Engine Hours

Recommended Posts

I have been told by a good marine repair shop that you can typically get 3000-4000 hours on a motor in an I/O or Inboard boat. I didn't ask about outboards. Of course, it depends a lot on the preventative maintenance measures taken, RPMs the boat is run at; e.g., trolling vs running. etc. If you consider a car or truck averaging say 50 mi/hr, 3000-4000 hrs is equivalent to 150,000 - 200,000 miles - sounds about right.

Good estimate!

My truck has an hour meter on it. 1174 hours and 48,000 miles.

So's at 3500 hours, should be right about 150,000 miles!!!

The above #s sound reasonable. Marine equipment is built a little tougher than the average auto. If you can back off about 600 - 1000 RPMs after getting on plane, and not run wide out all the time, it can make a significant difference in engine life. Auto engines never see 4000-5000 RPM for extended periods.
