilar with nets, what you want to watch for is 6' poles with penant flags. Nets usually run east and west between the 2 ploes and are 30' off the bottom down to the bottom. There are suppose to be side markers about 2 foot tall to mark the width
