Same crabface RV didnt get hit this weekend. End of the night and we took it off the downrigger rod and the split ring just breaks in half.

Weird, its about a month old.

Grizz. Same moonshine mag rv crabface that has yet to cath a fish. Brought it in off the fullcore this weekend to see that it was 1/8 of a turn away from having no treble.

It has split the 2 rings and was holding on by a thread. Surely would have been a goner if it got bit.

We had some interesting issues sunday morning in a short trip from kewaunee, Wi.

We also had some hungry kings.

We had some lines breaking, kings burning drags, tangling in the gear, boards free floating and being chased down.

I have run free sliders on the SWR side and its a crapshoot.

I have a tiny swivel connecting the mono to the 2 colors of core and sometimes the fish wont slide down past that knot.

And yes its a longer ways to slide.

If you keep your rod really loaded up, and get on it quickly you have a very good chance.

You have no chance, if you dont even run it though.

I would run it and use willis knots from core to mono and I bet it would slide down over that just fine.

the latest cut after we tried to head in around 9 am and found some kings and bows in 45 to 65 fow and then pounded on em pretty good.

Run it off a board and get it out of the way of everything else. Fish it just like leadcore letting out all the copper then attaching the board to whatever you used for backing.

Let it out slow becuase it sinks fast and if your not driving straight you could drop it on top of your dipsey if your not careful and running a high dipsey.

I am using a small swivel with the haywire twist and that goes through the eyes just fine and is holding up well.

I like to let it out first when setting up at about 5 or 6 mph, it will pull out fast and smooth and you can get it out in 20 seconds with no fear of getting it in anything else, works fantastic.

Late report got out Friday June 8th from Kewaunee and literally ended up in Algoma.

The only time mine has gone underwater is when we had to make a hard right turn in 80 fow with the 250 copper on it.

Pulls pretty hard when you snag the bottom.

1000 is nuts. I agree on the 300 being as long as needed.

Me and 2 of my usual crew all got into copper this year, we got 200 250 and 300 between us. We are all using mono as far as I know. My original leader was 25 feet just like I do on core. One guy has 50 feet, and the other has 75.

We have yet to find one that is hotter than the other.

We have been running flasheers on the 250 and 300, and spoons on the 200.

Find what works for you and keep doing it.

Do to not having any thick mono at the time I rigged them up, I dont have any mono between the braid and copper to put the board on.

The releases are backwards as that the way the instructions said to set it up.

I have not double wrapped the braid and they have never released, never went under and they rid like they could carry less about a 4 foot wave.

No need for the flags on them either just take that junk off.

Have caught kings up to 18 pounds on them with no problems on 200 to 300 copper in 45 lb.

I got a tx 44 and its doesnt even look likes its doing any work with a 300 copper behind it. We dont let them out all far so getting the board of is the least of your worries, im more afraid of the 300 behind it:)

Agreed on the backer. its 15 bucks for 150 yards already. Im not paying 50 bucks for line that will probably never see the light of day.

Yeah might have to do that. I have seen so many different numbers on how deep that rig would get me. I guess I thought closer to 65 - 70 feet.

So the 75 to 100 feet that I have left, would be roughly 20 to 25 feet deep if I threw that on another rig?

Well i used a reel calculator that I think I found on this site. According that that calculation, 150 yards of of power pro, about 30 yards on mon, and then then 67 yards of 45 copper.

Jim whats your guess on depth for 45 pound copper at 200 feet?

Seahawk I did the same. 200 of 45 copper and 450 feet of power pro 50 lb on an okuma 45. Got it for 38 bucks new online. Plus a little mono to put the board on and a leader, there was not much room left.

Funny thing was I put on the 450 of Power Pro and winding it on my line counter said i had put on 850 feet of line. Thats shows how bad those counters are without a full spool or using the right line.

Copper was at 225 on the line counter, someday I will actually measure it in the yard to see if its at 175 or 225 or ????

Thats what I usally do on my hummngbird, is run the split screen in 83/200 mode.

One side is really cluttered with baitfish and blotches and really busy, the other side comes through with juts the arches around those pods.

It wook me a few trips last year, but I can watch the riggers drop until they swing back out of the cone at running speed, and also pick up a very clear thermocline in the morning and predark periods.

I have a humminbird with 200/83. The sensitivity goes up to 20.

There is also a max mode and clear mode.

Are you recommending using 200 mode, sensitivity somewhere around 15, and then ping around 80?

What if im fishing for walleyes in 15 fow? Any changes?

Check the wind, and the conditions from the day or half day before you want to go. Sometimes the wind dies at noon but the lake is still rolling pretty good at 5pm.

Be realistic about where you can fish, but I have been in 240 on a dead calm day in my 16 footer, and we do just fine....

I run them the same way you do. On the business end I have about a spoon 6 feet of flouro, swivel(to stop the diver from sliding all the way to the fish) then about 75 feet of money, then you could put braid back on if you wanted to.

I really liked the slive divers last year, very steathy for later in the day, a nice clean spoon out there away from the boat with a 75 to 100 foot leader behind the dipsey. If you ran the braid backing you could add some depth to the overall setup.

That combo is the best of both worlds if the fish are in the top 50 feet or so. You get depth and a fun fight on the braid to get the dipsey down, then stealth with mono flouro extended behind the diver.

There also wonderful if fishing solo because you can shorten up the leader from swivel to spoon to about 3 feet allowing you to have to only work with 3 feet of line at the boat instead of 8 to 10 that I normally work with on regular dipseys.

I saw an episode or Romanacks fishing 411, where they were using these directly off the dipsey diver and then running a spoon about 8 feet behind them.

I will give a vote for the shimano TDRs as well for leadcore, I think mine are 8 foot 6 as well. Good rod for the price.

And there sensitive enough that if I use a 2 color for walleyes you can still feel the fish just fine.

I run 8 lb balls. 150 lb line. And I have 200 feet per side.

The weights im were poured by a local guy in kewaunee and they have minimal blowback.

Best great lakes fish I ever ate was a 7 lb laker, never frozen, straight to the grill with a tiny touch of butter, some cajun seasoning and some lemons.

I think have the secret is getting them cleaned up real good before your freeze...bleed them out like walleyes buy cutting the gills if you can.

Also to save money on ice, bring 2 milk jugs frozen the night before. It will keep the core tempurate down in your livewell(if you dont bring a cooler, i dont have room for anymore junk) and the fish much fresher.

I big fish you caught at 4 am, sitting in bath water of a life well til 10 will look night and day different than one you caught 10 minutes before you shut it down for the day.
