  1. Read a few reviews online about this GPS not locking onto sats after a year or so of use. Has anyone on GLF had this problem? Just curious before I purchase. Thanks!
  2. Ernie was extremely helpfull! It sound like the H2O with a Lakemasters pro Michigan card is what I need. It also sound like the H2O c is worth the extra 100 bucks, but eats up batteries faster. What would you guys do? H2O for 120 or H2O c for 220?
  3. Hey Guys, I was looking to get a GPS which I can use on the great lakes. I need something that will work good for ice fishing, so I'm not constantly drilling holes and dropping weights to find reefs, drop offs, humps, those kinds of things. I heard the lowrance h2o is a good one, but I'm not sure where to get one and what maps/chips I would need. Can someone help me out in purchasing the right thing?
  4. going out this weekend with a friend. what station will you have the radio on? josh
  5. Looking to purchase a cheap depth finder for a 14 foot boat. My cousic bought a boat without any electronics, just to chase some walleyes around little bay. He doesn't need anything too fancy, just something basic (Poor college kid). Just wondering if anyone had one collecting dust at the house and wanted to get rid of it for a good price? Thanks, Josh
  6. It had been almost 2 weeks since my last fishing adventure. Had to get my fix last night. Got 5 Fish (3 King, 2 Lakers). Some good eats here. Oh yeah, went home last weekend and found one of my dad's old nets and changed out the netting with my POS net. I forgot how easy it was to net a fish when the fish don't fall threw the gaping holes in it. Sad though, landed alot of fish with that net, just wasn't getting the job done anymore. Here's the proof.
  7. Makes the fish I'm catching look like minnows! Great fish!
  8. my brother is sitting on the cooler...King for a day
  9. Sorry it took so long, but here is a picture of saturday night after we got off of the water.
  10. Man, I wish I could make it down for this event. Kind of a far drive from Houghton Have fun guys!
  11. I agree with running your lures up high. The only fish I've caught when it's completely dark are on green dolphins with glow backs, faintly charged. I run the 100 to 125 feet out, snap them onto a walleye board. The best way is to let them out by using a light drag and then slowly tighten the drag until it stops clicking, this way you here the fish and don't have to rely on seeing the board in the dark. I like to troll slower then too (2mph) and just let than spoon flutter just under the surface. Some hard strikes on that set up.
  12. This seems to be a hot debate and I see how both sides can make a case. I'd like everyone to weigh in on this topic. THANKS!
  13. What are the best hooks on spoons?
  14. Hey Guys, I had the chance to take a first timer out last night. A buddy of mine from my softball team had never been salmon trolling. The salmon didn't let us down! We got out around 6:30 and trolled until 9:00 with only 2 lakers in the boat, and you could see the worried looks on their faces. Then we finally hooked a salmon, about a 3 pound coho. My buddy gottem up to the surface and the fish threw the hook. At this point he was really worried he missed his only chance at a salmon. Then came the 15 minutes of fame. We hit two nice kings on the next pass, then turned around and hit another king (6 pounder) on the way back. The fish had darted at the boat and dove under the trolling motor and got wrapped up, so i reached over to pick him up and the net some how fell in the lake. I hurried to throw the fish in the livewell and cranked the boat back around to get the net. Once we got the net back, I told my friend to let out the flasher fly rig to 45 feet on the line counter reel, and I started to crank up the downrigger. I no sooner got about 4 cranks on the downrigger and a nice coho come up and slammed the flasher fly rig my buddy was holding on to. Got that that fish in and then the action went dead. Just like I told him when we left the boat launch. "Sometimes it can be 4 hours of nothing for 15 minutes of fame."
