  1. Jimbobber,

I fish these just the way you see them on the line. Sometimes I troll with a fly rod that can not handle a flasher. I have put flashers on the down rigger weight and run the fly close behind them. It is not out of the question to use the disc in combination with a flasher, I have not done so.

In the Baltic Sea, Norwegian anglers fishing rotary head herring have added an Action Disc up the line and it worked well trolling for Atlantic salmon.

  2. Dan,

I do not. Some anglers will put a flasher on the downrigger ball. For me fishing lighter tackle is one of the benefits. I like to troll with a fly rod. I do troll conventional tackle too. I will be posting blog entries on western trolling techniques in the coming weeks.

  3. Thank you to the staff at GLF for the warm welcome.

A bit about myself. I have been a fly distributor for 25 years selling flies to fly shops on the west coast. Fourteen years ago the Wigglefin Action Disc came on the scene. It enabled streamer flies to be animated when trolled. Since then, one of my passions has been to design and produce fly patterns suitable for trolling trout in Northern California. The result was the Arctic Fox line of trolling flies and tube flies. These are tied with arctic fox fur. The #2 Trolling Flies are tied in a number of western bait fish patterns.

A few years ago I expanded my line to include saltwater salmon trolling flies for the Pacific Coast. My flies are fished from Alaska down through California. In 2016 I will be offering "Bucktailing Flies" for salt water. These are also the style used at Kootenay Lake B.C. Canada and at Lake Pond Orielle Idaho for kamloop rainbows.

My flies have been successfully fished throughout the inter mountain west for trout. I have had anglers successfully use them in northern Quebec for lake trout. I also have customers who fish them in New Zealand, where trolling flies with a fly rod is known as "harling".

My goal is to introduce my patterns to the Great Lakes angling community where I hope they earn a spot in your tackle along side some of the great patterns you already fish.

Attached are some GIF files of my Arctic Fox Flies trolled behind an Action Disc.
