lighter speed change

i have a mercruiser with a chevy 305.many times i would like to bump up the speed just a fuzz.but there is a spot in the lever where it goes from not enough to too much and i am constantly trying to just etch it in to place and there is this like jump between speeds. is there a fix?

A fishing friend of mine has a Alpha one 4.3L that he has rigged a gear reduction 12 volt motor to his Idle speed screw. Actually he had to remove the idle screw and replace it with a longer one he drilled so he could pin it to the motor shaft. I think he uses a DPDT momentarily on switch on the dash to control it. It sure makes it nice to be able to tweak the speed a couple of tenths of a MPH. He was trying to talk me into doing the same with my engine, but mine isn't as touchy as his was. I know what you mean about most boat controls. With mine I can bump the lever with the heel of my hand and then wait a few seconds to see if it responds. On most controls, I have found that it's easier to bump just a tad faster and tweak it on down to fine tune the speed. Make sure everything is lubed and adjusted properly. The set up he has is nice, especially when you have a rookie driver.

Check where your cable connects to the throttle and the carburetor. The outer casing may be slipping where it is fastened.

One thing you can do if you are trolling to fast is to use bags. Bags will help maintain a consistant trolling speed. Especially in rougher water.
