  1. I take it there aren't many "tackle stores" in Sweden? Or is it that you're looking for stuff they don't carry? Just curious what its like over there. Very interested to see/read more about your fishing culture and styles. Very interesting.

Our fishing styles are pretty much the same as yours, Scandinavian salmon trollers have since day one picked up techniques and gear used on the great lakes. The later years we have started developing our own spoons (Ismo among others), Flashers (VK and Salsa among others) and boat gear. It must have been back in the early seventies the first NK spoon was sold in Sweden, NK mag has produced very well. The later years we are also starting to see some DW and Silver Streaks in specialized trolling stores.

We do have two great inland lakes, Lake Vanern and Lake Vattern, containing big fresh water salmon and trout. You can use whatever technique you want at this lakes but are limited to ten rods. Bag limit of 6 salmons/trouts a day and all fish below 60cm have to go back, All fish with a intact Adipose fin must be returned.(you are only allowed to keep fish with a cut off fin).

I few years ago i moved to the coast of the Baltic sea, this is where i fish at the moment. On the baltic sea we have no rod limits, which means that on nice days with calm weather we can troll up to 16-18 rods, still it can take several days of fishing without a fish.

Hehe no tacklestores in Sweden, only Volvo and Saab stores.

Yes you are right, i am looking for products they don´t carry, every fisherman keeps their spoons in Plano 3700 compartment boxes, after 3-4 fishingtrips they have rusty hooks.... And it is always a tangled mess trying to pick up one spoon.

I found this one on e-bay, and the seller would ship to Sweden(shipping50$)

But i found another Special mate box on another sale site, a box containing 130 Silver streaks in pristine condition(seems unused). I will fix the payment tonight.

  3. On a side note and speaking of Cannon riggers and plastic, my very first riggers were brand new Cannon manuel Uni-trolls and I had nothing but problems with the plastic parts on them. Duel boom mount rod holders broke once, boom tip broke twice, even had the plastic housing break once right were the boom connects to the housing and dang near lost 2 poles, split right in half. Most of these issues was in early spring when temps were cold. Sold those and went with Big John's.

    Goood morning USA!

The problem you explain here Bluedevil is what made me switch to Scotty electric downrigger.

I must have had ten cannons and experienced problems on all of them.

Problems with the boom, main reel on almost all of them cracked.

The swivel base where the release pin runs into the base cracked.

So far i´ve had 16 electric Scotty downriggers and have never had any problems at all, not even the smalles little issue have i had.

  4. I am jealous!

    What is your personal best?

My personal best is around 30-35lb.

I have been fishing the big Swedish lakes most of my trolling time.

I move to the Baltic shore 5 yrs ago and have been without boat three of these years, but i am eager to increase my PB alot this season.

I will keep you updated :-)

  5. Here is a few more.

I did some research and found that the biggest salmon caught on rod weighed 88lb.(fish caught back in -35)

And that the biggest one caught in net weighed 103lb.........

Here is some of the biggest caught during "modern time"

    64lb, 131cm long.

    29kg131cm.jpg

    58.9lb

  6. Hello!

Just want to show you all what the Baltic sea has to offer.

I am not the one in any of these pictures, it is just to let you see some of the monsters we have here, and these ones is not the biggest ones.

The first one is a 50.15lb Atlantic salmon.

    2275.jpg

And this one is a 41.2lb Atlantic salmon.

    18kg.jpg

(the salmon next to the big one is about to be used a cut bait :lol:)

I think the biggest salmon caught on fishing rods in the Baltic sea is around 60lb.

Thats like dragging a mad pig behind the boat lol.

