  1. I think we can all do what we want as individuals but it's not going to make any impact at all. The same thing played out on Huron a few years back.

From what I gathered our area is probably the extreme Northern area where Alewives will even survive. I think a couple of back to back extremely cold Winters played into this sensitive equation.

The Great Lakes have changed tremendously with evasive species like the zebra's etc. The zebras cleared the water to the point where it hurt not only the alewives but all bait fish and even the treasured lake perch. We're dealing with a whole new ecosystem and it will be what it will be.

Herring, a native species to the GLs was reintroduced in some areas with mixed results. The herring fry eat the same things that the rest of the bait fish do. The problem is very complicated and there are no easy fixes.

Bottom Line: As sportsman we can concentrate on the fish that remain and be good stewards of all our natural resources.

  2. I recently found out that the USCG uses a Chartploter Toughbook like this on at least one Icebreaker on the Great Lakes. That speaks loud and clear to me. I am selling the Toughbooks, DC charger, AC charger, and GPS only, and I'll install the charts and Chartplotter software free at your request. I have just sold out of these but have a few more on the way and they can be made ready with a little notice. Looking at a 13" screen sure make a difference for me. These do have AIS capabilities. Thanks :)

PS: If you are a Navionics fan Software and charts are available also. This option will add $$$$ to the cost. At any rate it will still be way less than a big screen HB, Lowrance, or Garmin. Personally I like the free charts listed above but different strokes for different folks. Just wanted to let you know the option is there.

  3. I just sold another one today that is going to Oscoda. I'll be delivering another one to the Saginaw area Mid week. I still have a couple and will get more as needed. These have so many features. Try one and you will like it. It's not a bad idea to get one now and familiarize yourself with it.

  4. These are military spec Panasonic Toughbooks with GPS and Great Lakes Charts. Some folks here have fished with me and saw the value of this 13+" chartplotter. These have been upgraded to a activated version of Windows 10 Pro. These have the optional back light rubber keyboards and touch screen. They also come complete with an AC charger, DC charger, and usb GPS. These are in VG condition. When the chartplotter program is zoomed in the depth numbers are visible from several feet away. I sold a quite a few of these to folks that fished with me and saw them in action. There is nothing like it for even close to the $400 price. These also have MS Office 2007 and were upgraded to 500GB HDD.

These can also be used for long haul truckers with different software and off course they are usable on and off the trucks or boats as a regular laptop. Yes they can connect to WIFI.

  5. When will the website be up and running? Every time I go to a store they never have what I am looking for. It is nice to order online and also have the capability to view all of the products available. This time I am buying in advance over the winter instead of last minute at a store. They seem to sell out. Thanks

No matter what you may need for boating or fishing it's always best to deal with it in the off season. During prime time the supplies dwindle.

  6. Here i am! Had the D/R starter rebuilt AND purchased a new starter.... the boat cranks over great......... but still won't fire........... a touch of ether in the carb, and still nothing..........never had this issue before, could it be the distributer cap? I appreciate all the help guys...........gotta get my dad out on the water before the end of the summer....

Spark, Fuel, Compression. From what you tried it's probably something to do with ignition. Wires, Coil, Spark, Plugs, points, rotor, cap, etc. Did you check for spark?

  7. I had no luck with DB electrical starters. The first one I got from them for my 140hp Mercruiser blew the gears out within 2 weeks, they sent a replacement and within 4 months the new one went out too. They were both Chinese made and not worth the time and effort to try a third one. I went back to the original OEM starter and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks for the input. I never tried a starter from there and it's good to hear from someone who has. I did buy a new Delco alternator from them a few years back. The original alternator on my 140 Mercruiser was a Mando and it was Korean made. I could have had it rebuilt for $150 (parts expensive) or buy the new compatible Delco for around $70.

  8. Sat I had the pleasure of fishing with Joe S, Doug, and Tyler. Tyler is about 13 yo and got to reel in all the fish we hooked up. We started out front of Au Gres and marked a lot of fish high and low. The bite was sloooooooooow and light. We picked up some undersized fish and a couple of keepers. We decided to make a move and picked up two quick fish and we thought we were off to the races. The bite again slowed and we ended the day with 7 walleye. we fished 27-34 FOW. BB and meat high and low. 1.4-1.7 MPH. It was bumpy with waves up to 3'. It was a good time with good friends.

Sun, I fished with Ben S, Gary W, and Joe S. I was close to calling off the trip and maybe I should have but the 5AM #1 Buoy report looked better than the 4 AM and I was hoping for a lay down. We started in 2' waves that quickly built to 3 and 4 footers. We went uphill for a while and decided to take a little break and go with the flow. Shortly after the turnaround the wave built to solid 4s with an occasional 6' wave. It was tough driving no mater what direction with the wind as much of a factor as the waves. We managed to catch 4 walleye before calling it a day and had a few nice ones come off close to the boat because of conditions. 27 FOW BB and meat high and low.

Sorry about the late report as I have been busy. Many of you know that I re-purpose Toughbooks into 13"+ Chartplotters. Many folks that have fished with me soon see the value of this set up. I liken it to watching the Super Bowl on a portable tv or a big screen. These set ups have chart numbers visible from several feet away. On other plotters, when zoomed, the depth numbers stay small. I have just finished another Toughbook and will deliver it tomorrow and I have another one for Joe S. that I'm waiting on a COA to legitimize the operating system. This work is not too difficult for for me but it is time consuming as I usually have to install new HDD, OS, drivers, and other soft and hardware. I have been running Windows 10 on the last few setups. These are military spec as tough as their name implies heavy duty laptops that can take rough wet use on and off the boat.
