The last two years i was soaking my herring strips in herring oil before i put them in the water. I didnt really see a difference. I was also soaking my felt imitation herring strips in herring oil. Problem with that is you need to bring the felt strips up and re-apply the oil. I have found that the felt imitation strips do not work as good as the real meat. As far as whether or not oil makes a big difference, im not totally convinced. I am going to continue using the oil until its gone, than see how well regular herring works without the oil.
