  1. Here's the best advise I can give when it comes to trying to save your probe. First and for most, put it on its own rigger, and don't fish with that rigger, I have mine on a older walker that I had in the basement, doing that will allow you raise and lower the probe to check temp and speed as your fishing at different levels in the water column, look at the cost of a probe or 2 and one of the cheaper riggers make pretty good since. I don't really have enough room for a dedicated rigger just for the probe. I will have to think about this. I was being very careful with it since it was brand newBig Jon makes a good rigger but if it doesn't have the stop when it breaks the surface, put it on it or stay away from it, you roll those big snaps up onto the front wheel than can open them. I was using Canon terminators and have older Walker electrics. The snap was no where near the pulley when it broke, it had just broke the surface of the water when it snapped. I really think it was just because my cable was super old and way past due to be changed, I have had these riggers for many years, and I hardly ever used them, so I did not even think about changing the cables on a regular basis, they looked perfectly fineSecond, you need to hook the probe itself to the main rigger cable, then a dropper of some sort, be it a Scotty snubbed another pc of rigger cable doesn't matter, the big thing here is the snap swivel used to attach the ball to the probe, they need to be cheap and rated for less than the poundage of your main line downrigger cable, if your ball gets hung up on the bottom or in a net you want that snap to fail !!! this is how I had it rigged, to the main snap, the cable broke just above the terminator, and it wasn't all curled up like it had slipped through the terminator, it was a flush break, again making me suspect a bad cablefirst.. So all and all nothing is fail safe, keep it off the bottom and stay AWAY from any nets.. any questions at all about this you can as here or PM me....

thanks! see my responses in red

  2. true you CAN run it in your crankcase! read the directions on the can!

I used it once in my lawn tractor to free a stuck ring from over the winter storage

But don't leave it in there, and its not going to do anything to a fuel system problem using it like this

    but you CAN use it!!

I was a mechanic too for 20+ years as Gnarf

  3. I am looking for a little advice on my rig.

Right now I have 2 Walker electrics with short booms

I fish them at right angles to the gunnels, they work fine this way.

A few years ago I bought 2 more with 4 ft booms.

I never did put them on for fear of it just being too much for this boat, even though I know lots of guys run 4 riggers on boats a lot smaller than mine.

I was going to mount them about 1/2 way between the back rigger and the Tite Lok holders.

Maybe then I would angle the corner riggers at a 45* instead. Just for separation, but that may not be needed? I don't know

I do have a 9.9 Yam kicker back there and with the platform on the other side makes for a busy transom. That rigger set at 90* doesn't come close to the kicker, not sure if I ran it at 45*

I usually also run 1 or 2 dipsys on each side, and once in a while leadcore down the chute.

Do you think this is too much? Should I just stick with the 2 riggers?

that's what my gut tells me, why I never installed the 4 footers.

    thanks

  4. I dug up my old GMT 40 and tried it this weekend

It still works fine but I forgot how to reset it after taking a reading. I tried turning it off and on but it still displays the previous readings.

Tried holding down the button for a while, did not work

even tried just sending it down again but that did not work either

then the battery ran out lol

anyone know how to do this?

    thanks

  5. thanks guys. It did not go well yesterday lol

Since it was rainy Sat morn I decided to just look over my rigging real well since I have not used my downriggers much over the past few years and now that I am getting back into it I figured this would be good to do

I noticed that the cable termination for the rigger the probe is used on was just some crimped on sleeves and a snap.

I then remembered this was from an emergency on the water repair from 2 years ago. I have used the rigger maybe 2 trips since then.

So I decided since I had the Cannon terminator kit I would put one on and fix it the right way.

So yesterday morning we fished west Grand Traverse bay for a few hours before I had to leave and head back home from the cabin. Other than no fish, it went fine for a few hours. I decided not to use the Scotty snubber and just use the breakaway rig that comes with the X4

About 1/2 way though our trip, I raise the ball and as it just clears the water the cable either breaks or slips out of the terminator and I loose everything, probe and all!!! I had maybe 4 hours total on this probe.

