  1. Saw this somewhere else and thought that I'd share. I know GLF isn't the only one who has trouble telling the difference between chinook and coho. Some of us that are new to Great Lakes fishing struggle with it.

The easiest way I know of determining coho vs king is to compress the anal fin. If the front tip of the anal fin (when compressed) is more than half the entire length of the anal fin - you have a coho. Less then half the length - you have a king. This is the method all the DNR creel census wokers are taught to use here on Lake Superior.

    All black mouth = king

black mouth grey gums = coho

I think easiest for me is the uniform size and distribution of spots on the tail of the king. Coho have few if any on the lower part of the tail. Color, number of ridges in the anal fin and mouth color are also helpful but fastest is the tail

And don't forget to check the mouth on small steelies, it will be all cotton white, many confuse them with coho or vice versa.

    Hope these help.

  2. Since Caz hasn't submitted a report yet I will do it for him. We went 5/11, all kings. We were 3/9 by 7:30 and then picked up 2 stragglers later. Riggers were hot early with 5 of our first 9 hits, but only 1 fish. Started north of the pack(except for the 1 guy who set lines right next to us then cut in front and yelled at us) and headed north in 85 ft. Had a release on the rigger right away with no one home. While Caz was resetting the dipsey fired, Caz handed it to me and I farmed that one. Right after mine got off the other rigger fired, steelhead on the slider. That fish came all the way to the boat before getting off. Caz took a turn and landed our first fish on a dipsey with fishcatcher and fly, can't remember what colors. While Caz was fighting that fish the rigger fired again, I grabbed it and it felt like a real good fish but I never turned him before he was off. Travis lost one off a leadcore and then we had 2 more hits. Travis landed a fish off the rigger while I lost another off lead. Travis landed one and lost one before things pretty much stopped for us. I finally landed a fish off lead later in the day and Travis landed one on the slider off the rigger. Nice meeting you Travis and thanks for having me along Caz. Had a great time and I'll see everyone next week at the Dreamweaver.

  3. Don't worry about it Wayne, I accomplished almost everything I wanted to on saturday. I had never fished St. Joe before but now I know where the launch is and how to get out to the lake. Now I'm confident that when I see reports of fish being hammered in St. Joe I can hop in the truck, head down and not catch fish on my own. I don't need help for that. One thing that I learned is I will keep setting my planer boards to release. Then I'll have to think of new, more creative ways to let fish off. Thanks for letting me tag along. How did you do the rest of the weekend? Thanks for the ride Steve, I'm glad to have made it home awake.

I'd like to add that I was glad for the perch addition, at least we got to catch some fish.

  4. Blew the day off work and fished Holland this morning. All I have to say is "waves 1 foot or less" my butt. Ended up 3/4, 2 kings and a steelhead.

1st King: Glow Michael Jackson 75' back on mag dipsey on 0 in 70 ft.

    12lbs.

2nd King: Mixed Veggie on a half core 70 ft.

    8lbs.

Steelhead: Mixed Veggie on a half core 60 ft.

    8lbs.

Miss: Bloody Nose rigger 50' down 70 ft.

Dropped lines in 45', fished out to 130'

Heard reports on our way home of fish caught in tight 35'

    Tight Lines

  5. Fished out of Holland this morning. Started setting lines in 50 ft. of water due to a fishfinder malfunction. My partner set lines while I got it repaired. Took first fish in about 70 ft. on a Mixed Veggie on a full core. Only had about 30 ft. of the leader out when the fish hit. 5# King. Nothing else for a couple hours. Last 2 fish came in 160’-170’ water on pearl flasher/green fly 60’ down on a rigger. 3-4#’s. North/ northeast troll. 4ish more releases, all on same flasher/fly, no hookups. One rip on Double Orange Crush on a half core while netting another fish but nothing there. Marked a ton of fish but no takers. Great day on the water with a sunburn to prove it!:D

  6. I am looking to purchase a new fish finder. I have 2 hand held GPS units so I don't need one equipped with GPS. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is color important? What about 3-D? I was hoping to keep the cost around $400.00 I would love to hear some opinions before dropping the kind of cash these things cost.
