I always pick up a couple of game hens at the grocery store and toss them right into the brine with my fish. Then I put them on the smoker with my fish. When they turn a golden brown pull them off. The meat should just flake off from the bird. Serve the bird up with salmon dip and crackers, this is an awesome combo. Make sure that you are first in line because the last in line will get the crumbs.

Sounds like a good time. You used to be able to walk on boats from Mildand to Bay City on the opener. Sounds like you had room to fish. Good job on the walleye.

There goes the rest of the UP deer. If you can keep him over there by Munising, Bromley. I think that the USFWS is driving around the UP at night throwing them out of the back of pick up trucks.

Interesting post. In St Ignace you can find salmon in May & June hanging in 200 fow by St Helena Island or by Mackinac Island still deep. Late June July & August you can catch them in 80 fow or less right off of St Ignace. The bigger salmon are usually in the deeper water. I stay in shallower water and set up for steelhead, atlantics, and lakers. I don't usually target the kings until later on.

Went 2 for 2 on Steelhead Saturday and 0 for 2 on Sunday. Both fish on Saturday were about 8 pounds. I expect things to be better in another week or two. i could not get a fish to look at a fly but they did hit on the spawn.

I run a spoon about 30 feet behind the cannonball which I have about 60 feet down in 80 fow then a fixed slider about 10 feet up with a spoon. Then I have my stacker set with directional divers at about 25 feet. The stacker poles are on the outside. It works good in the early am when the fish are running at different depths. When you have a big fish on you have to pull everything or mess with the birds nest later. If you are alone in the boat I don't recommend using a stacker. Just the two poles and a slider will work good. Setting up is very easy if you use a free slider. Just clip it on and toss it overboard.

This may help you out a bit. Chinook start showing up in St Ignace and around Mackinac Island around mid June. The numbers keep increasing as summer progresses. I believe alot of salmon that were planted in N Lake Huron migrate south during the winter and move back north during the summer. Check the LSSU fish cam usually by July they show up in the Soo and you can see them at the powerhouse. Nobody really launches their boats up here until at least mid may so we are almost two months behind the guys in the lower.

Get it going you still have a whole lot of time to get it in the water yet this year. Don't worry about it being old as long as it runs good. THe best looking boats don't always have the fullest coolers at the end of the day. My boat is an old one but it sure catches its share of fish. I even use a couple of 40 year old salmon poles on it just to give it some extra charm.

They might be checking to see if it is a cross between an Atlantic and a Brown Trout. Then you would have a record of another type. What would they call it? I believe that these fish exist and they raise them in a hatchery in Illinois for market only.

My boat is a Starcraft Holiday with a 120 I/O. I can assure you that they handle rough water well and they are great salmon fishing boats. Good luck selling the boat. I really like mine, it came with $2000 worth of gear and the price was $2000 so how coiuld I go wrong?????

I live by one rule. If you can't walk out to get them they are not worth fishing for. I am sure that the guy in the truck will be back out there next year at first ice ....in his truck. Other than this post I only had one person tell me about him.

Now that I have your attention!!!! Do not forget to get your new fishing license. Just trying to save you guys some lure money. I know from years past in the NLP and EUP the DNR checks very hard the first few days of April for slackers and they write loads of tickets. It is the only time that I have been checked, the first couple of weeks in April.

Good job. Glad to hear that boats are getting out and catching fish. Mine is still covered up. I don't forsee too much boat action in the EUP until mid may or later. It is a short season up here I have an I/O I don't want to get it out too early. Next boat will be an outboard for sure that will extend the season by 3 months.

I was out this past weekend for steelhead, the fish are slowly coming into the rivers. I caught 3 fish nothing too big but the good eating size. The water levels are pretty low and we need rain. If we get the rain I think that the fishing will get better. Very few smelt are being caught, but some are showing up. Maybe by the weekend there will be more fish action.

Today March 20, 2010 has been declared meatout day by Jennifer Granholm at the request of PETA. Let your neighbors know that PETA sucks by firing up your grill or smoker today. Throw on a slab of venison, fish, or other wild game and cook away. Let the aroma of grilling meat fill the air. If you live in Lansing throw a BBQ so big Jen will have to follow her nose. Today has been declared backstrap day so get em out and grill em up.

The ice is gone or close enough to being gone that I don't take chances. I caught 16 Steelhead through the ice this winter, the guy I fish with he caught 9. The average size was about 8 lbs the smallest was 5 lbs and the biggest was 14 Lbs . So it has not been a bad winter. I am getting the long poles ready to go for some spring fishing before I put the boat in the water. We saw lots of coyotes and a couple of wolves out on the ice this winter and almost lost a steelhead to an eagle. It has been a fun winter to say the least.

Are you fishing in an area where there is some current? If you are in an area near an island or a point the current can really change how a dipsey diver works. I have a difficult time with my dipsey divers when I fish between St Ignace and Mackinac Island. One day they work well and the next day I cannot run two poles to save my life.

Nice job too bad the cover is still on my boat. Makes me want to get out there though. I"m counting the days....have to make the repairs on the boat before I put her in the water though.
-
Nice catch the population is starting to decline already. I got some nice bows through the ice up in the straits but it is time to get out the long poles now. I won't launch the boat for a month or two. I am in no rush, I like to get the salmon and they won't show up until July. Meanwhile I can work on the boat.

Look good. Way to put the hook to them

Congrats, sounds good ! Like you I will have 20 in on 09-08-2010 and my wife does not care to fish either. I will probably get her on the boat a couple of times this summer. It is great cause she does not care how much I fish. I am a fishing fool.

Way to go with the Ford Boltman. Have to get everything ready for the big water in the UP now. The ice is gone long gone. I will be towing it not too far with a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. The Jeep was not made to tow as it really goes through the gas. I will have the boat out in the water in May for trout as the salmon never show up until July.

Looks good has anyone been out yet??? A couple of more days and I can drop lines under the Mackinac Bridge. Way too cold out yet though

I can tell you from first hand experience that the freshwater intake structure to that plant has some good fishing. You have to work there to get access to it. Back in the day when I was a security guard there you could fill a lunch box with big perch or whitefish in 5 minutes. So after lunch I was fixing for some dinner.

Nobody has ever blamed climate change on the lack of salmon in L Huron. The L Huron Salmon move north every summer. When the melt off comes early the salmon show up un St Ignace earlier. You guys downstate have it made launching your boats on April 1 and catching nice trout and salmon but they are gone by May 30. Then you can walleye fish all summer long. My prediction is that the salmon will be in the straits area by early June this year. We will have good fishing June July and August, then our boats hibernate while you guys fish right through november. For those 90 days or so our fishing is pretty good up here. The DNR is working on getting Atlantic Salmon introduced throughout the state so be patient and your salmon fishing could return.
