  1. I took the winner's names out of the listings.. It used to be THE BIGGEST tournament in michigan lol.. Still is the largest ladies tournament on the great lakes...It's getting better than the last 3-4 years thats for sure...

Super tournament numbers were slightly down due to the 7-10ft waves forecasted on sunday which ended up being 6-8s..41miles isnt fun to run in those kinds of waves. Im not sure on the exact numbers, but normally its 30-40 boats.

  4. I praise the tournament committee for trying to get more people into the sport. The sport of salmon fishing is something i firmly believed is taken for granted. It won't be there forever.

The Big Red Classic has only been around 15 years, so its not like its a long running tournament. It's changed multiple times throughout the years. The tournament is a non profit organization aimed at providing a significant contribution to the Boy's and Girl's club....

It's a catch 10 fish tournament. This isnt a catch 6 weigh 5, single division tournament like the Michigan Brown Trout Festival has been for 37 years.. Solid fishermen SHOULD still be able to pull those larger fish consistently. There are several divisions!

In my personal opinion, if your going to sit out a tournament because you feel anyone could win it, than your not confident in what you do, and should start revising the way you fish, and the species you target.

  6. Be thankful your still near the pond! I've spent every holiday imaginable 500+miles away from home and my family. Maybe you didnt get to fish this weekend, but there is a lot of the season left!!! :) You'll get a few more chances to whack em and have plenty of fun!

That being said... i woulda told the group to shove it when plans were being made :P Fishing is WAY more important. lol

  7. It's hit and miss right now. There is an astounding amount of smelt in the area and the fish are really patterning on them. The day time bite has realllly been up and down. It was really good about 2 weeks ago, but has since slowed. There are still fish to be found during the night time bite. You'll really wanna keep an eye on the wind and water temps, letting that make the decision on where to go for you. Lastnight my normal partner went out and took his ten fish from 2am-4am. All body baits on the big reef. Hope this helps! Goodluck!

PS: as far as night time fishing goes, It's pretty much ALWAYS 14ft or less.

  8. Sorry all, got sent to WV where they've yet to discover internet...

The kings came on pretty much everything, 10 colors of lead(kavorkian) wire dipspey 80 back, and flat lines with body baits.

As far as a recent report. Numbers out of Alpena are GREAT, although the run isnt.. 36 miles straight east of thunder bay island is producing awesome numbers of lake trout and steelhead. Lake trout are all VERY nice fish in the 10-15lb range.

Walleye out of alpena has been hit and miss. LOTS of bait around. Daytime bite has been tough, but the night time bite has been pretty good. Fish are being caught on the big reef as well as partridge point. Body baits in 12-15ft of water right on the structure.

  9. Headed out this morning with the "Chum Bucket" on his grady white. Fished right around the light house in presque isle around 60-90ft of water. Started the morning off 0-3 on atlantics. Unfortunately the acrobatic suckers just would calm down enough to get close enough to the boat. The atlantics all fired on 5 colors of leadcore with blueberry muffin silver streaks as we were setting. We finally got all set and got into a few kings. Ended up going 6-7 with the kings, returning 2 dinks. After those shut down the lake trout bite turned on. 10colors of lead produced with kavorkian silverstreaks. We ended the day 7-10 on lake trout, with 2 undersized fish going back. It turned out to be a pretty good morning!

  10. Monday afternoon we arrived in Holland. Having never fished here i was eager to get on the lake. We left pretty early to bomb around and see what we could find. Ended up dropping lines in about 530pm. Found some fish in 125ft of water down 50-60 on the riggers. Blue dolphin and Caramel dolphin both produced. 300 Copper with a NBK also produced some action. We ended the evening going 6-10.

Tueday night we found fish in 100ft of water. After the sun went down the rods started firing! Everything we threw at em seemed to work. Ended the night with 12 kings and a lake trout. All moonshines we threw down seemed to produce. Riggers down 35 and 45 were by far the best.

Thursday was much slower. We did end up picking up our biggest fish so far, just over 18lbs. We finished 6-9. This time fish were in 55-65FOW and down 25-50 on the riggers.

  11. The slot limit is from PI north now. Brand new this year. Slightly confusing. I still think fishing out of rockport is your best bet. Its just south of grand lake. If your not familiar with the launch it can be kind of tricky, but its a GREAT place for a small boat right now. Fish are pretty much 100 yards past the pier head. Hit 20ft and turn north. :)

PS. I absolutely hate the michigan dnr website. It needs to be completely redone.

  12. I'd go south of PI. They changed the lake trout laws, and implemented a slot limit from PI and north :(. Alpena near thunderbay island is excellent right now. Mostly a spoon bite. We've picked up kings and atlantics out of rockport but the laketrout seem to be scarce so far.

  13. Got out for the first trip in the big boat this year. Launched at about 5:45am and turned the pier and set lines. As we began to set our third line, the 2color lead and one of the 1/2oz inlines went off. Much to our surprise these fish started the acrobatics. The first one popped off, but we manage to land the 2nd. We couldn't believe it. A 14.75lb king. If you know anything about the area, you'll understand :P. We got lines reset and hit a small 3-4lb brown. In the next hour the bugs really came out and so did the lake trout. We boxed out in about 45mins and headed back in to get away from the swarming bugs!

  14. Got out this evening for a shakedown of the walleye boat. Started out pretty rough, but calmed down quickly. We launched at 10pm and fished till 12. Ended the night with 4 nice eyes. All fish came on #18 rapalas. Good colors were old school firetiger and vampire. Still pretty slow, but its only going to get better once the water clears up! All these fish were packed full of smelt :)

  15. Finally made it back to Michigan after about 3 months away at work. Weather here is prettttty bad, therefore not allowing us to get the boat wet. Decided, after being away for so long i needed to do SOME type of fishing. My best bud Kevin and I headed down to the river in Alpena to hopefully whack a steelie or 2. Not another soul was down there, which made it even more enjoyable. We fished for about an hour and a half landing one hen weighing about 5 lbs and losing 2 smaller acrobatic males. Turned out to be a GREAT day on the river!
