  1. Scum line is called that because it is where all the scum collects on a temp break. You will see floating trash this causes lots of bugs and stuff to collect. Steel head will eat bugs all day long so they tend to hang around scum lines. Sometimes on the cold side sometimes on the warm side. Temp breaks are just that changes in water temp at the surface. Terry Dirty Dog can probably remember better then me but fishing with Don and him on the Tangled Mess a couple years ago we hit the biggest temp break any of have seen in memory. We only pulled a couple fish off it because we were about done for the day it was around a 15 deg temp break and looked like a step in the water. If I find a good temp break I will follow it til I limit out usually not taking very long to do so. Most days this time of year if I am not already dialed in I will spend as much time looking for my spot or sometimes more than it takes to limit out when I find it. Last year we took a 4 man limit of Steelhead plus 3 bonus kings in just over a hour of fishing. I just drive west til I see my water and stop to check and temp breaks I see when running out.

Thanks for your post. I have posted in years past about my October program with no response. Awesome fishing offshore in October. Many limits. I have given up posting reports on this great opportunity. Will be out the 3rd week of October weather permitting. Good luck to you.

  2. Personally I'd like to sink every sailboat I come across. Snapped an aluminum prop blade due to a sailboat on Spring Lake a couple years ago. The "captain" cut me off right when I was starting to get up on plane, had no room to turn and had to slam it in reverse to avoid running them over. I'm, (correction; HE'S) lucky I didn't tear up my outdrive. I called him everything but a white man.

I have seen poor piloting by every kind of craft out there. Had some bad experiences with sailboats as well. If you have never done it , sailing can be a lot of fun. I used to fish out of Muskegon years ago and there was a guy with about a 30 footer that trolled with 4 downriggers and boards. With the right wind he trolled for free. He motor trolled as well. Please don't knock all sailboaters.

  3. Hmm, 18" super super mag spoon? Where do I get one? Thanks. Thunderduck? Would you please explain?

Remember when you used to put a penny on a train track and it got all flattened out? Well, here's the secret and only you can read it. Everyone else has to log out now. Place a mag Flounder Pounder on the train track and presto! An 18" super super mag spoon. Your welcome.

  4. Just asking for anwers' date=' but I guess you answered in your own way, which kinda proves what most people have been saying.

    Nice photoshop job.[/quote']

Jeeze guys. Just kiddin around. I never posted that fish. Hey Just Hookin did you even notice the post of the fish was not me? I thought you were were kiddin too. Sorry . The whole thing is a fake for sure. Thats the only answer I have for you.

  5. Tom' date=' perhaps you can help explain a few of the items brought up here like

    1. where is your left hand, and

    2. what the heck is in that fishes mouth?[/quote']

    1. None of your biz where my left hand is.

    2. 18 inch super super mag spoon.

    3. Starting a guide service since I know where those 42 lbers live.

  6. October/November fishing has been the best fishing ever for me over the years. What can be challenging is that 8-12 lb kings bite 90 down in 200 FOW with a slowwwww presentation. The Steelhead want a fast speed in the top 20 FOW. Cold water; very tasty fish. I am usually the only boat out there. Steels tend to be in 300+ FOW. If the weather is nice it can be the best trip you ever had.

  7. Alright, so I've come across something interesting. I took my boss and his sons out fishing last Friday evening, went 2 for 4. One 2 lb king and one 20 lb king. Both were clean, silver, fresh fish. My boss said today that he grilled them Saturday for lunch. He said the big one turned to a grayish/white color after a few minutes on the grill and tasted TERRIBLE! The small one turned out great. Both cooked the same way, the meat was very pink when I filleted them the night before. Any one ever had this happen or hear anything similar to this? He was really bummed, it was his first big lake fish and was bummed it turned out terrible.

Have you updated your resume? Bad idea giving your boss a 20lb sheepshead.

  8. This time of the year it's getting hard to run boards due to the amount of boat traffic, especially when the fish are right outside the pier heads. Fish outside of the pack or on a slower day (weekday) and you don't have any problems. You also need to take slower turns, so don't let the new guy drive the boat! ;)

I set my boards up so they don't release when a fish hits. I do this by running the line behind the pinch pad once, and through the pinch pad once as well. When fishing in some bigger waves like I did on this day, I went through the pinch pad twice to keep the line from pulling out.

Copper or lead on boards has done very well for me. :thumb: Armstrongs is a place everyone should visit at least once. While they do have everything and then some, it is also the source of many jokes.

Armstrongs has the best selection of stuff you have ever seen. Stuff is piled up and hard to find sometimes. Ask Don for help. He knows where everything is. No joke!

  9. Thinking about putting a auto pilot on my wish list for the winter. I have a older Crestliner Sabre with a 4.3 mercruiser with power steering that is a real b**** to drive, leaving the wheel for a few seconds to net a fish and the boat wants to start doing circles. So anyway looking for suggestions on manufacturers and models that some of you have had experiences with. Cost, difficulty of installation or place around Grand Rapids they had do the install.

    Thanks

    Mike

Whether or not you have hydraulic steering will limit your choices.
