  1. The fishing is still red hot out of Holland.

Took my little brother out this morning for his first trip of the year. Got a late start waiting for a slow crew member. Started setting lines in 90 FOW at around 7:30. Started ran a 6 line spread all day but it might as well have been 4. We were running a 300' #45 copper on one side of the boat and 300' #32 copper on the other side. Also, a wire diver on each side and two riggers. Started hitting fish around 130 FOW and got all the way out to 240 FOW before we had a chance to rest. Ended up 13 for 17, could have got the last two but is started raining pretty hard around 10:30 so decided to call it a day. we had 4 kings over 10lbs with the biggest pushing 18. 2 more medium kings, 2 small kings, 2 coho, and 1 bonus laker. I think we had 4 or 5 doubles and a triple on the day. It was lots of fun all around.

    What worked:

11" White crush glow paddle with fish scale/proctoligist fly 130' on rigger - 1 laker and 2 big kings

Same paddle with glow mirage fly 97' on rigger - 3 big kings

Moonshine Double Trouble 97' on rigger- 2 small kings

Big Lake Lures Blue Kato on 300' #32 Copper - 2 coho

Blue Water Fly Green Crinkle 3 fly Teaser rig with UV SD 220 on wire diver set at 1 - 3 kings

Started with double trouble on the rigger because of the reports of people catching on Moonshines. But, when the big paddle on the rigger started caching big kings and the spoons were only taking small fish we changed over the other rigger to another paddle.

  2. I agree with the others. You already have the tools, might as well go wire. The technique is the same as with braid. You let it out slow, keep your drag set so that it just creeps or ticks.

Braid will be ok with roller rods, just be very carefull to make sure that the braid stays on the rollers. If it gets off the rollers, game over, the frames will cut you off quickly.

Tony's last point is why I wouldn't use braid no roller rods. The rods are designed for wire which is significantly thicker than braid. Most likely, there is room next to the roller for the braid to get caught and then you will lose your gear.

  3. I would not buy two more 10 colors. I only have one 10 color, a 7, 5, and 3 color that I run. Last year I added a 300' copper to the spread, and this spring a 250' copper. I would recommend at least these lengths. They have boated a lot of fish in the short time I've had them. I'm using #45 Blood Run copper.

  4. Went for a last minute trip out of Holland last night with a friend from school, his roommate and his roommate's girlfriend. Set lines in 100 FOW heading SW. Didn't mark much of anything until we got out past 160. Tried a few different directions and speeds but started off 0 for 3. Finally got a good hit on the deep rigger with the big paddle. Ended up being a 15lb king. Never got anything hot going all night. Ended up 6 for 11 with one more good fish we lost on the 10 color when he got into the 5 color.

    What worked:

Big Lake Lures Glo Easter Egg on 3 color - 1 small king

Stinger UV Mixed Veggie on 7 color - 1 throwback king and 1 hit

no name Mag Blue Dolphin on 250 copper - 1 hit

Big Lake Lures Green Kato on Rigger at 85 - 1 small king

11" white crush glow ProTrol with Proctoligist fly - 1 big king and 2 hits

Silver Streak Mag U of M Frog on 10 color - 1 coho and 1 one big hit

Big Lake Lures Mod Blue Veggie on 5 color - 1 coho

The fish seemed to be missing baits alot because three of the fish we boated were not hooked square in the mouth. Also a lesson learned, if you get a small fish but then everything turns off, check your lines. We also had 3 "shakers" that we didn't notice even though two of them were decent sized fish.

  5. What rods do you have? I run 8'6" Blue diamond roller rods on the inside and 10' Okuma Classic rods on the outside. The only thing I would be concerned about running these lengths is if you have different brands and have a lot less back bone on the outside rod.

  6. Thanks for posting the pictures Dave and Jon, my camera didn't save any of the ones I took.

Here pictures of the lures that worked:

    BLL Green Kato UV

    BLL Blue Kato UV

    BLL Mod Blue Veggie UV

    Stinger Green Slush

    DW Glow Bloody Nose

    DW Glow Back Blue Dolphin

    MS Mongolian Beef

    On the sides:

no brand Mag Blue Dolphin - This was the hottest lure on the boat. Notice that the tape is a little different than normal, it must have been enough for the fish because the brand name versions were not getting hit as much.

  7. Nice job guys.

WOW' date=' that a lot of guys from this site getting together to hammer fish.

Cool that we can all have this place to chat, meet and slay salmon.[/quote']

I've always said that the reason I got my current boat is because I wanted to bring people out with me, the time on the water with friends is what makes salmon fishing so great. I was actually a little bit disappointed last year when I didn't get many responses to offers for rides. I love meeting new people and salmon fishing is a way to do it and have a great time.
