  1. Saying you have no way to recover it does not apply as there are ways to get it back however the Coast Guard not being willing to remove your property does not make it fair game for anyone who wants it. Consider this you are out hunting and get hurt the DNR or Sheriffs patrol rescues you and takes you in for care is your Truck and hunting gear free for anyone to take and claim. since you are on Michigan property either way the same laws would apply.

I think you are missing the point here. The people who get rescued are usually on ice flows going out to nowhere. I am not in any way shape or form defending what they do, but your hunting example does not really apply here. If I had a heart attack and was rescued.... my truck, stand, and equipment etc are not in danger of dangering the ecosystem. My example solely applied to the hard place they would be in with no easy way to get to their stuff. Its the whole reason they are being rescued. Granted this would be a RARE occurance, but I believe they are capitalizing on the fact that there are penalties for stuff falling into the water in god knows where. Where as my hunting stuff on dry land there is easy access, and no Major fines for your truck being parked there for an extended period of time. I also did not say it was "fair game" merely that these people are using their ability to recover this stuff in a adverse scenario to their advantage. That and the fact that id have to check the laws on possible fines for stuff falling in. Again not trying to argue for them or condone their behavior, basically trying to see if they exist or not.

  2. I am not a lawyer but anyone taking your property without your consent would be a thief. There is no international waters on the Great Lakes so that portion of Maritime law would not apply. It would be no different than if your car broke down and I came by and towed it home I would have no legal right to it and any attempt to force you to pay would be extortion. Sadly however it would only apply to registered vehicles your fishing gear and personal stuff would be fair game. On the other hand if I was a licensed recovery service and I called and told you I was at your Quad and you could either agree to pay or I would leave it behind that would be legal and I could charge anything I choose and have a legal lien if you failed to pay.

This makes perfect sense, however this is what this guy said to me, so I neither support this nor discredit it. If your Quad is out on the ICE and the coast guard comes to "Rescue" you... They rescue you and not your quad. That beeing said you are now leaving your quad behind and have no way to get it. If that quad goes into the water isnt there a fine coming your way from the EPA? gas, Oil, Etc? Is the value of the Quad more then the fine? Im not sure, but the theory has merit. I guess I was looking for concrete evidence to either support this or not.

  3. they showed something like that on Michigan out of doors last year. Didn't say anything about what they charged but they showed them going out on erie to do rescues and get equipment. The guys that they were with actually used the craft to get out to where the fish were and then when they had break offs they went and did rescues.

ya this guy who was a laborer said he was saving his money to buy one of those crafts so he could do it. I question his motives due to the fact that I think he was only in it for the equipment, and not an actual rescue.

  4. I heard a guy at work talking today about some guys out in Saginaw bay that call themselves the "Saginaw Bay Pirates".

Basically had this elaborate story on how this group of guys has these floatboats and hoverboats that go out on the ice to get the equipment of the ice fisherman who get stranded and picked up by the coast guard? Then either charge them OUTLANDISH amounts of money for their quads or snowmobiles, or just keep them so they dont get fined by the EPA for them going into the water.

Seemed far-fetched to me, but I can understand the EPA fines, and the Coast Guard just saving you and not your equipment.

was this guy crazy or is there some merit to this story?

  5. Interesting.. what do you mean by skinning? is that the process whereas you remove both sides from the spine? and then the actual fillet process is separating the skin from the meat itself? or do I have this backwards... All I know is, what I saw was speed... greasy fast speed. in the time it took me to type this sentence they would have a fish done, and believe me I can type pretty fast.

  6. A few years ago I was fishing out of Pentwater, and when we came in to clean our fish, some of the charter captains were cleaning there as well. I remember talking to one about the knife he was using and instantly fell in love when he let me try it. It was Large and looked like a machete. I wanna say he said he got it from great lakes cutlery? I just cant remember. Do any of you guys know what I am talking about?

  7. I started salmon fishing lake Huron around 7-8 years ago, a friend of mine and I decided just to drive out to Lexington which is on the southern end of the thumb north of port Huron. When we arrived there was a CROWD of people catching these fish left and right. It was a blast and I enjoyed every second. The very next year it seemed that we needed to chase the fish from Lexington all the way to Port Austin. And subsequently every year after has been worse and worse. This year is the worst I have ever seen it. I used to think my lack of success was purely on my lack of skill and knowledge. However the statistics across the board tell a different story. I hear about the alewives being gone and the lack of food for these fish. However I will say that I was fishing the black river mouth last week, and I can tell you I have never seen so many baitfish in my life. There was a constant stream of small baitfish and large amounts of emerald and what looked like Gizzard shad. There also was a large amount of Gobies as well, as kids were catching them in bucket fulls. I have heard that the lakers have possibly made the move to eating the gobies? One thing is certain the King Salmon has become the Unicorn of Lake Huron, and I dont know if they are coming back.

  8. It was awesome... I think I got my picture in the paper too.. I was fishin with my Dog, and I was standing out in the middle of that River almost floating away, while my Choclate Lab Trigger was just standing like a statue with his feet in the water watching me. Some guy was out there taking pictures and I caught him snapping a few of Trig and I... I was going to ask what they were for, but I was focussed on my goal =) Gonna hit up some of the tributaries of the Black on Friday, and I will have my camera this time. Thanks again for all your help. EVERYONE here.

  9. Thinking of taking the wife shore fishing on friday in the Port Huron area again. With all this warm weather we have had, should I just look for a certain water temp? Also how much time should I give it at that temp? Other then that, what other major factors should I consider?

  10. Welcome Adam... I have not been a member for very long, but I think you will find that the information here is as informative as it is helpful.

As far as the boat name goes, I always thought I would win that 1 million prize from the McDonalds Monopoly game, from a large Fry... So I was gonna call my Bertram "The Hot Potato"

Boat names, now that would be a fun thread.

  11. Thanks for all the input on the Rods.. I was contacted by Eyeful, and im going to purchase one of his Rods. a 9'6" Rainshadow with all the goodies. I also am stoked that they are making what I feel may be the perfect reel for that lightweight rod. I have 2 of the Shimano CI4's for my bass fishing finesse applications, but until recently they only produced them in the 1000 and 2000 series sizes. Not enough enough line cap for a fish that may go for a serious run... BUT.... I went to the pro show 3 days ago and seen that they are making this reel in 3000 and 4000 series sizes! the 4000 weighs in at only 9.7 ounces! the 3000 is even lighter, but Im lovin that 4000. Gonna get with Eyeful the start of next month and then team her up with that reel.. Pics to follow!
