Leader or no leader?

Have a newbie question. I have been connecting my lures directly to a quick connect. Is there any need to directly tie the lure to the line? Any input would be great. Thanks!

Swivels are a must for anything that rotates, like a spoon or flasher. If you direct tie it will cause way to much line twisting and weaken or break your line. High quality ball bearing swivels are the way to go.

I've never connected a lure directly to the line on the big lake.

Don has a good point, you could get away with it on J plugs withouth too much worry.

I think we just don't do it because it is easier to just use swivels to change lures.

There is a reason for tying on J-Plugs. If a fish or snag breaks the line the plug portion will float to the surface. Any type of heavy snap-swivel will not allow the plug to separate from the hook rig. You may even be the beneficiary of someones lost plug.

If you're fishing stickbaits for browns in the spring, they run much better tied direct with a Rapala knot instead of using a swivel.

Tie directly to plugs or body baits ...then put a swivel a couple feet in front of it. Swivels directly to body baits or plugs dont let the bait run true!
