Best Type Flasher for Coppers

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys I am new to this forum, but have been fishing salmon for over 30 yrs, mostly Manistee. Everyone has thier go to flashers for riggers, divers and cores or coppers. What seems to be best on the coppers and cores for most of you guys? I seem to prefer larger spin doctors lately on everything. They creat lots of twist though on the copper leaders. I see lots of video of pro chips and small paddles on copper out there. Are they better, less spin? Do you lean towards meat or flys also? Lets here what you prefer and Why?

I run spin doctors almost exclusively on my coppers and never have a problem with line twist, make sure your using good quality swivels or you will get line twist with any rotator.

From July through the run I use a lot of plugs (mainly Ace High) off copper but also run flashers & flies.

8" Spom Doctors and Bechold FishCatchers in Double Crush Glow with a BW Poofster glow or Homosezwhat fly

8" Spom Doctor in Blue or Green Dot glow with flies in blue or green respectively.

UV colors have been good the last two years too

Earlier in the year it is mainly spoons off copper for me.

My biggest fish last year, almost 27lbs came on a 300 copper with 11" paddle and one of my custom made flies. It was hot in august last year. Not much going on it yet, just one 10lb king, but I believe it will pick up as the bigger kings show up.

I run spindoctors and bechold picked up some prochips to give a try this year. I run the bigger ones deeper (below 60ft) colors best last year where white paddle green tape, chart tape and double crush glow white, the glow frog as well as the disco/plaid worked real well in august last yr mid day, flies vary ussually a green blue mix, or white crinkle with glow beads and frog type flies where hot last july and aug as well! I run flies pretty much always 22 to 24 inches behind. I run spoons off them as well from time to time with good success with a 36 inch to 42" leader seems to work!

I also rely mostly on aces Highs and spoons. Do get some line twist with the Spin doctors and havent really tried large or small paddles. I know a flasher and fly or meat program on everything is run allot by many good captains. I am going to try and develope a better program with paddles or echips and see if it makes a difference over the spinnys. I nodiced allot on videos from tournaments and from comments in seminars. I also need a bigger boat and money tree to keep up with all the Equipment:grin::thumb:
