  1. Welcome aboard.

Most folks troll in the mud and south out of the piers. Put the boat in 10 FOW and run high lines unweighted with spoons and body baits on planer boards. Jointed rapalas J-9 and J-11 in orange/gold, black/gold, blue/white, clown are very good. Thinfins, thinfish, rapalas, X-raps, and other body baits work well too. Play with speed a bit, but 2-3 mph works good. Good luck and let us know how you do.

    Massive trout

A 27.29-pound brown trout was reportedly caught on Monday at Burns Ditch.

“A guy got it casting an orange/gold K.O. (Wobbler spoon) from shore,†Eddy McCain of Mik Lurch Tackle in Hammond, said. “He had it weighed (on certified scales) at Town & Country (Market).â€

The Indiana state record, caught in 2006, stands at 29.03 pounds.

  3. Nothing wrong with shorter coppers.;) 75-225' rigs rock, add a snap weight, dive bomb, or torpedo weight if you want to go deeper. The 450-600' coppers are a pain, but do work. It just seems for as much as you invest in them they don't see too much action compared to the shorter segments.

The Okuma Convector GL copper/leadcore series has the large stainless eyes and works great on a modest budget. The Shimanos are really nice too.

  4. Glad you had fun. There were some great deals and some very knowledgeable folks there for sure. We had at least 4 charter captains and many tournament fishermen in attendance. Sounds like someone nabbed 6 dipsey divers new in package from one table. Sad to hear.

  6. Keep your wire divers set to 1 or 1.5 and you will probably be ok in most situations. Running high divers set to 2-3 over 100' back you are just begging to get into the copper if you get a decent fish that comes up into your copper rigs.

The best defense is a good offense. When a fish hits a diver in that situation reel the affected copper reel like mad to raise it up in the water column so that the diver will clear underneath it. We usually reel all the way to the board and hang it off that side until the diver line is clear and behind the boat.
