  1. 3rd trip out on new boat, 27 amberjack and is working out well. Name change to WASABI. Introduced some pennsylvania buddies to salmon fishing last night. Fogbank at the pierhead, Flat dead calm water and flies to start, but the fog cleared out when we set down in 100 FOW. 2.5 mph at ball worked best. Worked out to 160 and made turn back. 150 copper took a rip at 135, nobody home. Then full core went with a cookie cutter king at 125fow. Turned north and picked up a beautiful 13# metalhead on a bloodynose 3 color core. Wrapped up the night at dusk with a 15# king on the 150 copper in 75 fow with a mongolian beef.

  2. Well, managed to pick up another 9 today with a semi-rookie first mate today. Windy n wavy, then foggy. Had fun regardless. Thin fins most productive again today in red and also green firetiger on boards, 2 color and old reliable orange split j11 on rigger 12' down. Bounced between 30 fow and 15 fow, 17 fow best. Small straight black rapala caught 3 on a 3 color too.

  3. Great plans, great weather, lousy fishin, humble pie served as JUNE fishin holds true.

3:37 am, one of the crew bails out, decide to go anyway, 1 hr later than planned as I wait for the first mate to get out of bed. Pretty sunrise from the park n ride. Turns out BK now has donut holes...

Launch boat and there is another whaler launching next to us, but their boat wont start so we offer Rick n Dennis from Holland to go with us as we were short a pair of hands anyway. Seemed like nice guyz that appeared appreciative for the impulsive invite. Sucks to launch a boat and then NOT go. Didnt guarantee a fish but felt optimistic.

End result, 1 dink ho from a 300' copper on happy meal mag in 83 fow.

Pull lines at 11:00 discouraged, but still smiling, because I got to go fishing instead of yardwork.

A simple Thank you and goodbye would have been nice, albeit expected. Hell if I was in their tennis shoes, my M.O. is to offer to chip in a little $ for gas expenses...freaky deaky dutch...

So we dock and I head to get the trailer, these guys decide to duck out without saying goodbye let alone Thank you or a small token of appreciation. Those old guyz should know that a little courtesy and ettiquette go a long way and karma will catch up to you. Guess I'm old school and was raised differently.

Glad to say I leave Friday on a float plane for the canadian bush to get unplugged with my son and great comrades for 1 week of walleye. see u in July at the launch.

  4. Got the Just Hook'n crew out on the rough diamond. Went south on a mission to get the skunk Out 🎣and Redamaks In🍔🍻.

First at the ramp in the dark to beat the windstorm. Managed to make it thru the SKINNY water by the condo docks near the ramp (1-2 fow by docks, +1 in the docks 😱, 4-6 fow or deeper in center of channel, but still spotty. That little bridge has never looked so tall from the water and I have launched here since the 80's. BTW, at the mouth of the harbor, the dredge gods should put up a shallow water hazard buoy too, stay lakeside at the inlet, 3 fow at inlet on shoreside!

Picked up 3, including a shaker ho, stayed in 12-17 fow trolling towards mc. Clown, and a chartreuese firetiger split husky jerks on boards picked up a pretty little metalhead and a shaker, carmel dolphin spoon on corner rigger found a tasty brown too 👍. Ventured out to 40 fow north of channel too, fish on graph but no takers. Wind was gettin fierce, so came in b4 11. No glory at Redamaks - opens at noon 😡. Went to Clementines in St Joe on way home 👍. Missed the brown blast, maybe next year. GET OUT THERE!

  5. Love the 007 concept, but miss the old school days of flat lines and riggers with a dipsy out.

For that kind of money and with the technological capabilities, the smart troll devices should have a small co2 cartridge with remote 'detonation' that will fill a life jacket and make the probe and attached paddle n fly n dipsy, come to the surface with epirb lojac. Patent pending...

  6. $21MM in emergency dredging funds (grants) are being released for dredging this year. I am more worried about dodging the dredge pipes than hittin bottom. Gonna b A LOT of dredging this year. Shipping ports will get priority but all the west michigan ports seemed to make the list. Go to www.michigan.gov/deq to read about it.

The rough diamond came out of storage today, hope to get out soon and report.

  7. Fish hawk probe, cannonball n release. Downrigger rod snapped, probably 15 colors of lead, 2-3 dipsies on old 500 feet of wire. Couple paddles n flies with da wire dipsies. couple spoons too. All since replaced.

Also recovered and returned a tx45 planar board on a 450 copper - put ur name and number on ur boards- people like me will return them to the rightful owner. Also found and returned a red 22ft aluminum boat with three souls on board 14.6 miles from shore drifting to milwaukee on 3/26/12 and a 21 foot open bow with three souls on board 6 miles from port with a summer storm approaching. :)

  8. Took three newbies out to experience lake michigan trolling. Noaa called for 1 foot or less, Wind at the ramp was howling offshore at 630, went anyways. Noaa is like freddy mac in toby keiths red solo cup: can kiss my @$$.

Speaking of red, the three kids and my buddy on board were all threatened by 'colorful' radio chatter from a loosely termed 'captain' from a red cuddy cabin that clearly had no idea how to drive a boat or any navigational rules. Thanks to the capt at yacht basin who was helpful on the amusing banter, beats scrubbing the deck.

Despite the verbal threats, near miss driveby and waves over the bow on an east troll, we still had fun for probably the last trip of the season for us, hockey time starting manana and hunting too.

What worked: trolled 50-135 FOW east/west troll, cold water was 56f at 60 fow, 47f at 65 down, fish hit at 75 fow.

Green/white paddle with glow back and pickled sunshine fly 65 down on rigger

9 color lead core with pearl glow j plug

270 copper with chrome n green 8" spinnie.

    Kings are brown already,

Been a great season and maintained composure all season.

freezer is full, boat is in peak condition, ready for a deep clean.

Pulled in several fish with good fishin buddies and introduced more to the life on the big pond.

Also pulled in two grateful boats this year and didnt need to use my US Boat tow insurance on myself. All Rewarding experiences, pay it forward, all of the above is priceless!
