  1. does anyone have any experience with these. I'd like to hear what you think of them before I spend all that $$$ I can see how it would be useful for bass walleye and others how about for trolling can it keep up?
  2. Of the two I think I prefer the depth raider over the sub-troll. It seems like the digital readout should lead to a more precise speed. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing though. I would say though that the Cannon seems to be the most appealing to me because of the added depth guage and connecting it to the standard cable. It worries me though that they don't seem to be very popular. It would seem that the sub troll and depth raider are very popular
  3. shot a nice 5pt that we thought was a managment buck but it turned out to be a year and a half old buck. oh well just have to be more careful next year.
  4. Do both the depth raider and sub troll use a coated cable? If so is this cable run along side of the down rigger wire or instead of the down rigger wire?
  5. I have decided this is the next purchase for my boat. I run where there is a lot of current and mixed wave patterns so I think it would be a wise investment. I reread the previous discussions about these but I have more questions. I get the feeling the Fishhawk is the go to speed n temp but I think I would rather go with the cannon. The cannon is not only cheaper by at least $100 but it also has depth. Some of my questions are is the depth accurate? I know the cannon hooks to the downrigger cable, how effective and maintenance free is this connection. Can you use normal downrigger cable? I have heard that some people with the fishhawk have had a difficult time finding the signal deeper than sixty feet due to blowback moving the probe out of the signal cone. Does anyone have any experience with this? I guess I'm also interested in hearing more about the sub troll and depth raider. These seem less expensive. Do these products follow the get what you pay for addage? Also is there an advantage to the fish hawk 920 over the 840? I appreciate any additional input. Hope everyone had a happy holiday.
  6. I have been using the graphical marine forecast off of the NOAA sight to check it. Every little bit helps.
  7. Wow that's an awesome 8 Bill did you have it scored?
  8. Orange Angel Mixed Veggie Blue Bubble
  9. How many of you use a squid behind a flasher. I have not run these very often and had zero luck with them. I have heard of some people doing well though. What kind and colors seem to work? do you run them same set up as flasher fly?
  10. Got out sunday morning around quarter to seven. Went 4-5 Seemed like a perfect morning. two of the smaller fish were silver the two 10 lbers were just losing their silver. The meat was still pink.
  11. I've walked the bridge several times it's always an experience I had heard it was really crazy this year. Should have brought your boat you could have ferried people across on a slow troll picked up some fish and made some cash
  12. What's been the hot set up this year? In the straits I have done the best with a siggs rigs green holo 8" echip combo with green hypnotist fly on a lime green #1 dipsy set on 3 and run 120-140 ft back. Most productive spoon has been magnum stinger orange angel.
  13. yeah that would be the worst. Great Point! a fish to put you in the money and you can see it I would probably have to replace the guides on my rod after that one.
  14. We have had a very high hook up ratio this year I can only think of 3 or four trips without a fish (some have been lost due to my own stupidty) but they rarely come off. I have noticed that one guy I fish with seems to lose more than I do. I'm not sure why. I know I don't really set the hook when I grab the rod I just reel and slowly lift until I feel it pull back than I keep the rod tip up and reel when I can. When they're peeling line or when I can't take any without the drag slipping I just hold em. I feel I get more line twist when I'm reeling and the drag is slipping. sometimes I'll tighten the drag after the first run or two.
  15. What's worse getting skunked or losing a big one. We were pre fishing for a tournament and something hit our most productive dipsy. I had not seen a rod slam like that or the reel peel line that quickly before. it either went well over 15 or was tail hooked. My friend fought him for about 2 minutes and then slack line. He reeled up nothing but the dipsy. I recalled that I had noticed a knot in the leader earlier and was going to replace it that night Stupid stupid stupid. not only did we lose a big fish but we also lost what was our most productive set up with no replacement. It was a siggs rigs green holo combo.
  16. Went out of frankfort for the first time on a friends boat. went 2-3 with two 8 pounders. Both hit off of dipsies in about 35-50 fow. White crush e-chip with an aqua gold krw fly. and a siggs rigs green hypnotist combo. It's a beautiful place but we couldn't quiet find the big feeding school. A lot of guys were coming in with coolers full of 12-15 pounders.
  17. I have a pair of big jon capn' paks. I see they sell covers for them. Is this mostly aesthetic or is there a legitimate reason to cover them. I keep my boat on a trailer and usually only trailer it about 5 mi. With the exception of a few longer trips. It is stored inside all winter.
  18. So nailer I guess what I'm getting at is if you tie your fly directly to the swivel on the flasher what do you do if you want to change flies. It would seem that if you cut it loose to tie another one your leaders would keep getting shorter.
  19. I know there has been a lot of talk about leader lengths and such but in my quest to get more production from my flies I have a few basic questions. #1 Do most of you put a snap swivel on your flies. If so barrel or bearing? If not how do you attatch them to the flasher. #2 I understand the heavy test line giving the fly better action but what kind of knot do you find most effective for that? Palomar?? #3 How many of you have seen a difference replacing the 50# mono with similar lb flourocarbon?
  20. I've been using cabela's 17# flourocarbon for tying my leaders. I am out and need to buy some new line. I've had some mixed results with the Cabela's. I was wondering what type of line you all use and what lb test for your leaders.
  21. Thanks for the great info. I'm planning on going monday night so I was hoping the boat traffic might be a little less.
  22. Yeah that's the bridge in the background. Thanks for adding the pic. It's a great place to fish. The action may not always be hot and heavy but it's hard to beat the scenery.
  23. South wind blowing all day. Got out at 6 didn't mark any fish in front of the Grand hotel on the island. Trolled in front of the coast guard dock. No action until 9:30 until we hit a double on a blue spin with an aqua glow fly and on a bloddy nose spoon. Both in the 8 lb. range.
  24. I plan on making my first ever trip to Frankfort next week. I checked "the tackle box" site but I thought I"d fish for some more detail. Is there a preferred trolling direction? I've looked at the charts and it looks like there are some nice contours both straight out and north and south. Any preferences. It looks really interesting around north of point betsie is that a very long run? We'll be going out in the evening and I'm hoping to finally break a one person limit..
