  1. The bags I have were made for up to a 20 ft boat and are the 18 inch ones. I'm glad I got the 18's instead of the 15's. Here is a link http://https://amishoutfitters.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=1&zenid=79f6b0d8e8ee379767e98f47781e3e99
  2. In the past I've had difficulties trolling slow enough. I have a 90 eTec on a 17 ft Boston Whaler Montauk and couldn't get down below about 2.7 to 2.8 mph. Bought some Amish trolling bags and just started using them. Yesterday while trolling into the wind I was able to get it down to 1.0 mph with the bags. I believe this would be about 1.4 mph with no current. Has greatly increased my trolling speed range and allowed my engine to run fast enough to charge the battery. My eTec doesn't seem to charge when down to 650 rpm but does fine at 800 rpm. What speed do you guys like for each species?
  3. Got out first time today. Caught 1 Coho, 1 King and 1 Lake Trout. Water temperature was about 37-38 in the Lake and >42 Deg in the mud line. Went out of St. Joe today.
  4. Went fishing yesterday and of the 28 miles I covered, 20 miles were at 25-30 mph and the other 8 miles at trolling speed. What a difference my 90 etec compared to my old 100 Johnson. This trip in the Johnson would have burned 5 gallons in the 20 miles and almost 3 gallons trolling for a total of 8 gallons. Saved about 5.5 gallons or close to $20. I have a 10 and a 12 gallon tank and with the old motor I would basically drain one tank on an outing where I went 10+ miles offshore. I not usually don't have to switch tanks for 3 trips. So far I'm very pleased with my etec.
  5. Where are the fish at? Went out yesterday for the 1st time and started in 150 FOW and trolled out to 208 FOW. Didn't catch anything or even mark a fish. What the heck? Have a good sonar too (Humminbird 788 CI HD DI). Water was 70 deg on the surface at 208 FOW.
  6. I'm getting my boat ready today. Anyone had any luck yet? My brother told me they were catching some out of St Joe but has been very sporadic when the weather had allowed fishing.
  7. I was fishing off of Weko Beach in Bridgman. They just have a steel ramp going out into the water. It works fine for my 17 foot Whaler. I caught the big one in 105 FOW on 300 copper with a Walleye planer. 300 copper is suppose to go down 60 feet. Was using a dreamweaver mixed vegie spoon that I borrowed from my fishing buddy. I went 4/4 and my buddy went 2/6 but one he lost was a Skemania which have a higher percentage of getting off. The 2nd biggest King was 12 lbs.
  8. 3 Chinook and 3 Coho. The big King is 17 lbs.
  9. My buddy went out of New Buffalo this morning at 0600 and limited out. 3 Skemanias, 6 King and 1 huge lake trout which they threw back. Claimed it was around 20 lbs. They caught most all of them on copper line. They also missed a big king that straightened the hook. Wish I had been along.
  10. Wow! Them brown pictures were really cool. My biggest brown ever was 6 lbs. Did win a steelheader contest with a 3 1/2 brown.
  11. Thanks for all the help. I'm surprised no one recommended the trolling close to shore. One of my co-workers caught many over the years casting from shore in waders in the very early morning hours.
  12. I've been toying with an idea of going out really early even before the sun is fully up and trolling for Browns. In my 37 years of fishing Lake Michigan, I've caught very few browns. I'm thinking of trolling within a 100 yards of shore with surface lines as I've heard they like warm water. I was planning on running 2 planing boards (walleye boards) and 1 surface line. I would think I would need some type of lure that will dive somewhat. I have many hot-n-tots and tadpollys. I also have been led to believe that the lines should be way back from the boat. Anyone here have much experience with catching browns?
  13. Only 1 fish. Went straight out to 213 feet and didn't get a hit until we'd trolled into 90 FOW. Did not mark many fish either.
  14. Middle of May and this will only be my second time out. Weather has been absolutely terrible for the weekend only fisherman. I think the wind has been +15 mph and always out of the north. I'm surprised that all the fishing has been out so deep this early in the season. It wasn't like this during the salmon hey days of the early 80's. With the good weather this morning, going to run out to 200 feet and work our way back in until we hit some.
  15. First trip out and came home with a 10 lb King. Put on a good show of strength for only 10 lbs. Unfortunately, was the only hit we had. Didn't mark many which maybe due to my inexperience with my new Humminbird 788. King is going in the smoker this morning.
  16. Going out of St Joe for the first time this year. The weather hasn't aligned with my schedule. My brother and friends caught 2 browns, 1 King and 13 coho last saturday. I hoping for 10 coho. They are so good in the smoker.
  17. I here Saturday is going to be fishable. Hopefully, I can get out for the first time.
  18. I'm just waiting for the lake to lay down. It seems like they are always hungry even when the water is cold after the winter ice.
  19. Put my ice fishing stuff away 3 weeks ago and looking forward to some spring cohos. The boat is ready to go and I'm ready to hit New Buffalo for some cohos.
  20. This buoy is to do a study for moving the Cook water intake further offshore. This move is to get colder water which increases electrical output by quenching steam better. Each unit at Cook makes about 50-60 megawatts more in the winter versus the summer.
  21. I have a friend who talked to his buddy who is Supt of Water for Benton Harbor. This guy said perch have been being impinged on their water inlet filters. Said he hadn't seen this in 25 years. Was out Monday salmon fishing and marked some likely perch schools in 50-60 FOW. Apparently the warm weather has brought them closer to shore.
  22. Went out of the St Joe river today. Since 1975, this was the most amount of boat damaging logs and other debris I've ever seen. Many of these are staying in the river trash line. Please use extreme caution. Oh by the way....couldn't get out to the good fishing. At 0830, waves were about 4 feet in 50 feet of water. Trolled around behind the south pier and tried for some browns but it was probably too late in the day. With all of our lines rigged, we headed out and turned around when it got to rough around 50 feet. I guess my buddy and myself have turned into wimps.....20 years ago it would have been full speed ahead.
  23. Have used my new 90 HP Etec now about 5 times. It is amazing on gas compared to my old V4 Johnson 100 HP. Quiet and smokefree as well. Have a total of 22 gallons in 2 tanks which have only been filled once since the new motor. Plenty of power for a 900 lb Montauk.
  24. Smoked 11 lbs of lake trout filets today. Took 3 1/2 hours to do the 3 fish. They really turned out scrumptious.
