  1. Guys, I have most everything else but have not yet gone into copper or wire line salmon fishing.

However, living on Lake Superior, I do have wire line rods that were used for fishing lakers. They have 45# braided stainless wire on roller tip rods and with weight, typically run with 300 to 600 feet of line out to trace the bottom.

So the question is, could these be used for salmon? They are not set up on line counter reels since the objective was to keep letting out line until you bottom bounced.

  2. Since this post started with a question about running meat, I have a question.

I have seen posts about making sure that your meat head is properly "tuned". Can someone explain what that means and how it's done, if there is a technique?

    Thanks,

  3. I just read the order and I think it's legal since I buy the herring from a fish house in Marquette. The herring come from a VHS Free Zone, Lake Superior, so they can be used in any water. I believe the same applies if you get the herring from Lake Michigan and use it in Lake Michigan, then it's OK. What a confusing order!!!

I have a fish biologist friend who works for MDNR and I'll check with him and report his answer.

Thanks for the heads-up. We all need to help prevent the spread.

  4. Thank you. I really like the old girl. The only downside, now that I am getting old and fat:D, is the difficulty getting up front. There is a hatch on the foredeck but not real big. An arch to hang on to would be nice.

  5. Just saw MuskyBob's recipe and I know what is for dinner next Friday:) This one I made Thursday and it is great. Easy, fast, and folks who normally don't like fish try it and will love it too.

    Cheesy Salmon Chowder

    Makes 8 servings

    Prep Time: 15 Minutes

    Cook Time: 30 Minutes

    Ready in: 45 Minutes

    Ingredients

    3 tablespoons butter

    3/4 cup chopped onion

    1/2 cup chopped celery

    1 teaspoon garlic powder

    2 cups diced potatoes

    2 cups chicken broth

    1 cups diced carrots

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon ground black pepper

    1 teaspoon dried dill weed

2 (16 ounce) cans salmon, drained (Original recipe called for canned salmon. Any fish can be used.)

1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk

1 (15 ounce) can creamed corn

    1/2 pound Cheddar cheese, shredded

    Directions

    1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Cook onion, celery and garlic powder in butter until onions are translucent. Stir in potatoes, broth, carrots, salt, pepper and dill. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes, or until potatoes and carrots are done.

    2. Cube 2-3# salmon filets. Simmer in broth drawn from step #1. When fish is cooked, add everything to the big pot.

    3. Stir in evaporated milk, corn and shredded Cheddar until cheese is melted and soup is heated through.

    Enjoy!

  6. I have many interests, but the President's major job in my view is to keep us safe. Bush has done that, although he has done very poorly on a lot of other issues. The Democrats scare me, especially when the House and Senate are controlled by Democrats as well. Look at what they just did last week, going on vacation instead of addressing the electronic surveillance matter that was strongly passed by the Senate:angry2:

Guns are another interest. Obama says he supports the 2nd Amendment and that it applies to all of us. In the next breath he said he supports the DC gun ban. Go figure? Clinton has long been after our guns. And she is basically a Socialist. McCain only gets a C+ from NRA so he isn't much of a choice either.:(

Interesting that so many say the economy is bad. National unemployment is 5.2% I just heard, which is a little higher than the historic low hit a few months ago, but still good. Michigan, of course, has not enjoyed the roaring business expansion the rest of the country has.

Enough already, reading and talking about fishing is a lot more fun:D Guess I'll have to vote McCain, as the best of what we have left. Yuk!

  7. Made my own last year with some herring from the local fish-house. It's work, but the result was great.

Fileted the herring, thinned it to the proper thickness for the baitheads, cut the bait pieces to shape, packed in kosher salt for a few days to cure and suck the water out, cut and scraped the salt off, put in ziplock in the fridge with Mike's Herring Oil for a few days, then froze in small qualtity (5-6 pieces) bags for outings.

Like I said, a lot of work but the results are quite good. Something to keep you busy when you aren't on your boat:)

  8. Thanks. My first time out to fish it was in 4-7's with wind. Everyone chose to stay in port and go back to bed because of the conditions, except one guy who said he was going to try it for a while. Being so anxious, I decided to follow him out, first to chart the way between the rocks to deep water, and second because I was so hot to fish.

I was just amazed that with those conditions, we were actually able to fish with the wind and it really wasn't that bad. Even put a few in the box. Made a believer of me in my "new to me" Whaler.

This is a 1984 Whaler that had spent most of it's life in a boat house. I found and bought it in 2006. It even came with a variety of canvas configurations, all original, and all like new. Re-powered with a 200 Merc, now have 4 Walker electrics and a Subtroll, and am hot for the season to get here. Haven't had much time to fish the last few years but when I do, I fish at Fairport, MI, (the photo), Cedar River(Green Bay), or close to home in Marquette on Lake Superior.

The boat is a great fishing platform, small enough to trailer, yet big enough for most any weather conditions that come along.

  10. Is it just the one downrigger or all of them doing the same thing? If it is just the one then I would say something is not right with the rigger. Try and get a diagram of the rigger and compare it to what you have and see what is missing or contact cannon and tell them about the problem and they might be able to tell you why it is doing what it is doing. 12lb wheights should be no problem for just about any downrigger. Cannons are a good rigger and you will find that even the guys that dont run them usually dont have anything bad to say about them.

I run walkers and with sub troll probe and 12lb weight no problems. My close freind Moosky runs Big Jons with same set up with no problems.

Silver One, I just got a Subtroll last fall and also have Walkers. I read a post on GLA that Walkers tear the coating from the cable. Has that been an issue for you?

    Mike
