  1. When I was at the D&R sports how last weekend, they said boats were already brown fishing out of some northern Indiana ports. River ports ussually open up the fastest. You may want to take a look at some of the webcams on this sight. You can ussually get a good barometer for what is happening at each port. fyi
  2. Gas is going to do what gas is going to do. I try not to dwell on it because it's out of my realm of control. I do feel for the folks that require a lot of fuel. Fishing fuel doesn't effect me too badly because my boat uses very little fuel. However, the diesel prices really put a crunch on farmers. My family farm had a bad year last year due to the drought like conditions, which caused those expensive irrigation engines to run for longer duration. And then there's the tractors working the fields, particularly in spring......those things need a lot of power/fuel.....
  3. I personally like cut hearing strips, particularly the ones that have that herring oily stuff in them. They fit nicely into most meat rig heads and the oily herring sauce stays with the meat nicely. I've used various sized flashers and all with success. I own more 8-10" flashers and tend to go to them first and adjust from there, but that's not really anything concrete. my 2cents,
  4. I like the Twinkie glow bait rigs for the lower light conditions best. I've just had the best luck with them in lower light, probably because the tape on them has a strong glow characteristic to it. I've always run them behind spin doctors and pro chip flashers, so I dont' have any experience with the kingfisher. I also home make some of my own bait rigs with small flies and sticks/beads to get the spacing and leader length to my liking. White and blue mixed with white and green has been my favorite.
  5. I normally run 8" and 10" flashers in front of 3 or 4 fly rigs.
  6. The D&R show was very good. I saw and said hi to Mike, though he was deffinately busy doing the meet and greet as well as offereing advice. Unfortunately, I missed his presentation, but saw the one at noon. I also picked up a Cannon Lure Speed and Temp monitor for $429 as a show special. I grabbed one more pair of those church boards, too! They had all of the Bert's gear at 10% off as well as a lot of spoon specials and 20% off of my personal favorite plugs, Lyman lures. They had some nice trees there for pretty good prices. I've gotten some good advice over the years on how to set up and fish my smaller boat(18' Lund). I hope the show was successful enough that they make it an annual thing. I really enjoyed it and spent PLENTY of money, too!
  7. great suggestions!! These are all very important, particularly the brake and bearing check. It's no fun at all to do emergency repairs! I would add to ensure all tie down straps are in good condition. Last summer I saw a boat off in a ravine on I-94. I'm not sure if it was strap failure, but there was no trailer under that boat in the ravine. It made me check and ultimately replace my straps.
  8. I won't be able to fish until after April 11th, but I think the channel ice will be out about the 3rd week of March.
  9. Nice ride! That's certainally a big lake fishin' machine!
  10. Thanks for the reply! That does help me a bit as I intend to install one on my cannon electrics this spring.
  11. I read on the Fish Dog site under the info for the Cannon lure speed/temp indicator that the Cannon unit would not interfere with the short stop feature. I know the Cannon can be used with either coated or non-coated cable, but the article makes it seem as though it does not matter. I know the Cannon rigger short stop uses the water to boat to cable circuit as the stopping device. When the cable snap leaves the water, the continuity is broken and shuts the downrigger motor off. Anyone have a coated cable installed with the Cannon riggers? I know I'm intending on buying a Cannon lure speed/temp indicator and would be interested to know.
  12. Congrats on the new toy! After 5 years of telling myself I need to get one, I'm also installing a Cannon lure/speed/temp indicator this spring. I haven't decided for sure which rigger it will be installed on yet, but probably on one side because my 2 side riggers are electrics and my 2 middle riggers are manual. I often run body baits in the spring with pretty good success. I phase them out as I get farther into the season for the exception of an occaisonal steely chaser up on a 3 or 5 color core in that mid-June to mid-July time frame. I've done well with the blue and silver body baits, like a tail dancer or x-rap, on the smaller cores as a tail gunner up higher in the water column for steelys. Other than that, I 100% agree with what Priority 1 says and do close to the same thing, especially the zig-zag and using a speed that gets good action into the bait.
  13. This is going to sound like a broken record, but I like the 5am-10am and then 4:30-10:00pm time frame, too. I like the mornings a little better, but those afternoon trips with some co-workers after work are certainly a blast! Most of our best catch rates came in the evenings last year, too.
