Thanks Mike, It sounds like if the cable is acting as a ground then it would just accelerate the corrosion. So, I need to either lubricate the cable with the cable buddy product mentioned earlier, or possibly replace the cable, and then make sure the cable isn't acting as a ground. Glad I didn't have any other plans for the weekend.

I also have a 19' Starcraft w/125 hp with a steering problem. The description bluedevil gave sounds just like what I am seeing. I did some electrical work on it over the winter; moved the electric downrigger outlets and rearranged some wiring at the battery. If the ground is my problem, how do I check it?

Thats me. Nice pic, thanks. Just got the boat last fall. I used to fish out of a little 14 ft'er but the wife wouldn't let me take the kids out in the great lakes in it. Fixed that problem. Thats me driving, those are my two boys in the life jackets and my dad in the green jacket. That was our first family outing. The only action we had was a double. My boys took turns fighting the one we landed (their first salmon:D )while gramps lost his. The one we landed was a 10 lb king. Despite the wind and cold, I think I got the boys hooked.
