Big king caught south of Manistee

Brian Mulherin - Daily News Staff Writer

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Derek Schulte, Rick Schulte and Tim Shreves pose with a 37-pound, 1-ounce king salmon caught 3 miles south of Manistee in 110 feet of water Monday night.

Shreves fought the monster for 45 minutes on a superline Dipsy Diver rod pulling a chrome, blue and green Spin Doctor called “showtime” and a UV ice meat rig.

The diver was set 150 back, said Rick, who has been fishing salmon for 36 years. This is his biggest fish. The group chartered with Paul Schlafley’s Riverside Charters out of Manistee Sunday night and Schlafley showed them how to fish with meat rigs.

It was the first Michigan Master Angler king salmon caught out of Manistee since 2009 and the biggest since 2000.