It was no where near the bottom at any time, I think the cable just broke from old age, I dunno. If it would have slipped out of terminator I think I would have seen the cable kinked from where it was threaded in the terminator, but it I was left with what looked like a clean break with a frayed end.

I have had there riggers (elec Walkers) for at least 20 years and got them used with a boat I had bought at the time. But they did not really see much use in all those years. The cables look ok, but I am just going to respool both of then and start from scratch

I also forgot my box of dipsys (they were still in the pole barn) so it was not a very good trip lol

on the bright side my DAV buddy took this doe on Sat off my property on the special youth/disabled hunt!

  6. Hi guys

I have a X4 with the breakaway tether between the probe and the ball.

I just bought some Scotty snubbers to use on my riggers.

Should I use this in addition to the X4 tether? When I connect them up it makes for a pretty long assembly from the rigger snap to the ball.

Or should I just not use the Scotty snubber on that rigger? I like the fact that its easier to grab then the bare cable

I have not used this yet. Will try tomorrow

    thanks

  7. I really, really do like my Grady White Adventure 208

Its a little on the small side, but its easy to tow, rides very nice and I can launch it myself.

A good custom trailer like I have is worth its weight in gold. Loads perfect every time.

If I could change anything I would repower with something more fuel efficient, but the old Johnson 200 just keeps ticking. I wont replace it until it dies

  8. Ok I see.

I guess I misspoke about the use of the snap swivels.

I want to buy them for my baits, not the wire connection

Just figured I would order everthnig at once, I see the Torpedos are a favorite, I was wondering what size I should order

And can I get the bright wire or should I wait until the smoke is available, looks like next year?

    thanks

  9. Guys I have decided to get the wire rigs together.

I am going to use 2 10ft Cabelas dipsey rods and Diawa 47 lc's (the older ones)

I have read your recommendations on wire, but what do I go with?

2 1000 ft spools of 30lb test, 19 strand Torpedo smoke?

the same in Blood Run 7 strand?

    Torpedo snap swivels- What size?

And I decided to get 2 Torpedo tips

so I really dont know which wire to go with and the size of the snap swivels I need

    thanks for the continued advice!!!

  10. All I have to say is $100 always turns into $1000! Just bought 6 more tekotas for the spring! Great end of the year deals at Bretts on the Bay.

Well for me $100 sometimes turns to $50 LOL

Anyway thanks for the idea on Bretts. I am on thier site, they have a lot of stuff. I will probably place order from them

  11. I understand about the releases, but I do have releases now.

And I do have plenty of terminal tackle.

The torpedo weights are an interesting thought

New line is always a good idea too

worm harnesses are not on my radar, I need more salmon stuff. Maybe later.

I just thought I would get more bang for my buck getting my wire rods setup, since I do not have any now and would like some before next season.

  12. I just thought this would be a fun discussion for a rainy Wed

I just sold something for $100.

I am going to spend it on salmon stuff.

    What would you buy?

I am just getting back into salmon fishing, I have most of the basic stuff.

I am thinking about spending it on rigging 2 wire dipsy rods. I have the rods and reels, but I dont have tips, wire, etc.

Just looking for ideas, things I may have overlooked

    thanks

  13. the ff t/d works just fine where it is, its not getting moved. I do not troll with the big motor and have never had an issue with it in that location.

thanks for the advice on the Fish Hawk t/d!!

I thought I had read in the directions that the 50hz setting might interfere with the 70?

If not I wont worry about it

  14. Guys-

Thinking about the best location. In the pic, you can see what I have.

My sonar t/d is a Airmar P66 50/200. Next to it is a bracket from an old broken t/d which I am going to remove.

On the other side there was another old t/d that is also leaving.

I would mount it on the kicker side but I dont think that would work.

The only other spot is where the broken t/d bracket is on the starboard side.

do you think this will work? Any thoughts are appreciated!

    thanks
