  1. Give Give Bill Funk a call at 231 759-7254. He runs/owns Shoreline Tackle in Muskegon and is one of the most knowledgeable people on Cannon riggers in the country. He will be able to tell you what's wrong, how to fix it, and if you can or he needs to. He also knows this is fishing season and turns things around quick.

He's got my vote as well. I've got 2 older mag 20's that he has kept going for me. Just minor stuff. Got new power cables for free last year. The man is a master.

  2. First time I ever went out of gh and as soon as we hit 96 fow we started to drop lines and we only had two lines out when a big, and when I say big, I mean BIG! fish hit like a ton of bricks and when my dad grabbed the rod the fish jerked it out of his hand and we saw the fish tail walking behind the boat with the spoon in his mouth a second after that. So we went 0-1 today... Very bad trip. My worst ever yet, hope it will stay that way... I won't be going back to gh anythime soon. :black20eye:

I'm confused. You hooked the biggest fish of your life, the fish ripped it out of your hands and you are never going back to GH? I'd still be trolling around looking for that fish. You actually quit fishing after that? There are some little stocked trout ponds that may be less stressfull. I would guess it may be tough trolling however.

  3. Finally got the boat fixed up and went out for the first trip of the year. Fished 0700-1300. 40-325 FOW. Caught all fish 190-225 FOW 0930-1030. NW troll at 3.0-3.2 on GPS. Went 4/6. 8lb steelhead 2 core steelie stomper. Lost huge steelhead same rig one beautiful jump and gone. 8lb steelhead full core broken bloody nose. 18lb king same rig. 9lb coho flounder pounder 43 down on rigger. Lost one on slider orange ladderback stinger. Line broke. Absolutely beautiful day to be on the water. Watch out for nets west of channel in 55 and 80 FOW. More nets south of channel reported.

  4. Nets are still off Whitehall. Local bait shop (Johnsons) says they have been abandoned . There are three sets so be careful. Two out near the wreck buoy in 61 and 85 feet northwest of the channel. The other I am told is south of the channel. 6-12-2013

Went out yesterday. Nets are still there. Saw a Coast Guard boat looking at them. I've read that only the tribal police can have them removed. I say remove them and send them the bill since they will not remove these deadly hazards. Whats the worst thing that could happen? They make millions of dollars in their casinos and can't clean up their mess?

  5. 7' Ugly Sticks on my riggers. Only downside is they're 1 piece but have a good parabolic action to them.

7ft ugly stick one piece 1100's awesome fun on a green fish on a DR. Not made anymore. I want a few if anybody has some. 1101's are 2 piece work well but I'd love to pick up some 1100's.

  6. I'm Ken, retired, and fishing is my passion! I fish walleyes, perch, bluegills, whitefish, salmon, plus some stream fishing. I travel around the state to fish and enjoy other areas and making new friends. I have no problem with sharing information.I have a lot more to learn than I have to offer. My boat is a 16 foot Lund which limits my salmon fishing. I look forward to learning from this site.

Welcome! Lots of guys fish salmon out of 16 ft boats. Research this site for info on how to do it.

  7. i would like to see some results of mature chinooks and where they would be. growing tired of hearing that salmon arent managed for any shore opportunities when we all pay the same for the annual fishing license regardless of owning a boat or not.

Really not sure what you mean on how anyone would "manage" salmon to stay close to shore. The last time I checked they roam and eat in deep water moving closer to shore as the season progresses. Then they are on shore and up river to spawn giving "shore opportunities". What is your suggestion for "managing" salmon to change their offshore behavior? If I could place an order with my license purchase; I would go for a cheap spoon on a downrigger 50 down in 100 FOW 75 back. All 20 pounders.

  8. I was out there Sunday Morning and saw them and investigated. They are Indian nets and are located in two sets near the wreck buoy. Four or 5 floats on both sets. Cant touch them by law. I personally want to see the Indian netting stopped but its up to our inept government who bows to everyone but American citizens. To avoid them stay straight west out of the Channel until you hit 85 feet before turning north. Someone is going to get into those in the dark and really have a mess. I'm glad we went straight out at 4:30 Sunday morning. I normally head northwest right out of the channel and fish in front of the twin Dunes. I marked the area out after my investigation and now have to hope they don't move them. These things should have lights on them for running boats at night. Talonz

My exact route out of the channel as well. My boat is not quite ready. Thanks for the heads up.

  9. Nick,

Why the dislike/hate Big Game? Outside of running Hi-seas once i have always used BG. On my walleye gear 12lb as it is the same diameter of10# XT. My salmon stuff is either 20# or 25# depending pn the setup. Been running BG for 20yrs + never a problem. I do keep ALL my line in the freezer for storage.

Thanks for bringing this up. I too have used 20# big game on riggers 30# for leaders on paddles and SD's. 20# for backing on my lead core. Used Big Game for many years. No issues, works great, just replace every year like any other mono. Buy the big spools. Can't beat the price.

  10. I use the cheap ($10.00) big wrap arounds. UV protection, fit over my glasses, and work well. Don,t think anyone makes them anymore, but I know a place that has all kinds of old and new fishing stuff. My fishing budget doesn't have room for designer fishing glasses.

  11. put a warm water take off of my kicker motor for those cold days when my hands hurt from cold weather.Found this from a guy I met in Oregon,he said it was popular there.Simply put a barbed nipple with a zinc on it that can be bought online, run a small hose to a valve then to a sink.(the guy I met had it go in a cooler)Open the valve, fill the 'sink' with warm water, close valve.TA DA

If I new how to post pictures I would.

    Wasn't april fools day yesterday?

  12. That's nice, but it sure would be nice to also include the city boat ramp area too. In reasonably normal water conditions it has been a mini adventure to be able to launch and then get to the main lake channel. Whitehall is a great port to fish out of -- well worth the long run out through White Lake to get to the big lake... but I'm guessing that Great Lakes worthy boats are going to have great difficulty using the ramp this year.

As a consequence, the trailer boats and the associated $$$ are going to find locations that do have water at the ramp and are less challenging to navigate to go fish.

All great points, but I've never seen more than a couple of boats using the city marina. How does the city of Whitehall afford to support a marina with no income? Do you know what they charge for a slip? Gas sales can't support the marina I wouldn't think.

  13. Hey Grizz, always a good question. The newest Fish Hawk probe is probably the best one available, not that badly priced either. I do believe that several of the rigger mfrs. also have their version available. Keep in mind, this tool is the "Best Investment" you can have for fishing on the boat, in my humble opinion. When you "know for sure" what the conditions for speed and temp are where your lures are at, you have a very distinct advantage of targeting and hooking up the fish, no doubt. You'll never regret the decision once you've owned and fished them. Just a reminder, the rigger you use that probe on, make sure your wire is new, or newer, no twists, knots, fraying, or any defects at all. You don't want to lose it because replacement of that unit alone is about $300 now. A lot of guys forget this, then lose it, and get peed off too often.

Thanks for the reminder. Been there. Done that. I've got the Fishhawk. New probe. Old head. Battery lasts all season. New cable on the probe rigger. Works great.

  14. What sell me on this boat is that is a tiara, the seller claims that they handle rough water better than any other boat in its size, thats what i thought too,is that true?,are they better than bayliners, sea ray, slickcraft, grady whites, ect. I know its old but i dont want to have of $$ ivested in this sport so that old stuff is what im looking at. Currently fishing out of an 18ft starcraft holliday with an outboard. So not to picky on an upgrade. Just dont want to spend more than 6-7k

I will be selling my 1979 Tiara 2500 Pursuit this spring. Price will be in your range. It is an awesome fishing boat.
