  1. On Thursday April 10th at 7pm the Lake Ontario Trout &

Salmon Association (LOTSA) will be sponsoring their

first fishing seminar of the year. This seminar will

be given by Captain Marlowe Beis on Spoon Fishing

Advanced Techniques. Captain Marlowe is a very

experienced Captain with over 25 years experience

fishing for Salmonids on Lake Ontario. His

presentation will focus on tuning your spoon program

to be most effective in the clear waters and currents

of the Western Basin of Lake Ontario.

LOTSA is a group of mainly weekend recreational

fishermen who are dedicated to the enhancement of the

Lake Ontario Sport-Fishery including the pen rearing

project at Olcott. Each meeting also features a

sharing of information the current fishing conditions.

So come join us and become more successful at fishing

    Lake Ontario!

The seminar will be held at the Cornell Cooperative

Extension, 4487 Lake Avenue (Route 78 two miles north

of Lockport), Lockport, NY 14094. The seminar is open

to the public with a $5 charge for non-members. Call

    636-0519 with any questions.

  2. Happy Easter everyone.:)

I know this may not be politically correct, and if anyone takes offense, my apologies in advance. The word Easter of course is derived from the word East. The Sun rises in the East. The Son also rises, according to Christian beliefs. The two different words sound the same in the English language. I'm not quite sure if that was intentional or not.:)

    Happy Easter Frank

Not entirely, actually it's mostly pagan in nature

    http://www.angelfire.com/ca6/sunnysweb/ostar.html

The other trivia you posted above isn't really accurate either. The formula for determining the date of easter is allso chock full of pagan symbolism, The first sunday after the first FULL MOON after the SPRING EQUINOX. That is all pure paganism right there.

Back 700-900 years ago, when the Christian Missionaries were sweeping their jihad across Europe, they decided it wouild be easier to convert the local heathens if they adopted the already existing religious festivals/holidays and used them for the Christian holidays. The date of Christmas is the same, back then, the Winter Solstice was Dec 25 (it's slowly moving forward as the centuries progress) so they hijacked that Pagan festival and made it the day Jesus was born.

My apologies if this actual history lesson offends anybody.

  3. Well, Frank,

I run both wire and power pro and year in and year out, the wire smokes the power pro for action. For whatever reason, it just gets whacked a whole lot more. I haven't found it to be any tougher on rods than any other presentation. I've got 2 Daiwa heartland diver rods with twilli tips that are 6 years ol and they are still like new.

I've only had 1 tangle with a wire diver, ever, and that was a 400' copper that a king on a wire diver got into, lost the fish, but didn't lose any rigs or tackle.

  4. With the mild winter so far it looks like an early spring start on Lake Ontario. We have filled all of the tables and now have a waiting list. The hard work is completed and now all that is left to be successful is for people to attend. The admission is a $5 donation at the door with 100% given to the four pen rearing projects in Niagara and Orleans Counties. So come the Exp on Sunday 2/24 to get the new and used tackle you “need†at “show†prices, learn from some best Captains through their seminars, speak with some of the 26 Captains along with many manufacturers and most importantly show up to support the Fishery and Pen Rearing. Food will be available throughout the day, free door prizes from NK, A-TOM-MIK, Dreamweaver, Slide Diver, Yeck and Walker will be drawn hourly and parking is free. A list of the Seminars, Captains, Manufacturers, Table Layouts and driving directions are available at www.lotsa.org

  5. This use to be my number one to way back when my dad and mom was into this fishing. I didn't know that they stoped making these very nice boats. I use to like them because of all the room in the back and the nice hard top.

Thompson went out of business back in 1997.

the good news is that in Dec of 2005, Yar Craft (a Thompson spin off company) purchased the name rights and molds for the Thompson boats and eventually have plans on reintroducing the 240 fisherman as the "Thompson 240 Fisherman by Yar-Craft"

I have a 24' Thompson myself, a 1986 Model 252 Hardtop and it is a great boat. but if I could get any boat out there, it would be a Tiara Open (2700, 2900, 3100)

  6. Here's mine; 2005 2500 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Diesel 4X4 doesn't even feel the 8500 lb boat and trailer tagging along behind. 13-14 towing, 18 or so not towing.

    288305-ram.JPG

This is my 4th Dodge Ram in a row, no reason to change. My boss always gets Chevys, and quite honestly, I just HATE how Chevy's drive. His 2004 2500 Duramax just spent 2 weeks in the shop getting the injectors replaced, apparently that's an ongoing problem with the duramax diesel. I'll take my Cummins powered Dodge anyday, Thank you.

