By the time the facility closed almost 50 years later, it had produced 155 million baby fish and served as a model for hatcheries across Canada and in other countries. It’s the second such funding request made by Ottawa County (MI) Parks and Recreation in its effort to buy the 353-acre sand mining property bordering a section of the Grand River channel near Grand Haven known as “the Sag.” A past-deadline request for $4.2 million received the blessing of Michigan’s Natural Resources Trust Fund Board late in 2017. The average Lake Ontario outflow during the month of February was the highest in recorded history, according to the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board. The main purpose of our proposed sanctuary is to preserve, promote, educate about and learn more about the historic artifacts submerged in the lake waters off the counties of Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Ozaukee: 39 known shipwrecks and 122 reported vessel losses (discoveries yet to be made) … artifacts that Gov. Kaptur took office in January 1983 as the representative of Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, which includes a good part of the coastline of Lake Erie, including Toledo.
