Wire and backer

Recommended Posts

I know this discussion has been on the site before but I can't find it. If I used 100 yards of 30# wire, how much 30# mono do I need as a backer (I'm thinking 100 yards) and what is the best knot to use to splice the mono to the wire? The other option is to buy a larger spool of wire and put all wire on the reel. What do you think?

100yds is not enough in my opinion, you're asking for issues if you get a hog on.

Albright knot... I just respooled my wires with 1000' of 19 strand torpedo. I had two reels so I put the wire on one, then filled it with 30lb mono. Took note of how much backing it needed. Then pulled it all on the other reel. Then when I set the last reel up I knew exactly how much 30lb backer to put on.

This was on Okuma Convector 45D's.

I spool my Daiwa SG47LC's with 30# 7 strand wire. It fills the spool completely. I put some tape on the reel arbor then some braid and do an albright to the wire and then spool up. The braid is just a few feet, then its all wire.

I agree why short yourself on wire I spool 1000' of 30# wire, it fills the reel and that keeps the counter as accurate as is possible, My reels are made with pin on the arbor so I do a 1/2 hitch with a knot on the tag end and pull it tight. This comes in handy when the sea fleas are out like they are now, just bring it in cut off the dipsey slide the fleas off the end and retie, you have plenty of wire to be able to do this and not take it down to the arbor. A double half hitch works just fine never had a slip or broken knot and have caught a lot of large Kings on that knot. So in answer to your question, 100 yards isn't enough and I guess if u must tie on backer an albright knot works well.
