  2. I am like everyone else and read the reports. You can find almost everything you need in the reports. ie...water temps, how many FOW, how deep down, trolling speeds, directions, techiniques(divers, lead core, riggers, etc...), and what baits to use. You can eliminate a lot of unproductive water by reading the reports.

If I can not find a report from Muskegon, I look for reports at ports that are near(Grand Haven and Whitehall) it. Usually I can duplicate the depths I find at these ports and get them to work in Muskegon.

I have a really good idea on where to start, and what I will use before I leave the house .

In the early spring I watch the satellite photos, looking for warm water. During the summer, I usually dont check the satellite images. Instead, I mostly go by the fishing reports and the wind directions.

A West wind on Lake Michigan will pile up the warm water along Michigan, and blows the warm water away from Wisconsin. As the warm water is blown out of Wisconsin, it pulls the cold water in close.

An East wind on Lake Michigan will blow the warm water away from Michigan, and pulls cold water inclose underneath, close to shore. Look for a couple of days of hard blow for this to happen.

A South or Southwest wind on Lake Michigan will push the warm water up from the South along the Michigan coast.

A strong North or Northwest wind for a couple of days on Lake Michigan will push cold water along the Michigan coast. This is when I target shallower water.

  3. I sharpen all my hooks.

Before I start, I check to see if the hook is sharp on my thumb nail. My goal is to get the hook to "stick" with little pressure as I try to slide it across my thumb nail.

I sharpen all of my hooks with a small hook sharpening file I picked up from walmart for under a dollar. I sharpen 3 sides, and always sharpen towards the point.

I hold a treble hook so there is one hook on top pointing away from me.

    1. I do 5 strokes with the file on the left side going toward the point.
    2. I do 5 strokes with the file on the right side going toward the point.
    3. I do 5 strokes with the file on the top going toward the point.

I then check the point on my thumb nail to see how sharp it is. I put very light down pressure and move the hook away from my thumb. If it does not leave a scratch, or leaves a light one, I will look at the point and decide which side/top needs a couple more strokes with the file. My goal is to make it "stick", when I slide it across my thumb nail. When it "sticks", it's sharp!

  4. I changed the video modification for posting videos on the site. I am in the process of making a tutorial on how to upload them to youtube, and how to post your video in a post.

After I have the tutorial made and posted, everyone should be able to upload videos to youtube and post them in their posts.

I am hoping to be able to imbed videos from my video site here also.

  5. Mike,

DO you now if these are still good for the tournament Sunday?

    Alex

Those numbers are still good. However, they are not the first set of nets. They are 2 nets between these and the piers. These 2 nets run approx 110-130FOW. I do not have the numbers for these nets with me.

There are lots of nets to the South. They range from 60-130FOW. If you head South, make sure your driver keeps their eyes open.

  6. Ive been fishing the Bay now for going on 22 years despite my young age. Im only 26, but have a birthday coming up in November. My Dad started me off out there at the young age of 5. I fell in love with walleye fishing and it quickly became an obsession. Between fishing with my Dad on our boat and hanging out around the "charter dock", (where my Uncle and Dad had their charter), i landed myself a job as mate on Summer Remedy III charters out of Linwood where i worked for 7 years. I also filled in on Beaner II and Marla's Joy Charters if we didnt have a trip and their normal mate wasnt available.....I would have continued my job as mate, but the Capt. hurt his back at DELPHI and had to retire. He retired full disablility and in turn had to give up his charter business because of S.S. disability etc.....My Dad and Uncle gave up the chart biz as well, so most of the time its just Dad and i on our boat. We basically just fish for fun as often as we can and fish a few of the local tournies.....We have a blast, "Eye" fishin's tough to beat.;):D

Any thoughts on becoming a charter captain? You obviously know how to adjust to the conditions, and "catch" fish!

  7. That's what this is all about, linking up and sharing info. Every little bit helps. I know we were only 1 of 2 boats in that depth range that I saw. I heard some people on the radio in sallow water not dowing so hot and marking nothing but our screen was full. I have to tell you all my new lowrance FF is the cats @$$. I saw over 30 fish come up to my cannon balls and I did my best to entice them and after a few lure changes found what they wanted. I forgot to mention in my original post that my trolling speed was slower than normal and we picked the fish off inside turns so they liked it slooow yesterday.

I agree 100%! This is how the weekend anglers can stay on top of the game without having to be on the water 7 days a week. Between watching the weather a couple of days prior to fishing, and reading fishing reports from my area, I have a really good idea on where I will be fishing, and what to use.
