  1. I am thinking the same as Hondam that the trolling motor is 24v and nothing else should be wired to those batteries. All of the higher power trolling motors are 24 or 36v because the amp draw would be too high at 12v. I just looked up the PDV2 it is 24v as is all the 70lb thrust models on the fresh water list.

  2. Who hid the fish? Congrats to Drift for the winning box 83.9 points I think he and Don had more miles on the boat than points but Fishsniffer ran his new boat to 2nd place with 80 points, Big fish and 3rd went to Double D's with a 48.6 point box and a 15.1lb King. Here is the sad news on how the rest of us did.

5 skunks 4 single fish boxes 1 2fish box so 10 out of 12 boats had 2 fish or less. Only 2 boats weighed 6 fish and they ran to Saugatuck and back to do it. Great turnout just the fish forgot their invite we will make them RSVP next time see everyone in 2 weeks for round 2.

  3. He is a bit off course on the alewives since the lake was so full of them you could just about walk on water and the Lake Trout died off because of them. Salmon were introduced to get rid of the Alewives so we could have native fish back. The new strain of lake trout is not as good as what we had back then, But compared to west coast Salmon our salmon taste like crap I would much rather eat Browns and Steelhead any day. And by the way they are also non native fish imported to replace the Grayling and Brooke trout we killed off when we timbered off most of the state.

  4. For me it is about me actually being able to fish without yelling at friends or family members because they can't drive the boat. Most of my friends and family are amazed at how easy i drive my boat yet when they try and drive it within minutes they are fighting the wheel back and forth trying to stay on course. Because they often under steer early and over steer late. The auto pilot simply adjusts to course changes as they happen and once it finds a pattern even prepares for some of them. The big game changing event is when you realize other than watching out in front of you you can do other things besides drive. Being able to leave the helm on a snotty day to help land a triple short handed is a blessing. Imagine quartering into 2 to 4ft waves all day and never touching the wheel. The second thing is tuning my troll if I notice my gear is pulling to starboard I simply move the AP a few deg to port and my gear is running correct. Not one person complained about the driver last year and he never took the last beer.

  5. Sherman that is what several of us have and they work pretty good I upgraded to the P70R controller which i like better. Adding the rudder reference would also improve it I may do that later but it fishes pretty good most days without it.

  6. Never seen a OMC Cobra that was not power assist cable steering so no the 1000 won't work without spending a ton of money. I gave up and bought a X5 last year it works pretty good. Get the P70R controller and the X5 Core Pack not world class but under 2 grand and will drive your boat just fine.

  7. I have 2 CV55L's with 450 of Blood Run on them they have 150 yds of Power pro 30 a short section of mono on the reel spool and 15yds of 40lb mono for board attachment and 20lb leader no issues. I know guys are running a 450 on a 800 but my calculator says it won't fit.

  8. Well Terry is partly right however this would be the final production which actually shares some lower unit parts with the Cobra Drives the upper gear box is however nearly the same as the one Terry had but in a different exhaust housing. This the part that will drive you nuts as there are 400 series and 800 series both were made in electric shift, Hydro Mechanical. and Mechanical shift. Prior to 76 they were all electric shift in 77 they changed the exhaust housing and lower unit to hydro mechanical shift. In 81 they changed the lower unit to cable mechanical shift and in 85 they went to the Cobra drive which other than early lower units was a complete new drive. Upper units came in tall and short boxes and multiple gear ratios as it was used to change the final drive to match the motor. I'll be honest I would not take one for free any more that does not mean they can't be a good drive just that they left a bad taste in my mouth. Sending my Cobalt to the landfill was my last straw. Another lasting memory was from my brother who had me help build a engine for a friend of his to put in his boat. It had a early electric shift drive and while doing a final tune at 5400 RPM the shift solenoid shorted out and slammed into reverse taking the transom out and sinking the boat in seconds. As he put it one min they were hauling butt the next the back of the boat was gone. Luckily it was a short swim to shore. This of course is not typical since very few people put that much HP thru one of those drives as it was likely making 400 plus HP at that RPM and the motor was a replacement for a OMC 120hp so some of it was being young and stupid.

  9. That is funny to see a Stringer on a 86 since they quit building it in late 84 so some were on 85's. On that boat it would be a 400 series Stringer drive the trim is on the front of the engine you raise and lower the engine to trim the drive. The rear motor is to raise and lower the unit which must be fully down when running. To be honest they were a good drive but parts are nearly gold plated in price now. I had a 85 Cobalt with one and cost to fix the drive was more than the boat was worth 10 years ago it is in a landfill in Muskegon now. Cobalts are not cheap boats either. I still have a few parts left over from my project.

  10. As many will notice there are no major rule changes this year the only wording changes were to allow for the extra events. This is about to change we are making the Port Championship a captains challenge. What this means is all events will return to 100% payout we will no longer hold back 5 dollars per boat for the Port Championship. We will set aside 5 dollars per entry for big fish of that event all remaining money will be paid for

    1st at 50%

    2nd at 30%

    3rd at 20%

this is based on 20 boats or less after 21 boats we will go to

    1st at 40%

    2nd at 30%

    3rd at 20%

    4th at 10%

Big fish will still be winner take all of the pooled money for big fish.

Now as to the Port Championship anyone who wishes may enter and it will be a one time entry fee of $100.00 which will be paid the same as a normal event IE we will pay 1st 2nd and 3rd at the normal percentages. The Port Championship will still be a best total score of your best 5 events so you still have 2 throwaway events. I did not think to discuss a entry deadline with Don however unless he has another idea my thought is you must decide on doing the Port Championship on or before weigh in at the May 25th event. This will however be open for discussion until Don and I reach a final decision.

  11. I got to spend a hour with the guys from Smart Troll today pretty cool product. I honestly think I would go with the Fish Hawk X4D for what I do however I and several others here are not on the same learning curve as others. The reason I say that is I am pretty comfortable in my program. However many would greatly benefit from the extra data it could provide. So in that I am gonna stay more old school and fish to my strengths rather than chase new toys. So I won't have a talking fish finder or be checking my phone to see what my lures are doing.

  12. I thought the MDNR was the ones stating 12g guns were not legal on charter boats. They certainly are allowed by the WDNR and USCG in Wisconsin. I can not see the USCG making different regulations for separate states.

To my understanding you are correct however from my past experience as a Coast Guard Boarding officer we enforced the local rules as well as the federal laws. Also I am not a commercial vessel so the rules are different for me than other boats. My uncle is a 100 ton captain in AK he is required to declare what he is doing before he leaves port since the rules he fishes under change based on what he is doing. IE if he is commercial fishing he operates under one set of rules for the entire trip the rules for Subsistence fishing are different as are the rules for Sport fishing.

  13. Ryan is also correct on the fact some areas consider them weapons. I was told by a friend of mine that he can't have one on his boat even with a carry permit because it is considered a weapon. Pretty bad when one of the most effective flares is not legal in some areas. Canada treats them the same as a pistol.

  14. I alternate replace one then replace the other unless you have a ditch bag odds are you will only grab one a flare gun has further visibility however hand held flares mark where you are at. With the range you can see a aerial flare at night even though someone will see it they could still be many miles away.
