  1. I just want to gripe a second about that video. That was not developed by the guy named and him taking credit is wrong. It is called and egg loop or a west coast bumper hitch. It is used in steelhead fishing to attach egg yarn or a piece of skein roe to the hook without burying the hook and incorporating a corky to add color and float off the bottom. It has been used on the west cost for thirty years at least as that is about when i learned to tie it from Tom Schneider nicknamed Corky Man from the detroit area. That knot works best with an upbend eye hook like a 37160 mustad. I was tying that knot when they still had the fishing show at the Silver dome. OK off my soap box now.

Just a note i would use a regular snell over this one for trolling.

  2. Linedancin,

It's basically a simple, overhand knot. I'll try to describe to the best of my ability.

Take the end of your wire and thread it through the swivel. Bring the end back up doubling the wire and forming a loop with the swivel hanging. Take the doubled up wire above the swivel and wrap it around your finger once, then thread the swivel through the loop you created by wrapping the wire around your finger. Pull it as tight as you can get it and trim your tag end.

Believe me, it's a lot simpler to tie than that sounds!!

    Good luck!

Is this like what you are using:

I might try this one out it is different than the one i was originally shown.

  3. Thats wht i didn't like them Jim. I love my sharks. I have 10 lb. i also had finned 10s and there is less blowback with the sharks over the round finned. Now i want to try this deep water program i have been hearing and reading so much aboput but i nee more weight to get deeper. I have walker tourney series which are rated up to 15 lb. I was figuring if i could get a torpedo type at that weight i may swing away from sharks. But with the lloking i have been doing i am thinking i am going to have to order to 15s 69.99 each plus shipping. I saw atomic is making a 13 but i want it as heavy as i can go.

  4. I am currently runnnig 10 lb sharks on my boat. I am looking for 15lb, sharks torpedo, or, fish type weights, that i can pick up somewhere in state and not have to pay for shipping. Prefferably on the southwest side as i travel all over this area. Has anyone seen a tackle shop with something similar to what i want. I dont want any form of pancake.

  5. Here is a neat site for knots I use the Albright to connect a lot of stuff all my wire is tied to the backer with a Albright knot. I used to use crimps on my wire ends but have pretty much gone to knots as it is easier to see a problem with a knot on wire then a crimp. Crimps tend to look fine till they fail knots start to fray and get ugly so you can see when you need to cut them back and retie. Every time one of my diver connections fails it is about 40 bucks so I am trying to stop failure alltogether.

what knot are you using to connect your wire to the swivel(diver end)

  6. Thanks guys. Great info, Good to hear from you Aaron, by the way how do you guys like to connect wire to backers and leader? crimps with small swivels? I see some guys are tying it on with good results.

    thanks again

What i do for my backer under my wire is tie an albright knot from the backer to the wire. the wire gets shaped in a U and the mono or dacron is wrapped around it. Do a search in yahoo on animated albright knot and it is pretty easy to follow the steps. For my connection to the swivel for the diver i use a crimp. I know some people that tie the different wire knots, but i have not had much luck with them.

  7. Go with the offshore orange SST boards. These boards are designed to pull the heavier weights of lines that we are now using. Do like maniac said put a little screw eye low int he back of the board (there is a starter hole there) to put an OR-16 off shore release on to peg the line so you can fight the fish without the board on the line. Make sure when you attach the board to the lone that the lie is behind the peg in the release. Also get rid of the release whether it be the off shore or the church they both suck for heavy line and get the big jon otter release. i can pull a 450 and 600 copper on these and they only release when a fish hits. attach it with a good quality split ring. I have four sets of the church boards as that is what everyone kind of started with and hardly ever use them any more after trying out the SST boards. They are a litttle more out of pocket but they are worht it the way they get the lines out to the side of the boat. They do track better than the church boards.

  8. Ryan,

The best reel for a 150' of copper is an okuma 45. You can get 300 yds of 50 lb power pro backing and the 150 of copper on the reel no problem.

The 300' an okuma 55 series and you can get 300 pp 50lb backing

take a look at this thread to see how i was telling you to set the copper to the swivel connection up.

    http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12547

When i set up my copper i run backing 50 lb power pro, then 50 ft of 30 lb mono for my board connection, then the length of copper, and finally 30 ft of 20 lb gamma fluorocarbon leader. If you dont use mono for your board connection the board tends to walk down the super braid and it cuts in to the release. the release i was telling you about at bass pro id the big jon otter relase. Also if you use mono as a backer although cheaper you wont get nearly as much on the real for backer. Also the mono will show signs of wear so you can cut it back and retie it. the super braids tend to break before you see any signs of wear.

