  1. i know it is not a replacement for AIS but there is an app for Iphones and Droids called Ship Finder. It shows location, travel info and ship description for ships all over the world. Again, not a replacement for AIS but a handy little "tool."

  2. People with only there hand out wont go that far if you are on a pro staff only. Its not like we get everything free with outdoing anything, we work multiply show, instore displays, seminars, doing hot boards in tackle stores, posting online ect. on our own dime, for alot of weekends when we are not fishing Some of the company's that we work is more then a business relationship, its a family atmosphere. You have to believe in a product and already run the product before hand, that show your loyal beforehand.

Very well said. I was trying to stay out of this conversation but agree whole heartedly with everything Matt stated. Most of us have so much more involved then just putting a sticker on our boat. There is also definitely a difference between what many refer to as "tackle whores" and true pro-staff. "tackle whores" embarrass everyone and really give anyone who considers themselves professional a bad name. I think most people know who is who in their own ports. I also believe there may be a confusion to some between pro-staff and being "sponsored" and paid.

As far as fishing reports and internet postings - you have to take it for what its worth based on who its coming from and your own personal feelings. Hopefully anyone truly representing a company actually believes in and uses their product. This in turn, of course, going to show directly in a persons postings. I understand that too much product dropping can be a turn off, it is for me too, but honesty also goes a long way. I am a firm believer in paying attention to details and catching fish. There may be a huge difference between a blue dolphin spoon and a specific size and brand of a blue dolphin. There is a fine line to balance. Sometimes vague fishing reports come off as bragging reports to me and not really helping anyone out.

  3. 8am-1pm charter, 14 for 20 mixed bag of lake trout, browns and kings. '

It was a very "sporty" trip to say the least, 35 degrees outside with 20+ mph north winds. Started on the last hill and nothing showing or biting. After a couple passes with nothing and the crew seeming up to the challenge, headed east. First bite in 120 fow and ended up working out to 200 fow and back to the hill. Did not mark a lot of fish but did see a TON of bait schools in the bottom 30 feet all the way out and back. Downriggers down 100-190, wire divers out 200ish and Blood Run 45lb coppers in 300 did all the work. Best setups were Dreamweaver 8in paddle in Chrome frog/aqua Action fly, Spin Doctor in White w/ UV Slick/aqua Action fly, Big Weenie Custom Blue Weenie and Catch-A-Bunch Mirage.

Working the bottom all the way out and back in the bait schools with a downrigger/Chrome Frog set up was the number one producer.

  4. Thanks Ron thats what I was looking for...I use the spro swivel with shrink wrap for my leader to copper....just wanted something for copper to copper without dealing with the shrinkwrap ...how strong is the twist? I've tried something like this but seemed to pull apart with a good pull?

That's what I thought you were looking for. By the end of the season almost every one if my coppers either has a small section cut our or longer section replaced using this technique. As long as you twist them in opposite directions it is almost as strong as original. I have never had a splice come apart on me.

  5. Mother Nature has kept us off the lake most of September but the small window of good weather today proved the fish are still there!

Left the dock just before 6am, 15 for 20+, fished straight out of town 80-130 fow. Most fish came just on the outside edge of the last hill. Did not mark a ton of fish but did see a lot of bait schools. Hottest setups were Dreamweaver 8'' paddles and Spin Doctors in Green Chrome Frog, white w/mountain dew and White w/UV slick pulling Action flies in aqua sparkle and green crinkle, Big Weenie flies in mirage and custom Blue Weenie. Started with over cast skies just 3 riggers and Blood Run wire divers fishing 50 to the bottom. Once the clouds disappeared riggers tight to the bottom and added Blood Run coppers in 250 and 300 foot segments.

The fish out deep are nice, clean, silver, red meat salmon. These fish are definitely next years fish and averaging 8-10 pounds. Hopefully this is a good sign for 2013!

  6. Majority of my charters are 5 hours dock-to-dock, tourneys longer. The few chances I get to go out for fun, usually shorter due to time constraints and just wanting to catch a fish or two and come home.

I work my behind off on charters and quite frankly, when I go out for fun I could careless if I ever catch a fish. It's all about relaxing for me

  7. I see all the time on forums about how bad the coated cable is. I have never had an issue with it. Even when i just switched to the non-coated signal cable, I found my coated cable to be frayed beyond belief! never noticed a difference in my signal quality. I am not saying the X4 is not a great unit, I am absolutely sure it is. I just think the whole coated cable argument is blown out of proportion....from my personal experience.

  8. The subtroll does use a coated cable. It is very similar to a depth raider but with a different display and probe.

The depth raider speed is very consistent. It is designed to maintain an accurate speed reading dispite waves, wind etc. they use a very precise and dependable algorithm to come up with the speed that is shown in the display. Even when changing speeds, there is a slight delay in change on the display until the unit is certain of a new speed.

  9. I got my cable directly from Depth Raider but I believe it is actually made by Torpedo. It regular seven strand stainless downrigger cable but has a single piece of copper wire running inside of the stainless. The initial connection is a bit more tricky than with coated cable. I have not noticed any difference in performance but have wrapped two downriggers together and came out unscathed!

  10. Depth raider has worked flawlessly for me for five years now. Never any issues at all. I recently switched to the new non coated cable. Never had issues with the coated cable just to try out. The only advantage I see in the new is not having to worry if a fish gets onto your cable or you wrap two riggers together.

  11. When i call people i want to know TWO things, how much water and how far down there coming. Its a new quiz for me everyday to figure it out. Being on the water everyday helps. If something is smoking hot for someone then ill change it up, being on active fish and right dept is more important then light green vs dark green to me.

Couldnt have said it better my self! My go tos are spin doctor/flys, mainly white with UV and white blue bubble. I feel if I'm on a rice fish, I'm going to get them going eventually with my spread by adjusting boat angle, speed etc. usually guys go to presentations come from personal confidence. I have a hard te taking off something I know catches fish for me just because someone else said they caught some fish on something else
