Ohio Division of Wildlife biologists worked with biologists from multiple agencies and groups to sample the Sandusky and Maumee rivers for grass carp, a type of Asian carp considered invasive but not as big a risk as other Asian carp species. Ohio Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman have worked in a bipartisan manner to protect and restore Lake Erie. This cooperation is needed again to protect the small streams and rivers that feed Ohio rivers and other waterways flowing into Lake Erie, as well as wetlands that cleanse water of pollutants before it flows into rivers and lakes. A new predator has emerged for piping plovers in the Great Lakes. For the first time, snowy owls were recently seen eating critically endangered plovers in several locations along the Great Lakes, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in lower Michigan and Vermilion Point in the Upper Peninsula. An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday reversed an Obama-era policy that ordered for the protection of oceans and the Great Lakes. U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) sent a letter to the President on Wednesday to remind him that there is a permanent federal ban on gas and oil drilling in the Great Lakes. The Minnesota Department of Health has issued “water contact not advised” warnings for Agate Bay Beach in Two Harbors, Knife River Marina Beach and Twin Points public access near Gooseberry Falls State Park after high levels of E. coli bacteria were measured at the three sites following heavy rainfall last weekend.