I have a Maxi Mate and like it but to be honest none of my go to spoons are in it and it is stored below decks and a pain to get at. It is packed full of spoons that I seldom run once in a while someone will be on the radio bragging of how well they are doing with a certain spoon and I will dig it out and try that spoon. I keep my 30 or so favorite spoons in small clear plastic box's easy to access and can see what is in them at a glance. I made my first Maxi box out of a small old suitcase with lexan dividers what I did was installed 2 grooved boards in the suitcase and cut 0.125" thick lexan dividers to slide into the slots or grooves in the boards and I put foam in the lid to hold themin place when closed. It worked well and held a lot of spoons in a small package but being a cheap suitcase it did not take water well and rotted years ago. But if I was going to do it again I would get a better case and do it in a min. With the cost of shipping being so high I would consider making one.

    Hi 1 Maniac.

Thanks alot for the tip, i will see what i have and what can be used.

It seems like i might have found a used Special mate with spoons, i´ll keep you all updated.

  8. Very nice rig, and nice job on resetting it up.

I do have a question for ya,

I dont see many rod holder on the side. Do you guys over there use many boards and lead core or copper, or many diver rigs.

I love the radar arch i was thinking of adding one, that could give me a place for three more holders.

    Hello and thx Line Dancin.

Yes we use both big planer boards and inline boards, with the big boards we are able to spread the lures more than 200ft on each side of the boat, we use divers and sinkers on the planer spoons.

We also use three downrigger with up to three rods on each downrigger.

i do have eight flush mounted rod holders, two of them are being used as downrigger mounts. Even when trolling dipsys we use either the down rigger rod holders or the flush mounted ones for the DD rods.

I have not seen the adjustable type rod holders that you use for the DD rods, but i understand the thought of getting the rod tip closer to the surface. The higher above the surface the tip is, the more line you have to add to get down to the same depth as a rod with tip close to surface.

Glad you like the radar arch, it was me and a buddy who made and welding it together.

  9. Sounds like 7 strand 30lb test wire. It's a great way to get the Dipsy's deeper with less drag. Once you fight a fish with wire, you will never use mono again.

Here is a link with some wire info:http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12232&highlight=wire

Very interesting thread, i know i can google for it but, whats the cost of this wire? how often does it need to be replaced.

I think three of the reels came with wire and the other nine reels came with braided, maybe i shoul do a test trip with the braided and the wire.

the only prob is that my rods probably can´t handle the wire, i am using Daiwa interflow rods.

  10. We used dipsys and downriggers, lead core is not for sale here so i have never tried it, will it be able to get the baits ddeep down there?

My target depths depends on loads of different factors, like time of the day, weather, where the bait is and also which time of the year. But mostly we fish at depths from 30´till 150´, 90% of the time between 60´and 100.

We run the dipsys straight off the mono line, 20lb big game inshore bought bulk at Cabelas, and behind the bait/spoon and the dipsy 0.60mm (maybe 65lb?) line.

I just recieved some used Daiwa reels i bought in Ohio. These reels came with something that looks like thin downrigger wire, is this something you normally use? it didnt have changing colors like i read that the lead core has.

    Also something new to me.

  11. I could only find one S/M box on E-Bay. It's $46.99. Doesn't appear as if he ships to Sweden though. Sense I know the seller, I could see if he would make an exception. Just let me know if you want to pursue it.

    Cool, nice.

I Emailed the seller earlier today so we wait and see if he replies. Seller or store named Harald and some numbers if im right, harald is a Norwegian name so maybe we are from the same place lol, I am a Norwegian living in Sweden.

There was also one Maxi mate at E-bay, that seller have got an shipping quote aswell.

  12. Hello!

Could you please type down a few lines about your favourite spoon and the best working speed for this spoon.

Here in Sweden we mostly use Mag and and standard sized spoons so feedback and reviews for Mag and standard sized spoons is what i would like to read.

Northern King seems to be Scandinavians favourite spoon (alot because we don´t have any other brands), the mag sized is being trolled between 2.2 to 2.9 knots. some with flashers but also many without flashers.

Now let me hear how you do it, this will help me finding new spoons that will work together with the brands i already use.

  13. this is what mine looks like after adding some of my KN spoons, lol talking about being stuffed, 450 Mag and standard sized spoons.
