    Keep it simple. I would run 2 manual downriggers. One dipsy diver off each side and a leadcore or copper off each side. I would have a 5 color lead and a 150 or 200 32lb. Copper. You can cover all the depths easily and have a good chance of catching fish.
    You dont need linecounter reels for lead/copper or downrigger. I would run braid divers with linecounters so you can be repeatable in your presentation.

    Launched at 3 and headed out past all the blow boats and set up in 200 trolled west to 275 and back into 110 before finding many fish.

    Had a double in 102 fow. 21 lb king on wire diver on 1.5 180 back chartreuse meat rig and 14 lb king on 5 color with mixed veggie.

    Trolled north south in 90-100 fow for another couple hours and had another double on rigger down 80 on chrome spinny and green meat rig and same wire diver as before out 166. Both were 17-18 lb kings.

    Headed for the pier heads and marked fish into 75 fow with no takers so we pulled lines and boogied at about 845.20180728_191634.jpg20180728_212043.jpg

    Set down in 70 fow and trolled out to 125 and back. Marked tons of fish but no takers. Headed back to 150 with nothing to show for it so moved north a couple miles and set up in 20 fow and trolled back towards launch. Went 3 for 3 in 25-30 fow at 8-815. 5 color mixed veggie. 2 color helmut and rigger down 16 green plastic spoon. 2 shakers and a 5 lb coho.

    Best budget rods?

    Diawa wilderness. I bought about a dozen when i first started and still have all of them. They are bulletproof. You can dind them for about 12 bucks i think. Heavy for dipsy's medium for core and mediun light for riggers.
    I have been slowly transitioning to shimano tdr and okuma copper rods. Those are also very affordable middle of the road rods. The diawas are being moved to the little tin boat and used as loaners.

    Wire dipsys

    I run 1000 ft wire on 30 series reels no backing. I dont get too hung up on having my line counters calibrated perfect. I just let my divers out a little at a time and use the counter to be repeatable after i catch a fish. Hope that kinda makes sense.

    Also if running only 2 divers i usually run on 1.5 and if running 4 ill go 1 and 3 on settings.

    Black slide divers lite bite with deep weights and rings and stock weights and rings. 25 for the pair

     

    Okuma magda 30 lh with 30 lb mono backing and 100 yards of i believe 50 lb braid. Only used a couple times. 80 for the pair

     

    Shimano tdr 1804 8' heavy rods. Used but still in working condition 20 for the pair

     

    Downrigger ball cradles. 10 for the pair.

    Had a chance to sneak out for a couple hours this afternoon. Fished from 3-6 pm. Set up in 290 fow just north and fished east to southeast. Found good marks in 275 -250 fish all 75-90 down

     

    Ended up 0 for 3 all on a chrome 10 Inch spin doctor and green meat rig. And one short rip on glow and white s.d. and purple fly. It was a little sporty out there solo.

     

    Also looked like some good strong marks in the channel. Saw a few people jigging. Tis the season.

    2 for 3. All meat. Tried spoons plugs and flies with no results.

     

    Launched at 2 and headed up towards rosy mounds and set up in 130 fow.

    Trolled n.e. into 90 fow before I had first hit around 4 on a chrome spin doctor and green meat rig down 65. Lost a small king near the boat.

     

    Trolled north in 90-100 fow and couldn't get anything to go so packed up and ran back South of p.s. about 2 miles and set up in 75 fow and bounced around from 75-90 on a north troll.

    Picked up a 5 lb. king around 7 on same meat rig as above down 70 and around 745 the 450 copper sang with a chrome spin doctor uv tape with black spots and white meat rig. Picked up a 8 lb king and called it a night at 8.

    Never bent a hook on a fish out there...and I run a lot of BW meat rigs...is this a drag issue? Dial that drag a little? 
     
    I think BW just went to different hooks btw...I bought one yesterday that had a bigger beefier hook on it...so the newer ones may have upgrades hooks now.

    Don't think it was too much drag. Played the fish from 220 feet out right up to 25 ish when it came off. Drag is set just enough to hold dipsy from leaking back. It made a big run when it saw the boat and the hook just bent out about 45 degrees. I think I'm gonna switch to a double octopus rig. They work great on my flies.

    Only got one look at the fish but I would bet it was over 25 lbs. I guess tomorrow I will be tying up a few new meat head leaders. I'm glad but also sad to hear it is not just me having problems with the big weenie hooks.

    I would rather pay an extra .50 to 1.00 for a rig with quality hooks than loose the biggest fish of the season so far. Grrrrr. Oh well. Beats mowing the yard.

    Set up in 175 n.w. of pier at 6:00. Trolled South East into 110 had something nice on wire diver down 70ish but bent hook on big weenie meat rig. Trolled into 90 with nothing to show for it and pulled lines at 8:30

     

    Lots of boats South in 110- 130 sounded like g.h. was the place to be on the radio. I'll be out again tomorrow with new hooks trying again.
