  1. do you have the yellow wire powered on the other boat? i would first try to match up the wiring to what you know works on the other boat. if the LED lights are powered from the same fuse block you may have a ground issue going into the fuse block. most LED lights have very little draw and if they aren't getting enough there is no way your sonar is.

could wire direct to battery for testing purposes. someone with a lowrance setup will know more about the dual power question.

  2. your problem sounds like a week ground to me, but I'm not an expert

Ive rewired all three of the boats I have owned, here is what I have found works best.

I like the blue sea systems fuse blocks, mount one in the back, if needed one in front. the auto style blade fuses are easy to find and having them all in one place is nice for troubleshooting

power and ground to stern fuse block is big gauge, I'm running canon mag 20 downriggers which have a 30 amp fuse each so I have 4 gauge running from my battery switch to the fuse block. if you don't have a battery switch it can be ran directly to the battery.

those fuse blocks can handle 120 amp total draw, so you would be able to run your spreaders from it as well, check the current draw rating on them and run appropriate gauge wire from there. I have 10 gauge to mine, but that's actually a little overkill as mine are a low draw LED style.

I have another of the fuse blocks ran up front with 8 gauge and run my gps, vhf, 12v plug, and auto pilot from that one. still have a dedicated line directly to battery for the sonar, and can isolate that battery with the switch for when I'm looking for max clarity on the sonar (only really worry about that when looking for perch on the bottom or in very deep water)

  3. looked up an online manual for the vhf that's in my boat (uniden oceanus dsc) and found that it does have the ability to relay gps coordinates. I found the wiring diagram and that all makes sense, what I don't know how to do it set it up. do I need to register with the FCC? if so how much does it cost? anything else special I have to do?

  4. great forecast change since yesterday when they were forecasting 2-4's

  5. still struggling to make a decision on adding a kicker to my GLS 220 (basically same as 22' islander) it's 24 years old now and starting to get concerned about the main pooping out on me while out on the water (although it seems to be running great)

I'm pretty short and I'm not sure I could reach a tiller controlled motor on an adjustable mount when it's in the down position, just looking for 1st hand experience if there's any out there.

  6. not sure if this is what your looking for but this is the print I made up for the P70R controller. the Wheel pilot itself doesn't take up much room, a 6" rectangle centered on the steering shaft would give you plenty of clearance. If you need a print of the drive let me know and I should be able to whip one up, Raymarine has cad files of a lot of there products online.

  7. got it stuck in my head yesterday that I should have a kicker motor on the boat, more of a safety thing than anything. I am also realizing I have no idea what to look for in 1. It is for my 22' sea nymph great lakes special, thinking somewhere between 7-10 hp. What length shaft do I need? any mounts that are better than others? thinking I'll try to find an older 4 stroker so I don't need another tank, found 1 with a 6amp charger, is that enough to keep things going? I have dual batteries on the boat and could upsize them some to help with onboard power.

  8. Boat needs new battery's, 7 years old now. It runs twin dual purpose size 24 now, questions for the experts.

Is it worth paying a little extra for deep cycle.

Do you isolate your sonar from the main battery?

Do you run 1 starting and 1 dual or just 2 duals?

    Thanks

  9. I was told My Lowrance cannot talk to my SPX-5 because the network protocol is different like wiring a Mac to a Windows same connections different language. If the 2 units will talk you need the network adapter and terminators to wire them up. However like said above you can wire the NEMA output to as many devices as you want. One talks several listen.

according to raymarine this is not true, if you haven't I would give it a try and see if it works.

  10. I have had mine a couple years without the rudder reference it works pretty good. Was planning on adding the reference this year but gotta save for a new motor instead. Without the rudder reference you will need to make adjustments to the response settings and anti rudder settings to match wave and wind conditions. More than a few times I have had to make change to the AP while trolling because wind and waves changed. Some of this is due to my personal setting to begin with Since I prefer to keep the boat quiet so I run with slower response settings because in my boat most have problems driving due to over steering. So on a calm day or certain troll patterns I crank the response way down and let the boat pretty much sit the troll on it's own. Doing this is much nicer than hearing it constantly trying to steer but a large gust of wind or a set of waves from a passing boat can bump you off course.

thanks for the feedback guys, I've been able to troll a mile without touching the wheel before so hopefully it will perform well without it.

  11. Let me know when you are going to install it i am in Jenison and can come over and maybe help you out. I made a lot of phone calls to ray marine before installing mine. Is yours last years model with the flux gate compass.

Yes mine has the compass still, I didn't realize they were shipping the new evo with it, wish I woulda known that I would have just bought the new one

I'd appreciate the help, I'm north of Zeeland, Baldwin and 96 area

  12. any suggestions to someone about to put in the same auto pilot? I haven't bought the rudder reference yet, and was somewhat planning on trying without it for a year. what made you decide to buy it?