  7. Tim, Al, Are the Salmon in lake Ontario realy as BIG as what I read? If so I may grab the boys and look you up some day!

Eric, thats a sweet boat you have there. (I'm assuming it's you in the avatar).

To the rest of you thanks, and let spring be near.

    nailer,

As Billy mentioned above, yes they are:

    here's a 6 fish (2 man limit) of kings Dad and I took out of Olcott on Aug 13, 2006, they are 18, 21, 24.5, 27, 28 and 30 lbs

  8. Kickoff the Lake Ontario fishing season by spending Sunday February 28th learning from some of the best Captains on the lake. Formal presentations will be given by Bob Stevens (Sunrise Charters) on Spring Shoreline Brown Trout, Captain Vince Pierleoni (Thrillseeker) on Western Basin Spring Kings, Ernie Lantiegne (Fish Doctor) on Derby Winning Techniques and Frank Campbell (Niagara Region Charters) on Niagara River Steelhead. In addition, over 25 Charter Captains will be available in the Expo area to talk fishing and answer your questions. It’s also a great opportunity to get ready for the season by upgrading your Tackle and Equipment by shopping in the Expo so that you’re ready to go when the weather breaks in the Spring. See WWW.LOTSA.ORG for all of the details.

  9. I've got a cheapie CVA Staghorn .50 cal, $179 at Cabelas with a Scope. Consistent 1.5" groups at 100 yds with the 295 gr powerbelts and 2 50 gr pyrodex pellets. Nice and simple, never seen the need to get anything else.

See here for more information: http://www.lotsa.org/2008%20EXPO.htm

  11. Yup, I've been using that connection for 2 seasons now, works slicker than snot on a doorknob.

After putting up with the Fish Hawk jumping all over the place and eating probe batteries for 8 years, I can't express strongly enough what a pleasure using the Depth Raider is in comparison.

    Tim

ps, I've been on a number of boats with the Moor subtroll as well and that is equally as nice a unit. It all comes down to preference on an analog or digital display. you really can't go wrong with either of them.

  12. BUFFALO NEWS ARTICLE

    SYRACUSE PAPER ARTICLE http://www.syracuse.com/poststandard/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/11935621193040.xml&coll=1

EMERGENCY, Guys, this is serious. Time is running out for this egg taking season. The State needs to GET SOME PRESSURE TO ""IMMEDIATELY"" TAKE WHATEVER ACTION POSSIBLE TO COLLECT AS MANY EGGS AS POSSIBLE IN THE SHORT PERIOD THAT IS LEFT TO DO SO. They are well under 50% of the way to their goal for eggs and fast running out of time. As it has been explained to us at LOTSA , the Salmon River, as the brood stock stream, will get 100% of its stocking allotment REGARDLESS, with all the rest of the stocking sites receiving their pro-rated proportions of what little is left (if there is any). (read: not very many fish to be stocked anywhere but the salmon river next spring).

As indicated above in the Buffalo News article, the DEC along with volunteers collected eggs both by electroshocking 18 Mile Creek and requesting eggs and milt from fishermen a Fisherman’s Park on Friday and Saturday. Well, we EQUALED THE BEST DAY THEY HAD AT THE HATCHERY THIS YEAR ON FRIDAY AT 18 MILE AND THE QUALITY OF THE EGGS WERE EXCELLENT.

EVERYONE PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES TO PRESSURE THEM TO AUTHORIZE AND ENACT WHATEVER MEASURES ARE NECESSARY (MORE ELECTROSHOCKING AT TRIBS SUCH AS 18 MILE OAK ORCHARD, GENESEE RIVER ETC.) for as long as necessary TO ENSURE THE DEC GETS THE 3+ MILLION EGGS IT NEEDS TO FULFILL OUR CHINOOK SALMON STOCKING NEEDS FOR NEXT YEAR.

In real terms, what this means is there will be NO PEN PROJECTS anywhere on the lake next spring and what few fish are remaining after the Salmon River stocks are fulfilled, will be spread out across all the other stocking sites around the Lake. That could be 5000 fish per site, it could be 1000 fish per site, it could be no fish at any other stocking site if all of the fish raised are needed to fulfill the Salmon River’s needs to ensure sufficient returns to the hatchery.

There is still a small window to get this done before the salmon run is completely over for the year, but we need to act fast, every day this action is delayed is one less opportunity to take the needed eggs from other sites.

    Thanks,

    Tim Bromund

  14. I've got big jon's on mine, 1 heavy duty single and a set of doubles on each gunwale. they are rock solid.

A friend had vector doubles on his last boat and while they were similar to the big jon doubles, I didn't like them nearly as much as my big jons.
