  1. I know it is fun to spend other peoples money, so here is your chance.

I am looking to upgrade to full size Marine Radio. I would like to know which one would be the best bang for the buck and which ones to avoid. Not looking for a lot of gimmics or bells or whisles. Just a powerful radio that can do the job well. Might as well throw in the antena too. I have little to know idea which products are best anymore. I see names of the radios that I never heard of and a few I have.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. All,

I just wanted to share a great organization called Fishing Has No Boundaries This charity connects people with disabilities with fisherman. It is a top rated non profit site according to the Independant Charities of America Website. Check out the Sponsors page, there are a lot of great companies standing up with FHNB. I signed up and this will be my first fishing trip out on Lake Winnebago in August. I am looking forward to sharing my blessings with someone that would not have the opportunity to do this on their own. I will be sharing pictures and the story then.

There are many families that deal with disabilities both emotionally and financially. For most of these families a nice fishing boat and all it's equipment is not on their radar and never will be. Please think about sharing a day or weekend with a person that has 100% pure desire and zero opportunity.

I know that the GLF community has so many great members here that have the drive to help out. As of now Michigan does not have a chapter and FHNB is hoping that someone or a group will have the desire to start a chapter in Michigan. If you are not in Michigan look on the website there maybe a chapter near you or you may want to help establish one. If you are willing to donate a day or two per year please sign up or willing to help with a chapter, I guarantee that you will get more in return that you ever thought possible.

If you are interested please contact Kathy Overman.

Kathy will be in Michigan presenting some information about FHNB Inc this June.

Kathy's email address is [email protected]

I have invited Kathy to become a member here and share some stories and information with us.

    Regards,

    Tom

  3. Personally I prefer a net that knocks the fish off on the first swipe... None of that swinging and bashing at the fish 6, 8, 10 times for me !

Seriously... an extendable handle is a must for me. I like to be able to reach out there. Helps if you have a youngster on the reel or a long dipsey rig.

I second the coated net and the lightweight frame. (Tony, James) :thumb: Just dont try and pick up net and fish horizontally. bend there and prefer to not do that again.

  4. Wow Ron!! Crazy!

I sure hope the plug is in! The marina dropped it in the water Friday... LOL

This isn't currently rigged for fishing. Was a family cruiser. But I was thinking, I cut the check this afternoon, about a 1/2 hour mounting Traxstech track, and I could at least be running dipseys and in line boards out of my triple rodholders... Evening bite?? LOL

Mike.. I totally intend on putting it through its paces.. The lake is supposed to build to 2-4 ft this afternoon so I think it should be a good test..

Thanks for the responses, guys! Heading to Grand Haven shortly...

    Bill,

That is not a bad plan! I made 5 trips out last year before I got the down riggers and brackets on her. Dipseys are way more stealthy than riggers. Plus you can run two per side.

Good Luck and hoping to see some pics when its done!

  5. That's funny! I was sitting next to my 11 year old daughter as I was reading it and started counting on my fingers. My daughter asked what I was doing, to which I responded "math". She gave me a real funny look when I did it twice.

    Chris

Too Funny! I bet your 11 year old is not going to forget that one!

  6. Just in case you leave the tuna in your cut bait plug, here is a helpful hint so do not have to toss out the plug.

I know no one ever forgets to clean up the cut bait plugs on purpose. I guess learned the smelly way! Tuna gets to stinking bad especially when you leave it in your live well where it is alway damp!

Just in case you are just as forgetful as I am. The bad scent gets imbedded into the plastic of the body! You should not run the plug all stinky, you never want to be the stinky kid! No need to toss em out, just descent them. This will not harm the finish or the line. Here is the fix.

First clean out the remaining tuna, it will be dry but extremely ripe. Next fill a large glass with hot tap water, 120 degree is fine. Now add a 1/3 to 1/2 cup of baking soda. Mix and then drop in the cut bait plug. Make sure you drop in the rubber tubing band and the leader. Let it soak overnight. Presto no more stinko. :thumb:

    Works on meat rigs too!

Remember those salmon are like blood hound with fins!

  7. SHAWANO, Wis. - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has tagged a 125-year-old sturgeon that's bigger than a linebacker.

Officials found the over 7-foot-3-inch long, 240-pound female on the Wolf River near Shawano on Tuesday.

DNR sturgeon biologist Ron Bruch says she's the largest they've tagged on the Lake Winnebago system since they started the tagging program in 1950s. She would have weighed about 30 pounds more, but she already laid some eggs.
