Penn 209 with leadcore

I have a older penn 209 reel, can I use this with lead core? how much would I be able to get on? The reel has no line counter so I hope I can use with lead core for a repeatable presentation

Rick, I think 1/2 core would be it with braid backer, mono leader, I use the 330 penn for full core w braid backer, w/9' firewolf rod nice set-up, good luck.

I have 2 lead core rigs that I have set up with PENN 209's. Bot are set up with 150 yds of 50# Power Pro backing. One I have 6 colors of lead, the other is set up with 4 colors. The 6-color just BARELY fits.

I have a couple 209's and I picked up one of those pre made 5 color spools with the backer, lead and leader (I was too lazy to learn to tie the knots ) and it fit just fine. I did have to "massage" the level wind slightly so the knots would fit through it.

Yeah, 5 color is about it. Just to warn you, the retrieve ratio on the 209's is real low. It takes a lot of cranking to get a fish in off them.

I am going to be using it for walleye, and just want to try a leadcore presentation and have the 209 laying around. Maybe that will have to be the guest pole so they get to do some reeling:D LOL

I use a 209 with a 5 color, one of those redi cores, all pre tied from fleet farm and it fit just fine. Caught alot of fish on it too. Yes, it is alot of cranking becuase the retrieve rate is fairly low. Love that loud clicker though, especially in low light, its the only penn i run, and you know right away waht pole it is.

Paulywood is absolutely correct, however it will still work. Do yourself a favor and learn this willis knot. It is not overly complicated, and it has never failed on me. This will allow you to tie up any sort of core that you want ie... 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5 - 10. They all have a place in my line up. And yes Magnumdeke use it for walleye. I have been doing it for 3 or 4 years now with success, even though this year was rather brutal on the bay for me personally.