  14. It seems to me that the South Haven event had less boats in 2007 than it did in 2006?? Either way, I can see the benefit of trying to boost entries. With costs of everything increasing, it's tough to keep alluring possible anglers who've never done one of these before. That South Haven tournament does certainly have that reputation of high wind days! We fished last year until it was called on Sunday. The boat does a mean hill climb! Overall, I think the South Haven tournament is very well run and organized. That's a big part in why we'll be fishing it again this year.
  15. I've got 4 cannons, all older than 5 years, and none of them have an issue with 12lb weights. I'd agree with the sediment that there's deffinately an issue with the riggers if you are having a problem with 12lb weights. Also, Cannon has service center information on thier website as well as a corporate technical assistance center. I'm sure they can help you with your issue.
  16. What kind of riggers do you have? Some riggers have drags that allow you to spool them down instead of powering them down with the motors. The slipping sounds like a drag could be adjusted tighter. Any other details? Age of the riggers? What kind of noise? Any other issues that make you nervous?
  17. LOL I doubt that Clinton can overcome the momentum from Obama to win the Democratic nomination, so then I'll have a real choice to make between McCain and Obama. So far, my first choice candidates aren't doing so well. I liked Fred Thompson, Joe Biden, and John Edwards. I'm kind of tired about hearing about race/gender on the democratic ticket. As much as I'd hate for somebody not to get the nomination due to race/gender, I'd hate equally as much for somebody to win the nomination because of race/gender. I guess we'll see how it plays out......
  18. I agree with the catches being mostly in the 12-14lb range. I only had 2 fish that were over 18lbs, and both of them came on the same July night. Lake Michigan is such a complex ecosystem. One thing is for certain; the state can stand to loose the kind of tourism money that would be lost if the fishery on Lake Michigan declines to point it won't support good fishing.
  19. I was looking at those same rod holders! I might wait to see how yours look before I order mine since we have close to the same boat.
  20. I've never noticed a difference with dipsey colors. I've got a few different colors, but I think the presentation behind it is what makes the difference. my 2cents,
  21. I'm probably going to get shot, but I am basing my candidate on strictly 2 things; health care and economics. Before we can put forth a 100% effort overseas, we need to be 100% at home. I also feel Obama, Clinton, and McCain would all be a great improvment over George Bush, who I feel has been an overwhelming disappointment to the republican party and to the country. I also think the overall pool of candidates this election cycle is way better than the Kerry/Bush cycle of the last election. How'd we get stuck with that!!??!?!? So, prior to his withdrawl from the race, I was big on John Edwards, not only for my 2 big issues of health care and ecnomics, but also for his upbringing(son of poor family) and his policy on energy. Unfortunately, his race was done before it started. Thus, my current support is for Clinton. Her stance on health care and economics is very similiar to Edwards. I don't have anything bad to say about either Obama or McCain, as I think either one of them would also be very capable leaders. Clinton is just my current choice, but I reserve the right to change my mind Once all of the running mates are established and more detailed information on each candidates' policies is available, then I'll revisit who will get my vote.
  22. I have not done anything with mine and won't until April I have my professional engineering exam to take on April 11th. It is 8 hours long and requires a lot of focus to study for it. I know the only way I'll be disciplined enough to put in adequate studying it to postpone getting the boat out. However, I'm planning on adding a new custom cockpit cover to replace my existing cover, a cannon lure speed/temp indicator, a pair of Berts trees, and a lighting system similiar to the one GLF posted. Lucky for me I have a great crew who all volunteered to hammer all of the work out in a weekend I'm sure with thier help, we'll be out on the lake the 2nd or 3rd weekend of April.
  23. I actually bought a Garmin unit last year(2007) that was due for discontinuation for this model year(2008). I had the same concern, so I called the Garmin service department(which was great) and asked them about it. They said the unit would be fully servicable with no issue. In the unlikely event the unit needed replacement, I'd likely recieve a factory reburbishment unless there was still residual stock left in inventory. The refurbishment would carry the same warranty as the new unit. The Garmin service website would also continue to carry updates and map downloads. I suspect Lowrance opporates in a similiar fashion, so maybe it's worth the phone call if you're trying to save a little coin.
  24. I really like my F-150. The torque down low(less than 2000rpm) is what I like most. That's very valuable torque for me since I'm often hauling extremely heavy loads, like loaded corn wagons or hay wagons, across rutted fields.
  25. I voted Kings just due to the larger size, but if it came down to a pound per pound toughness and enjoyment, I'd swing toward Steelys in a heartbeat.
