Fishing Report

Is experiencing high water levels. Steelhead fishing will pick up when water levels come down. Suckers have been caught in the causeway.

Anglers are hoping the piers will be open by the weekend. Try connecting with some steelhead when drifting or floating spawn bags.

Also has a good number of steelhead. Fish have been caught on a jig and wax worm up near Rockford.

Near Lowell is also producing some steelhead.

Water levels will be up by the end of the week due to the recent rainfall. Those fishing near the dam at Moore's Park have caught steelhead and walleye when drifting crawlers. Reminder, walleye season is closed.

Is reporting very good steelhead fishing especially up near the Sixth Street Dam. The river was still a bit high, but fishable as of this report. Try using chartreuse spawn bags or a jig and wax worm. Crappie were caught on minnows when fishing off the East Wall.

Is producing good catches of steelhead.

Anglers can start pier fishing as the ice has finally melted off both piers. Fishing was still on the slow side for all species, but will pick up.

Has good steelhead fishing and there has been a lot of fishing pressure up near the Berrien Springs Dam. Boat anglers are doing well, most likely when walking spawn.

Pier fishing continues to improve with a few brown trout and steelhead caught when still-fishing with spawn bags or using spinners. Both piers are ice free.

High water here has also taken most of the ice off the lower river, though the ramps may have ice at their bases and launching large boats could be difficult. High water should bring up a fresh run of steelhead.

Ice is coming down from Lake Huron so boat anglers will need to use caution and pay close attention to wind direction. As of this report, the docks have not been put in at the boat ramps. Steelhead and brown trout have been caught near the mouth of the Black River. There were reports of some smelt taken near Algonac and Port Huron.

Local rainfall will no doubt push water levels up by the end of the week. Ice flows are still coming down the river at this time so boat anglers will need to use caution. A few walleye have been caught in the lower river and some nice 10 to 15 inch perch have been caught in the canals and marinas.

Steelhead are being caught at both Rockwood and Flat Rock when using spawn, crankbaits, spinners and even hair jigs.

The water level has remained at a fishable level averaging around 7,000cfs. Steelhead fishing has been slow but improved weather conditions will likely spark activity. Look from the Utica St. bridge toward the powerhouse using egg sacs, nightcrawlers, wax worms and minnows. Ice fishing anglers are taking perch from Wright's Landing and Lake Neahtahwanta has a very active crappie bite going on. Spikes and minnows are working for these species.

With the mild weather the angling pressure on the river has increased, but flow conditions are making fishing challenging. Overall the most productive techniques have been bottom bouncing with flies or egg sacs and float fishing with egg sacs or pink worms. Suggested patterns: Pheasant tails, Rusher nymphs, Hare's ear, Soft hackle nymphs and black or olive stoneflies.

Steelhead fishing remains good in the lower river using wax worms and spawn bags. Walleye fishing should be good off the pier along the rocks.

Steelhead are being taken at the mouth of the river on jigs tipped with wax worms and small bags with 5-6 eggs. At the papermill and near the golf course try fishing with jigs and wax worms. Steelhead have been caught near the Childsdale Dam.

Currently the river is high. Anglers are fishing for steelhead on the west side of the river using wobble glows with 3 to 6 foot leaders. The hot colors are peach and glow-in-the-dark with pink stripes. They are also floating choaker bags the size of a 50 cent piece below bobbers. Walleye are being taken on glow-in-the-dark paddletails, and 3/8 to ½ ounce jigs tipped with minnows.