Wire divers i am using the okuma 45 line counters with 1000ft of 30 lb wire. I back it either with 30 lb test mono. or just braided dacron 30lb test.

  9. Thanks for the info everyone. I ended up with a bad head cold so that put a damper on the whole weekend. There was also an ice storm up there and that made walking along the river real fun. I ended up going out for about an hour sunday by the baot launch and had no hits. I tried spawn, and wax worms. Talked to another guy and he said it was really slow over the couple days prior. Oh well at least i got out and wet a line for a little while.

  10. Talked to Outdoorsman in jenison and gold coast in port sheldon. They are having their open houses and sales on march 7th. Last year they had some pretty good deals. Just thought i would let everyone know. Outdoorsman is actually goiong to start their sales prices on the 5th. Goldcoast will be doing a grill out around lunch time.

  11. It really is a matter of how much action you want on the fly? Longer lengths seem to reduce or change the fly action I stick with 3 times the flasher length and it works for me.

"3 times the flasher length and it works for me"

Like Mainiac i run the length 3 times the flasher size. This was the adage used back in the old days when fishing with a dodger and squid started. It worked for my dad on his boat and now on mine, so i guess, if it aint broke don't fix it, comes in. As far as line on flise i just use mono 50 lb ande. On evetyrhing else Gama Flourocarbon

  12. I have all my gear spead throughout the basement right now, almost all organized. This weekend i have to pull the pump motor for my trim tabs and send it in to have the housing replaced. It cracked at the end of last season and the oil bottle is held up with a zip tie right now. So they are going to replase the housing clean it test it, and make any adjustments. alli need right now is the four new tekotas and i will be ready. Oh and i need to get rid of the pile of snow in front of it so i can pull it out. Man this has been a long winter.

  13. I have never used copper wire line before as I have always used mono and lead core so I would like some information. What rods and reels are recommended? Can you use wire line on a downrigger or just for dipseys? How is the wire line spooled onto the reel? Do you use mono to start the spooling and then tie the wire onto the mono?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Fishhunter

I run all copper and no lead core now. For a rod you can use most anything as copper is soft and will not damage guides. Diawa heartland planer board rods work great. I have found using a 10 foot ocean surf spinning rod worked the best. Reels depends on what depths you are trying to achieve. 75 foot reaches about the same depth as a half core, 150 feet reaches the same as a full core and 300 feet gets down to 70 to 80 feet about the same as a two core. Maniac is right the dive curves show it as deeper but at 2.6 mph with 300 feet in 80 foot of water i have brought up zebra mussles. Another thing to consider with copper is you don't have rot issues like with leadcore. Lead core DOES rot, some guys will claim it doesn't but it does. Depending on conditions lead core can last from three to five years. Four years ago(which switched me to copper) i had a problem with the lead core breaking by hardly pulling on it. called Gudebrod they said to send it in to them. their verdict is it was rotten and i had only fished with it a few seasons. Copper doesn't rot it will last as long as you don't loose it. Reels if you are looking at okuma reels a convector

35 will hold 300 yds pp 50lb backing and 75 ft 45lb copper.

45 series 300 yds pp 50 lb backing and 150' copper.

55 series 150 yds pp and 300 ft copper.

Another thing to note is copper doesnt hang in the thermal cline causing the rig to fish shallower. Copper is fished just like lead core not off a downrigger. It can be run as a swr very nicely. Attachment from copper to backing is very simple. a spro number 8 swivel is used. tie a palamor with backing to one end. put about inch and a half copper through the eye of the swivel and twist it thight. Another thing about copper differnet manufacture make if differently. the claim is that howies is the heaviest out there. weight achieves depth. I was proven wrong two years ago by the owner of takcle haven in benton harbor. Otpi- tackle is heavier per inch than the howies brand. it is also a little thicker. but it is closer to the dive curve than howies. it is also twisted more which make tying knots with it easier. If you are using shimano tekotas the line guide is wide enough to use an albright knot instead of the swivel. here are a couple picks of the knot

If you have any other question don't hesitate to ask.

  14. I have been trying to get primers and powder for my 300wsm and can't get it. People are so afraid of the tax they are talking about and the hair brained antis bills that are going to be coming up that as soon as a shop gets some stuff in around here it is gone. Peoiple are stocking up. Its amazing how stuff is selling right now because of the scare. I have actually started doing the same a little, but am thinking i may need to get some more ammo and put it away.
