Temp Speed Probe

Recommended Posts

I think for me it was the best single investment I ever made in my boat however I have not ran mine in 2 years. I suppose I should set it back up but my program is pretty much set I either find fish or I don't. I have not been skunked in going on 3 years I have had some slow days but to be honest the probe would not have changed my day much. For me it really helped me dial in on my programs but after dropping a couple of them on the bottom all I see now is 300 bucks leaving my wallet LOL.

Steve, I was finally able to purchase an X-4 in my third year of salmon fishing and as stated above, it was THE single most productive investment for dialing in a program and catching fish...besides the boat of course. You will not be sorry, period! [and just between you and I, it's kinda like cheatin'!]

We've had our probe for a few years, and we rarely use it anymore. Sure it's nice to know where the temp is at, but the fish don't really care on most days. They go where the food is at. It is nice to know the speed at the ball, but after you do it for a while, you'll be able to tell your speed based on the divers and/or rigger cables. It is a nice thing to have as a newbie, but it is definitely not needed IMO.

see i was pretty much gonna purchase mine for the speed at the ball but im pretty confident in watching my riggers and divers after the years but i've always wanted to know how far off i really was

I'm still old school and go without (and we get plenty of fish). I do have a Fish Hawk Td though.

Taking after you now Ken..We have them, rarely look at them. Other things are far more important. When your buddy going 2mph slower than you fishing 15 degree different water than you are and he is deckloading them as fast as you are tells you that's not where the story is.

It sure does help to eliminate unproductive water quickly. By experience gained over time, you can determine best speed by downrigger cable angle and set a rod program to dissect the water column vertically with your spread and then wait and see which rods start firing consistently to dial in where the fish are. But, if you are fishing unknown water, or have not been out in a while, my probe, combined with my fish-finder gives me a quicker read on whether I need to play with lures and speed where I am, or move to potentially more productive water.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been using a sub troll for several years and find it very usefull. I often have guests drive while I rig and it is invaluable for an inexperienced driver. It is relatively easy for them to watch the down speed and it is much more stable than gps speed. I think it helps with the fishing program too.

The admiral was skeptical when I told her I ordered one. We averaged more fish per trip this year than any other year. Now, if I don't get the probe in first, I get yelled at: "I can't get the speed dialed in if you don't have the probe down yet!"
