best reels for wire rods

Recommended Posts

if you only use them twice a year a Okuma Convector will be just fine. If you want a little better reel then an Okuma Cold Water. The Shimano Tekotas are very popular and a great reel but you are looking at $60-100 for the Okumas vs over $200 for the Tekotas. I run Cold Waters on my charter boat. They are very smooth and stand up very well to day in and day out use.

I agree with the above anglers, Okuma Fishing makes great gear for a good price. I use Coldwaters on my charter vessel and love them. I started with Convectors, which provided 10 years of flawless service. Either one will not fail you. Remember to put 10 or more feet of mono on the reels before you spool on the wire to prevent slipping.

Do any of you guys put 10-15' of mono in between the end of the wire and the swivel that attaches to the dipsy so you can break you rods down without worrying about the wire kinking? I don't really have the option to not break them down after each trip.
