Dipsey Long Leads?

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

18-24ish feet. Handlining is the downside. There are days when I run long leads off the ball. Slide Diver makes a diver to make long leads easier. All because there are days when the fish want longer leads. Why wouldn't long leads be an advantage?

1H14X Thanks, When we have 3 in the boat guy steering boat keeping fish in center knows he has to hand line the long leaded dipseys line into the net. Its especially fun when you have flashers and meat rigs which add another 4' or 5' of length.

Plannng on hitting St Joe or So Haven next week.

Three people can be tricky. With guys who know their job, it's doable though. Driver keeps driving. Guy hand lining only worries about hand lining. Now comes the tricky part. Who nets? The guy fighting the fish. He has to drop the rod (or hand it off to the driver) and grab the net. Much easier with a fourth person but it's still manageable.

Good luck!

interesting question & comments - thinking behind the longer leads and slide divers is to add more stealth, but what about the opposite, short leads behind the dipsey w/ spin doctors/flys seems to produce too, anyone had luck more so one way or the other?  we've hand lined quite a few - always exciting

Jmohuts: yep, LMAO.
landed some kings by myself a long time ago, but not with long leads!?

I'm Probably just too dumb to know better, but was experimenting couple yrs ago, before I had AP or anything. Put out long Dipsey and of course was the one that kept going. Driving, fighting fish, hand line and net man all at once in 3-4's. Want a challenge?? I have been using Lite Bite Slide Divers, with good success, and usually don't run leads much longer than rod with my wire divers.

Fishing solo I'll use an 8' on my braided diver w/ a spoon but if I've got an extra body or two I'll run 12'-14''.

On my wire super-sliders I run 50' of 50# braid with a 2' leader ahead of a paddle or an 8' for spoons.  And to avoid a "which is better, Ford or Chevy?" type of replies, I'll just say I use 100% fluorocarbon for my leaders, It's worked so far.