  15. I'm going out tonight, but keweenaw bay will be like glass oh yeah
  16. I'm waiting on the pictures, which my dad is going to email to me tonight. I'll post them as soon as I get them. Results... Saturday was windy as hell. A strong south wind 20 to 25 mph stirred up the bay alot and basically ruined any chance of getting my 16 footer on the bay, so we ended up bringing in my dads big boat and put the Big Jons on it. Then we put 5 people in that boat and 4 in the other. Got pounded by waves and rained on and off all morning, but we still managed 2 Kings and 2 red fin lakers. the other boat had motor problems saturday morning, so they couldn't go too far from the boat launch, but they did manage to catch one coho before they went back. The afternoon, the wind switched to the west, but still was aroun 15 to 20 mph. We ended up fixing the motor on the other boat and they made a nice comeback in the evening bite, but we ended up landing a 7 pound 2 oz King right at the buzzer to seal the deal. Overal Results for Saturday Team Rods & Balls: 4 Fish (2 Coho, i King, 1 Laker) The Spooners: 8 Fish (3 Kings, 3 Lakers, 1 Coho) 12 Fish boated in one day was definitely a success in my book given that weather conditions were almost unfishable. They were so bad, we only saw three other boats all day on a saturday! Not to mention the boat/motor problems. On a side note, the big jons are working flawlessly. Thanks again Bromley!
  17. By the way, the two other boats will be captained by guys that haven't been on keweenaw bay too much, so I'm putting together a small 5 page guide to fishing keweenaw bay. Anyone who wants a copy for their own use, just let me know and I'll shoot a PDF version out to you.
  18. Did some prefishing on Monday. Caught 5 fish (2 Kings, 1 Coho, 1 Steelhead, 1 laker). Not a bad Steelhead... Caught it on a Miami Dolphin I'm sure the big ones are just waiting until this weekend to bite.
  19. My brother is getting married in a couple weeks, so we are throwing him his 'poor bastard' Party this weekend. We are doing a salmon fishing tourny out of Lanse. 12 guys, 3 boats, and alot of beers. We have 3 teams... The Flashers (My Team) The Spooners The Rods & Balls Hoping for good weather, banking on good fishing. I'll post some pictures and results for the weekend.

    Salmon BLT

First cut your salmon fillets into chunks about the size of a big hamburger. Second, season the top of the fillets with Garlic Pepper. Next, take a pound of bacon (I like Hickory Smoked bacon the best) and cut the bacon slices into thirds and cover the seasoned side with bacon and place it bacon down on a grill basket. Then season the top on fillets with garlic pepper. Cover the top with bacon, close the grill baske and grill on a low heat. Depending on how thick the fillets are, it may take 20 to 30 minutes of grilling, but be sure to cook on a low heat where flamming up is not too bad. If the grill is too hot, the flames will burn the bacon before the salmon is cooked. Once the the bacon is a golden brown, your fish will be done. It should look something like this. Serve on a toasted bun or bread with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Sometimes I skip the veggies and I'll lay morels or onions on top of the bacon and grill it all together. Hope you guys enjoy!
  21. Don't know if there is a thread already started for this, so sorry if there is... Just wanted to see how many people out there fish in 16 footers or smaller for salmon. Join the group to talk shop!
  22. Just thought I'd share some pics from a trip a couple weeks ago when I took out a couple friends on Keweenaw Bay. This was the biggest one. 31 inch King, anybody got a guess on the weight, I'm not good with that stuff and I don't have a scale. Just know it tasted GREAT! 5 fish in total. 2 kings 2 coho and a lake skunk It rained that day, but the best thing about rain is the cool rainbow afterwards. This rainbow turned the water red it was so bright!
  23. I've spent the last 5 years fishing Keweenaw Bay. The best spoon by far has been the Green Dophin, or I think siler streak calls them a green alewife. Either way, it's a top performer in my book!
  24. Yesterday through this weekend marks the farewell tour of my old cannons. The tour kicked off with a last minute trip to Keweenaw bay last night. Got out late, but still managed to catch three kings. A friend of mine is moving away this week, and he wanted to get out in the boat one last time. Here he is with the catch... (Sorry, camera phone pics aren't the greatest)
  25. I'm looking to start fishing off the Ford River can or Fairport, but I'm unsure on which color flies to use. I like green in lake superior, but haven't had much luck on green in lake michigan the couple times I fished down there. What are your top two spoons for fishing these areas?
